whfan74 2,073 #2 Posted July 31, 2009 I have seen a few posts on here where guys are using 20 ton presses to help remove them. Most of the guys are sacrificing the shaft by cutting them in order to save the original steering wheel. I guess it all depends on the access to certain tools that you might or might not have. Good luck!

pfrederi 18,791 #5 Posted July 31, 2009 Steering Wheels and wheel hubs...my 2 favorite parts to remove. If you have the wheel and shaft out of the tractor try this. First clean the shaft just below the wheel until is is shinny. Clamp the shaft in your vice with the gear end of the shaft against the bottom of the vice. This will put the steering wheel up above your head (I get a step ladder out. Then use a deep well socket (impact is best) that will fit around the shaft but contact the steel ring of the wheel. Using your biggest hammer drive the wheel down the shaft onto the cleaned part. Then clean up the end of the shaft and the wheel will come off easily. I have done his on two recalcitrant wheels with good results and no damage to the wheel...now if I could just get the roll pin out of another one I have....
