Need some 522xi dipstick help

Bear with me here for minute, my brain is working overtime.......so I get this 522xi the other week, 228hrs on it.  It's a little dirty from sitting outside, but overall seems to be well kept.  The previous owner had mentioned something about recently changing the oil.  I didn't check it at the time of purchase, but did when I got home.  Per the dipstick, the oil was filled quite a bit higher than it should have been.  I decided not to run the motor until I investigated further.  Fast forward to today, I decided to drain out the excess oil.  In order to get it down to the top of the fill line I had to remove about 1.5 red solo cups full of oil which equalled about 20oz....or slightly over 1/2 a quart.  Then the thought crossed my mind that it may have the wrong dipstick in it, so I pulled it to cross reference the part number.  The part number on MY dipstick is 24-038-01 M.  Then I head off to partstree and Kohler to look up what its supposed to be.  According to every piece of documentation I can find on the motor, the dipstick is supposed to be part number 24-038-10-S.  I can't seem to find MY dipstick part number listed anywhere except as part of a "dipstick replacement kit" related to MTD/Cub Cadet products.  So needless to say, I'm not starting this thing again until I get to the bottom of what is going on, verify the proper dipstick, and do a full oil and filter change.

 

I was wondering if any 5xi owners would humor me and potentially help me out?  From my digging, it appears that the 518xi, 520xi and 522xi all have the same dipstick according to the parts fiche.  Maybe measure from the block to the top of the their empty dipstick tube?  Check the part number on your dipstick, and take some length measurements on it for me?  It would be immensely appreciated.

For reference, my tractor is a 98' 522xi model # 73560.  Motor is a CH22S, spec # 66545

You could always drain all of the oil and refill with the recommended amount per Kohler and see where it ends up on your current dip stick.

The CH22-66545 is a Toro spec engine and according to the IPL, as you stated above, the original dipstick is 24 038 10-S, $9.28. Also as mentioned above, I suggest draining the oil and fill with 2 quarts, including oil filter, run for a short time to fill oil filter and see where the oil level is on the current dipstick.

I have several 522xi machines and I will be up at the shop this afternoon. I can get that info for you. 

I know these machines hold 2 quarts with the filter change.

My thoughts were the same about draining/refilling and checking the level on my current dipstick, but that’s going to have to wait a few days due to the holidays. In the meantime, if this dipstick is the wrong length I’d like to get the proper one on order.

I found two different dip sticks, one with a plastic yellow top (part #24 038 10) and it is approx 13 inches long. The second one is a metal black top (part #24 038 01 M) and it is also about 13 inches long. The tube height on both engines was 5 13/16" high.

Yes it does……thank you very much for taking the time to check for me.  Mine is the metal black top version with the exact part number as yours. That makes me feel better.  Guess the PO just overfilled the engine. Sometimes the simplest solution is the correct one.  Merry Christmas!!
