312 8 front spindle question

Recommended Posts

Daron1965

My 312 is put away sleeping in the back of the shed. I can’t easily get to it. Can someone please tell me the diameter of the front spindle? Is it common 3/4 inch? I plan on ordering new rims for the front because of damage.

thank you.

Should be 3/4" - IF nobody replaced it with a later 1" HD setup. Easy to tell - one retaining clip or screw on the spindle - 3/4" HD would have a castle nut and the rim is held on with 4 lugnuts.

Thank you guys.  As usual, a wealth of knowledge.

Do you have 6" or 8" front wheels? Believe the 312's came with both.

6" allows room for the 37" 2-spindle mower deck.

Very good point if you are replacing wheels.     My 312 Hydro came with 6" wheels and the longer spindles.  I switched it to 8" wheels and left the longer spindles to get more clearance under the front axle for the snow plow frame.    I never had a 37" deck, but the 42" deck works fine.   The tractor frame is not level sitting higher in the front .
