Clearance Underneath C-111 Chassis

With a 48" deck on a C-111 there is little or no room to raise the deck above

the mowing position. Second problem, in order to cut grass to a moderate height

it is necessary to select the highest position using the rear wheels adjustment.

Even then cutting was too close and larger 4" rollers were fitted to the front.

So I'm wondering if other horizontal shaft WH machines have more vertical

clearance to accommodate this deck. And I don't understand why this deck under

any circumstances does not allow a greater range of cutting heights. I must be

doing something wrong.

What size tires you have on it? and What did the deck come off of?

Other than that under normal circumstances should work unless someone has mounted different spindles on it that too long maybe :thumbs2:

Hey Bo-

Tires are original 23x8.5x12. Deck is from unknown machine, but works

fine with minor adjustment to tach-o-matic. Now that I have the deck

adjusted so as not to cut too short, there is no room for any up/down.

Deck spindles appear to be the original cast aluminum jobs. Did these come

in various configurations? I've seen some on ebay and they are the same

as mine. I'm sure mine are the originals judging from the amount of sand

blasting.

Can you get any pictures of it and post? I would imagine the spindles are correct, but you never know what someone could of done before.

Wheel Horse decks were designed before longer grass became good practice. If you are getting a 3" cut you are doing well.

I modified my older deck to cut at 3" and the difference between up and down is very small - mostly a matter of lifting the front a bit higher.

On ground following decks using larger tires will not help - it will just make you readjust.

As I said, if you can get 3" you are doing well!

As matters stand now, the 48" deck is cutting just fine in the highest

position possible. I doubt its 3" but its close. What is great is that the

11 hp Honda is quite adequate for this deck under normal mowing

conditions. The only significant remaining problem comes when the

deck encounters uneven ground surfaces. Upward pressure on the deck

tries to raise it, but there is little travel and the result is reduced traction

of the machine. Occasionally it is necessary to put it in a low gear and

get off and push. Fortunately, our two acres are mostly level and this

rarely happens.

My converted Gilson 42" deck doesn't have this problem (an A-O-M

"H" frame was taken from a WH 36" deck and mounted on the Gilson 42").

you might have something wrong because i have a c-111 and it has the same height as my c-160,what size are your front tires?like bo dawg said take pictures and maybe somebody can spot whats wrong

Fronts are 16x6.50x8. The deck is on the garage floor, the tires are

inflated and the deck can be raised about an inch maybe. Wheels are

6" on rear of deck, 4" on front. There just isn't any room to raise the deck

further with the height adjustment at the rear of the deck in the fully

raised position.

I appreciate knowing that the clearance of a C-111 isn't less than that

of a C-160.
