PTO clutch

Recommended Posts

N.C. horserider

Tuesday night I was finishing the lawn on my C165 8 speed when the blades stopped spinning. When I looked down at the PTO I could see a small amount of smoke coming from the end of the pulley. I ordered a new clutch plate from Toro and put it on. The bearings all looked good. Fired it up and still no spin and the clutch adjustment is down to the last few threads. I can hear the PTO engaging on the disc. Yes the belts are new and adjusted. I can't figure out why it won't pull the belt.

Is the snap ring still on the pto engagement shaft? My 414 the snap ring broke off and it was very similar.

There is a bearing in the end of the PTO pulley with a bearing and short shaft with two snap rings on it. It sound like the out side snap ring has come off the shaft. You should never have to use that much adjustment with a new disk. I have had that to happen, I have also had to replace that bearing in the PTO pulley.

Yes there is a large one on the outside and one on the outside and inside of bearing.

If the bearing is wore out it can cause the same trouble.

oldanred you hit it there is something rubbing by the middle spindle don't know if it's a pulley or a spindle bearing seizing it was impossible to hear with it running found the noise rotating blades by hand but I'll take the deck off tomorrow and see what's up.

Follow Up: After taking the deck off, removing belt guards, the idler pulley bearing is wore out causing it to wobble and rub on the adjustment bar.
