Looking at a 417XT with a broken drive belt the question is what kind of trans does it have and can it be towed without blowing it up?

953 nut

An Eaton 1100 can be pushed or pulled slowly onto a trailer but not for a long distance.

Transmission is a Hydro-Gear

Operator manual will have pushing instructions

I have touched exactly ONE machine (a 10-year-old Toro 238 5-speed) with a HydroGear and it was doing just fine.

HydroGear is a huge company with a wide range of models and you’ll find them in a LOT of lawn and garden equipment from big-box equipment to commercial zero-turns.

My sense is that from brands like Toro and JD, the hydro strength/quality/performance will align with the strength/quality/performance of the rest of the machine.

Good info Don.  Thanks. Does this trans have a tow valve?

I don’t know. Guessing not, at least on the lower end models, since such things add cost and opportunities for misuse and warranty issues. I’ve never heard, for example, of a zero turn having tow valves.

The Eaton 1100, for one, uses internal acceleration valves to allow slow movement without power. (BTW, these are darned clever gadgets worth learning about!)

I may be wrong but I think all zero turns have tow valves.  There's a 5/8" nut on the pumps that you loosen when you need to tow.  My Exmark walk behind has two, one on each pump.  Pumps are made by Hydrogear.  Not sure if you can see the tow valves in this picture.  They have 1/4" bolts thru them.
