So what's the prevailing opinion on the low/no zinc class SN oil in these old(er) kolher engines ?

I don't use it. 

There are diesel oils that can be used. 

 

I was recommended to use Kinetix brand by two local small engine shops.

Been using conventional Shell Rotella in all 4 stroke outdoor stuff for years. Straight 30  wt in the summer, 10-30 in the winter.......

Consider Honda Pro GN4 10W-30.  It's a true SJ oil.  My local mechanic runs it in his dirt track race cars and swears by it.

 

Honda also sells a full synthetic oil, but for that price I'd buy Amsoil Zrod.

Fill it, use it, run it, change it, sleep well at night, and repeat.  Maintenance is more critical that anything.
