jnelkie 11 #1 Posted August 11, 2009 Can any one tell me if adding a 3 point hitch and rear pto on a D 160 is worth the money. I want to buy these add on's but I don't know what I can use them for, what attachments will the pto work on and if I dont have them am I still able to use attachments. One more thing is does any one know how to tell the year of a tractor my d 160 is a 16 horse with a onan engine.
Gerry w 2 #2 Posted August 11, 2009 IMPO I feel having the 3 point hitch makes the D a "compete" tractor, and the PTO is what you need to "run" any power driven attachments so is needed as well. But I'm a newbie to the D's, I'm sure someone with far greater expertise then I will answer you. Good luck!
pfrederi 18,638 #3 Posted August 11, 2009 The question is what do you want to do with the tractor. The 3 point is not cheap to buy. Then you have to buy the attachments, a tiller or finish mower will set you back more $$$. If all you want to do is mow grass a regular under mount deck is cheaper. How often would you use a tiller vs the cost of a 3pt and PTO and tiller??? If you were thinking of a moldboard plow or disk then you will most likely need Ag tires to have enough traction...another expense. I can't think of too many uses for a rear PTO if you do not have the 3pt. I got a finish mower for my D200 as I will be using it to mow between a a few acres of Christmas trees. I have been using a Case VAC tractor with a 6 ft mower but the trees are getting bigger (closer together). The mower wasn't cheap and I am having to spend even more to get it ready to mow. I think that a FEL would be more useful. It would cost more than a 3pt, PTO, Tiller/mower but would provide you a useful tool. If you go that route you should get the heavy duty front axle and spindles. And make sure your steering is in perfect condition. FELs are very hard on front ends....
