K321AQS

I’m new to this forum and I have enjoyed reading about questions like the one I have. I rebuild the K321 and now it wants to run really high rpm’s. It’s also doesn’t seem to run consistently under load. It used to run really well but started. running irregular so I did a rebuild and thought it was the governor. The governor looked good when we rebuilt it. So I reused it. But wondering is it is put in wrong or did I not have the cam in the correct position when reinstalled? I have tried replacing the carb but doesn’t seem to be it. The governor arm moves and all but the play is just too much and it wants to run away. I got the govenor adjust to close to the correct high rpm but it still runs under powered and seems to flooding as gas runs out the carb and runs poorly. Itll mow and run but not like it should.i tried timing it and couldnt see the timing mark in the flywheel with the timing light.  Could we have installed the shaft off enough to affect this?  I’m at a point I might tear it apart again replace governor and check for cam shaft alignment. Any ideas?

Dont tear it apart just yet.  Im thinking in the direction you did the static governor adjsumtnet wrong, and with the gas spitting out you may have a carb problem or the valves are set at wrong gap.

Will reply more depth after 9pm tonight.  Off to cut grass b4 the storms.

If gas is flooding out the front of the carb then the float bowl valve isn't sealing properly and the extra gas is a problem with it running.

Set the governor according to the manual. Then start the engine with trans in neutral. Move the carb / governor linkage by hand. You should feel it trying to push the carb closed. There's no guess work as it pushes pretty hard and noticable.

Here is the governor adjustment section of the Kohler Engine Manual.

Also FYI the gov gear is not timed to the cam or crank.  You also cannot install it backwards.  But I wanted to ask if you are certain you timed your camshaft correclt.

Funny you asked about timing the crank shaft. My son helped me rebuild that and he actually brought that up that maybe we are off on the crankshaft. So maybe it is. It also has a bit of a knock to it. But I don’t think it’s the main bearing?  I really didn’t think the governor gear was bad and it’s pretty difficult to re-assemble it wrong. So maybe it’s the crank is off?  Would that be a reason I can’t see the timing mark on the flywheel with a timing light? Give me pointers on timing the crankshaft correctly. Appreciate the help.

Did you keep the balance gears in the engine?  That would make a funny knock, until it’s not funny any longer…
