Hard to tell what the problem might be, need to go through the drawing and eliminate all the items that ground the magneto wire.

thanks,  are you talking about the white wire from the kill relay?     this looks a little overwhelming to me at the moment.  thanks again for your response

Yes, that wire should run along side of the right side of the engine. Near the starter wiring.

Since it starts with the key it could be any one thing in this string to the kill relay.

so yesterday i looked things over again and started trying to eliminate a few things in the wiring.  just for the heck of it i started the engine and backed the key off to the "run with lights on " position and it stayed running.  then 1 ahead to "run with lights off" and it stayed running. shut it down and it started once from " run with lights off" then it didnt the second time.    looks like maybe a connection in the ignition switch or replace it all together?    i did find relief that it does run now.  thank you for the advice. Jim

take a light and look into under the hood at the rear of the ignition sw. I have seen where they become corroded and may just need the plug taken off and cleaned up.

thanks Joe,  i will check that out tonite.   i am really liking this tractor since joining this group.   i bought it 7 years ago from a friend who bought it new.   up until last month the poor thing has never had the wheel chains and blower off of it, so even the last 2 years i have only used it 2-3 times.  126 hrs and it looks like brand new.  it deserves to have a deck on it for the summer if i can find a nice one reasonably priced.    cheers  Jim
