Odd Fuel Pump?

This was on a 953 @Achto has custody of. Right now set up as a daily plow mule. 

Had intermittent fuel problems from the day we got it running. He finally had enough and put a electric on it. 

I says gimme the old one I'd like to play with it... I can't wreck it.

The check valves & diaphragm in it seem to be OK. 

But in taking it apart I found this. 

Crap in it probably getting on the valves but might be some in the carb now. 

This tractor did sit outside for three or four years. Ran when parked tho... 

 

I've not seen valves like these before. All the ones I rebuilt had the plate with the tiny springs over the valve discs. 

This does have the primer lever.

Doesn't look familiar to me either Jim but I've only had mebbe half a dozen fuel pumps apart. 

All the ones I've seen had the little disc & spring. 

 

What keeps those flappies in place??

I'm pretty sure I have a pair of check-valves like that. They came from Then & Now.

I have one fuel pump with similar check valves. It is a high volume pump with a removeable tin top. The bottom section is the same as the regular pumps.

This picture shows an older (953 etc) fuel pump with the small springs and valve dicss on the left, a metal pump from a mid '70s Kohler with the mowe modern valves  in the center and a plastic pump on the right with the same valves.

Little rubber or plastic nubbies in the center. 

Looks like Richard's middle pump so thinking orginal was replaced by a later one. 

Better pics once I get it cleaned up. 

Been using these with good luck. Not quite as complete as then now but much less $$.

That's looks like one that's on my C160 and the 16 Auto

You check the oil in the 953 Dan? Looks like there is a small rip in the diaphragm.

Them check valves are the "latest, greatest" (or it was back in the mid-1990's when rebuilding the pumps was much more common)  that Kohler changed to in their fuel pump rebuild kits around the time of the Magnum engines being standard and beginning to switch over to Command Pro.  So, the pump has been rebuilt in the past (or a more modern valve body slapped on top of an older style pump) I have no idea when Kohler stopped issuing the fuel pump rebuild kits, but I would guess in the mid-2000's or so - By that time I had moved on to working at the local Ford dealer in automotive so I wasn't seeing much in the way of small engines until re-opening my shop in 2010. (and then retired from the business in 2020)
