Problem refilling transmission

Hey all, I'm doing my first fluid change on my new-to-me D200.  Refilling the transmission is proving to be quite the struggle.  I've attempted to fill the tranny through the dipstick with a variety of funnels, but the oil just spills over the top.  I may have managed to get a quart in.

What am I missing?

If you place a wire alongside the funnel or put a drinking straw through the funnel it will act as a vent to allow the air to escape as the oil goes in.

That's the trick we use here. 

Long straw. Tape it to the funnel. 

 

Pour slow but sure.

Helps a little if the oil is at least room temp or a little warmer.

Just a note on the part of the straw below the funnel.

Personally, I use a bendy straw and have about 1” below the bottom of the funnel turned sideways so that it isn’t directly in the flow of the oil coming down the funnel. Experience taught me that if the bottom of the straw is within the oil stream and you fill the funnel, oil will come back up the straw!

Depending on where the oil filter is on that model you can back it off a turn or two and the air will escape there

Its on the right side forward of the axle.  I may try that as well

Thanks for the help.  I got the straw to work after playing with a few different funnel/straw combinations.

Sadly, the straw trick doesn’t work on these.

On the Eaton I leave the filter loose.  This lets the air escape and makes filling the transmission a breeze.  Just don't forget to tighten it up when you're done! Not sure if this same procedure will work on the Sunstrand.
