Greg, I would just find a hydro instead of going through all of that

I have a nice GT 14 without a motor if you want a hydro :thumbs2:

I just did the opposite yesterday, converted a 312-A to an 8 speed. Took me about four hours. I had everything I needed already.

It would be easier to find a tractor with a bad motor and swap engines, because you will just about need a whole tractor to get all the parts.

I've done it, and it isn't hard at all. The center "console/column" area is stamped for either setup. NO mods needed.

But the catch is as has been said- Be sure to have all the parts. Maybe a donor tractor with a blown engine?
