Jason X 19 #1 Posted October 1, 2023 212-5. Is it the gear or the gear sector that goes bad on the steering?
Pullstart 64,859 #2 Posted October 1, 2023 My best guess, is the one that got the least amount of grease… 1

In my opinion it would be the sector ( 13 ) that will give out because it is rather thin and made of steel. In my opinion it was a cheap design.

oliver2-44 10,405 #6 Posted October 1, 2023 It also could be #18 the bearing/bushing at the bottom of the steering shaft
ri702bill 9,058 #7 Posted October 1, 2023 Not familiar at all with the 200 series - but i had a similar problem on a 1994 Craftsman Steering Express rider - the one with the heavy handed 4 wheel steering. The welded on gear on the shaft stripped, the sector was fine. Was able to cut the weld and replace just the gear..........
squonk 42,780 #8 Posted October 1, 2023 I had a 210-H for 20 years. did everything with it. The only steering issue I has was one of the ball sockets on #20 wore out. cut it off, welded on a stub, threaded the stub and installed one of those riding mower ball joint thingys
JoeM 7,972 #9 Posted October 2, 2023 (edited) I've had a couple two three go through the shop and the issue was with the #12 gear on the end of the shaft. I had another shaft on one and replaced it. You could take a close look at yours and might be able to re-index the steering shaft so when it is centered, it is riding on the good portion of the the steering gear of the down shaft. That is if the part of the gear is not worn bad. On some cubs that gear comes off and is able to be flipped and reused. Kind of like they knew at some time those things wear. Jason X 19 #10 Posted October 5, 2023 Good idea. What holds the shaft in . I haven't flipped the horse up yet to look. It feels like round shaft collar.
Jason X 19 #11 Posted October 5, 2023 Finally got a good look and as a couple of you suggested the shaft gear is stripped but the top half isn't so maybe I can just flip it.
