Odii 10 #1 Posted May 23, 2023 Well dang, I'm sure grateful that this place exists. We just got ourselves 5 acres on the Eastern Shore Maryland, and a family member said "we have a riding mower that has been in our garage since we bought the house 14 years ago if you want it". Well, went and got it Sunday. actually hadn't been TOUCHED in 14+ years I didn't have a trailer yet - so we took off the hood and the deck, and 2 of us manually lifted into the back of my tahoe! she fit!!! went and cleaned out the fuel tank, changed the spark plugs, new batter, gave her some affirming language "c'mon baby you know you want to", and after about 5 minutes, she fired up!!!
ri702bill 9,499 #2 Posted May 23, 2023 Welcome!! You may wish to check the "New Horse to the Herd" document - LOTS of good info as to what to look for when you wake one of these up after a long nap - A lot depends on how it was (or wasn't) prepped before it way put away...... could be easy or an uphill struggle. Handy Don 14,096 #5 Posted May 23, 2023 The 270-H is an interesting unit since it has a small hydraulic pump and deck lift separate from the transaxle. Seconding a visit to the checklist. Oil, electrics, belts, general lubrication, etc. Sooooo tempting to say, “well, it's running, lets go mow” and “we’ll check it over later." As @ri702bill pointed out, a lot depends on how it got put away and stored. It'd be a shame for a great vintage unit to incur damage or excess wear that could have been avoided.
WHX?? 51,845 #6 Posted May 24, 2023 Verticals aren't really our thing but heck I got a couple and these here still disrespect me. Most likely have manuals and such if you need.

Much of it you will completely ignore but if you're anything like the rest of us, there is going to be a few things that will be a good reminder for you to check because it slipped your mind or whatever....
