New plug wires, old look.

Ive got 3 onans, 2 Kohler Ks, and ive never liked the selection of plug wires, ive been using V-Twin kits and shortening them down but most options i find are 'supressor' cored.

 

I found this company called Tons Performance, they sell old style copper cored, cotton wrapped, with a scuff cover, and a variety of colors, patterns, boots and connectors.  I got enough to do 5 tractors (8 wires) 12ft of wire,  for $53 with shipping, and a few extra boots and ends.  Cant wait to get it all made and installed.

I do the same thing except I use https://brillman.com/ for my supplies.

I have the red Tons Performance plug wire on my 1054. I got it for the retro look and the quality is great for the price.

Thanks for the tip Red.

They even have the old skool primary wire for that custom job. 

I'm kinda heavy on wiring supplies for now but next time.

Is that what you made me at the BS? The one that misfires? 

 

I've seen the cloth plug wire at show flea markets but they wanted 5 bucks a foot for it. Me thinks they were catering to the hit n miss crowd.

I didn't see where the cloth covered wires were high temp rated. I imagine they are but would like to be sure. They would also cost me a buck a foot more plus shipping

I dont think they are rated to exhaust manifold temps, id think they would burn through on direct contact with exhaust, that said, silicone jacketed wires are only rated to ~450⁰ contact protection.  Ive never had a small engine wire burn though.

Went fine on 3 so far, i really need to get a plug and crimper, the ratcheting crimper i have is good enough but not ideal.  I put dielectric grease in the boots and so far all 3 are starting easier,the 416 will usually kick back once but it didn't.

I did a crude heat test, took one of the old wires and a section of new wire, ran the onan at 3600 for 5 minutes then held them against the header, after 2 minutes both were pretty badly damaged, i don't think either would  have made it to 3 minutes without the core being compromised.

 

I held both wires about ¾ inch off the pipe for 10 minutes using a wire, the silicone jacketed wire was compromised in that the outer layer was cracking off, the cotton wrapped wire had discoloration of the lacquer coating and just started to bubble but no nothing that would cause immediate problems.  Long and short, don't let plug wires sit on the exhaust manifold and keep it an inch or so away.

 

 

My car has 1-⅞ stainless longtube headers, high dollar hear resistant wires and fiberglass boot sleeves, one wire got twisted towards a pipe and it burned through the fiberglass sleeve and wire...🫠

My onan P216 on my 416H has never started as easily as it does now, it used to have to kick back then choke off to start...now its effortless hot or cold
