tvr383 0 #1 Posted August 16, 2009 Am looking around the 18 auto kohler engine and just discovered that there is no oil filter to it!Where it should be there is a block off plate bolted on.Now this is a first for me a gaz small 4 cycle engine with a pressurized oil system without an oil filter! There is an oil filter onto the rear transmission housing but as far I know engine doesn't share its oil with his part? From the on-line kohler manual for this K482S motor there are two possible (maybe even three) type of filter depending its final use.But I don't see anything that looks alike on my tractor. any ideas? thanks. bitten 134 #2 Posted August 16, 2009 Im no expert, but I would think that it is supposed to have a filter on it. Maybe the p/o put the plat on it. I would drain the oil take the plat off and see if you can put a filter on it. By the way :thumbs2:
jaysmith801 0 #3 Posted August 16, 2009 it might have had a remote mounted oil filter
lotus1967 0 #4 Posted August 16, 2009 I have a 481-8 with the Kohler twin and also have no oil filter. It is my understanding (and I may be wrong) that there were Kohler Mag. 18's that came both with, and without an oil filter. If this is the case, we likely have the same series engine. My tractor is a 1986/87 vintage. I just change oil 2 times a season rather that once.
Jim_M 179 #5 Posted August 16, 2009 In 1973 the K482S came without an oil filter. If you can get the tin and filter adapter from a 1974 and up Kohler twin, it will bolt right on in place of the block off plate. If you can't get the tin you can just hole saw the hole in yours.
lotus1967 0 #6 Posted August 24, 2009 Correction: I mis-stated in previous post that my Wheel Horse was a 481-8. Correct that to 418-8. If there is no filter, do these engines still have a pressure oiling system that would support adding a filter as suggested in the previous post?
