davidtmercer 71 #1 Posted February 19, 2024 (edited) Was hoping to get clarification on the significance of a short block installed on a 520-H I am currently working on. The 520-H tractor is a 1994 model (73501, serial number 49......) The short block sticker is easy to read and instructs me to refer to the short block part number stamped on the cylinder block serial number pad when ordering replacement parts. I don't know where the cylinder block serial number pad is located. I would appreciate any and all information about this Onan short block engine. Would also like to know how I can clean up the original engine model and serial number sticker so I can read it or have it replaced. Reference attached picture of the Onan stickers. Thanks, Dave Edited February 19, 2024 by davidtmercer corrected the tractor model number

davidtmercer 71 #3 Posted February 19, 2024 Thanks I found it, 3528459, I assume since its a short block that this serial number is different than the one on the sticker that I can't read. Dave
lynnmor 7,812 #4 Posted February 20, 2024 The numbers are of little use when buying parts, all you need is the model number P220G. If you want a new sticker it can be ordered from Vinylguy. If you use the Onan Service Manual, page 1-1, the numbers can be figured out for your new sticker. 1

That engine was rebuilt and the professional that did it had the courtesy to put that short block sticker on there. In other words, it has a new block (a short block) and most of other the original parts such as everything else with maybe the exception on pistons and crank were used to complete the engine. A short block is the basic core of an engine. Since that new core number wont necessarily match the other numbers, they tagged it with that label to identify that it has been rebuilt. A backyard type of re-builder typically doesn't do that because they don't do enough of them to have stickers to identify it as such. But it's also possible the short block supplier could furnish those stickers with the blocks they refurbish. IDK. Not sure if you knew this or that's the kind of info you were asking about besides the numbers. Take a picture of it with your smart phone. Then expand the pic to to zoom in on it and it may real the details. You'd be surprised what you can see when zooming a pic.
davidtmercer 71 #7 Posted February 21, 2024 John, Thanks for the reply. That was the kind of detail I was interested in knowing. Will try your suggestion on using my smart phone to reveal the original model and serial numbers on the original sticker.
