kpinnc 14,663 #2 Posted June 7, 2023 Looks like a 400 or 401. Worth? What makes you both equally happy or equally disappointed...
Pullstart 66,984 #3 Posted June 7, 2023 It sure does scream patina! With the exhaust up, I’d be afraid the engine got water in it if it has stayed outside any period of time. This might be just me, but I’d value it at $200 give or take. That’s assuming it’s a roller in need of lots of work to drive again. Missing belt guard, heat shield for exhaust, needs front tires at a minimum…
oliver2-44 10,739 #4 Posted June 7, 2023 It has the new 2 piece/3 speed transmission, which would suggest it is a 1961- 551 which would a HB55 Tecumseh engine. But the hood has the square hole for the choke and throttle controls which would suggest it is a 400 or 401 which should have a 4 hp Kohler engine. The solid seat pan would suggest an early model 400 It has some kind of interesting idler pulley setup using 2 idler pulleys. Interesting custom slot hitch mounted up front. Mower deck has a hole or 2 rusted in it. Is there a serial number engraved on the bottom of the plate between the choke and throttle levers? As other said missing the belt guard, heat shield, incorrect foot rest, needs at least one front tire. that's $250-$300 in used parts off ebay. I would ask to pull the transmission drain plug briefly to check if it has water in it. If you have a compression gauge check compression on engine. You can easily put another $250-$400 if these need more than seals. I'm with Pullstart $200. Theirs at least $200-$300 in used parts their all day long. It's just money, take it home and give it some love! We do our best to enable the horseaholic disease every chance we get.

Racinbob 11,975 #6 Posted June 8, 2023 Pretty much what Jim said. The hood is a 1960. The only mid engine that had the two piece transmission was a 551 but the frame is wrong. It's been pieced together but still worth the 2-300.
