stevebo-(Moderator) 8,557 #1 Posted July 31, 2009 I too am restoring a 58 RJ (Bought from Vin's RJ) and just have to share my experience... Everything is painted and the reassembly is just about done. I had the gas tank hanging to dry after painting and wouldn't you know it I accidently walked into it and it dropped on the concrete floor. I figured worse case I will have to do more bodywork then repaint it well after picking it up I found there were not dents or scratches on the tank however the threads wherre the gas cap screw on crushed Being aluminum there is no way to make it right so .... I guess I will have to drive around with 1/4 tank of fuel until I find another tank... This sucks !! The restore came out nice though. Anyone have an extra fuel tank for an RJ ?? linen beige 15 #2 Posted July 31, 2009 Aluminum? If so it's not an original tank. Although it would be tedious work with a small hammer and punch it can be reshaped if the metal isn't torn.
TJ 184 #3 Posted July 31, 2009 Don't feel pregnant, I did the same thing with the tank on my 654. It left a small dent that you would have to look for, except for me; I can't walk past it without noticing it. Tom

VinsRJ 723 #6 Posted July 31, 2009 Sorry to hear about what happened Steve. That tank shouldn't have been aluminum, if I remember correctly it had some rust in it. Those tanks were not made of the thickes metal in the world either. As for the tank on ebay, the guy is on "crack". The first go around on ebay the tank didn't even reach $50 in bids and didn't meet the reserve...... so whats he do...... puts it up the for the second go around for $100 buy-it-now. Wierd. stevebo-(Moderator) 8,557 #7 Posted July 31, 2009 Guys now that I think about it there is rust so it cannot be aluminum.... The metal is very soft !! Duke, I will get that info to you thanks for the offer. I was wondering if anyone every cut out the old filler neck and welded in a new filler neck?
VinsRJ 723 #8 Posted July 31, 2009 I was wondering if anyone every cut out the old filler neck and welded in a new filler neck? Steve if you want to go that route you can chop a 1 3/4" (I believe that's the demension) fill neck out of any old gas tank. If you have access to a tig welder that would give you the best results. stevebo-(Moderator) 8,557 #9 Posted July 31, 2009 Guys, Update... I found a donor fueld tank at a local mower shop and cut out the cap and flange and uncle bo and I soldered it in. After a gind down and filler it looks great. The paint is drying now. This time I put it where it won't fall. I also got the miller tire paint and the ags are drying as well. Looks good so far...
