12hp vs 14hp Crankshaft

Recommended Posts

daemon2525

I have an engine that has broke a rod a couple of times and I am putting it back together AGAIN.

I have been reading Brian Millers site over and over and it seems clear that

the 12hp crank has the counterweight flattened to remove weight so that the

lighter 12hp piston will balance.

However I notice that the crank that I am using is rounded like Brian would describe the 14hp crank. This is a 12hp k301.

Do you suppose that I have the wrong crankshaft or that there are some 12hp crankshaft that are not flattened?

I bought this engine used and assumed that it was the original crankshaft but there is no way for me to know that.

thanks.

TT

If the counterweights are round on the bottom it is indeed a 321/341 crankshaft.

What size is the bore? I actually had a 301 block bored from 3.375" to 3.500" and used a standard 321 piston, so it's not like you couldn't "make" a 14 hp engine out of a 12 - but you still have to use the proper crankshaft or it will shake itself apart.
