Techumseh carb.

I have heard it said more than once, if you have a Tecky carb, and you shake it, and it doesn't rattle, you have an irreparable problem. Any truth to this? Thanks Greg

I've heard that phrased more along the lines of it needing to be deep cleaned.

I believe there are quite a few Tecumseh carbs that the main needle can't be removed because it's drilled after installation.

That too can be solved by purchasing a rebuild kit that has a needle with grooves of a certain type.

What engine is this on?

From my experience, yes. The emulsion tube has a steel check ball in it - you get water in the carb, and steel equals rust. The ball is what makes the rattle sound - if the ball is rusted in place at the bottom, no fuel can enter the tube and that means NO idle circuit.

BUT - if you only need the high speed circuit, like on a generator, you MAY be OK. Eric referred to "deep cleaning" - a few sessions in an Ultrasonic cleaner may do the trick...

Look at the section view on page 10 of the attached PDF - clearly shows the little bugger...

Determined effort can save them, yes.

Rust will make it hard, but so far I’ve only encountered varnish from evaporated gas and a long session in a borrowed ultrasonic tank and some sharp knocks got it loose.
