MikesRJ 558 #1 Posted July 28, 2009 Anyone have comments or opinions on the A-90. I think I found a good deal on one locally and wondered what you owners and critics have to say about it. Please give me the good, bad, and ugly; as I intend to REFRESH this machine as a "Work-Horse". Thanks.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,602 #2 Posted July 28, 2009 Mike, There were two A-90s made, a 1974 A-90 Special and then Wheel Horse made an A-90 for 1976 and 1977. The '74 A-90 Special had a Briggs 8 hp model number 109434 with a Peerless transmission model number 1400. The A-90 for '76 and '77 had a Briggs 8 hp model number 191707 and a Peerless transmission model number 648. I'm not that smart enough to tell you the differences in the engines, the transmission, nor the tractor itself. I can tell you they were lawn tractors, and therefore, not as desirable nor thought of as the garden tractors. The best thing they got going for them is - they're made by Wheel Horse. Here's a link to a picture of one: http://jacqueslacasse.tripod.com/WHGilbert/Wh_a90_01.jpg

The Wheel Horse Lady 5 #5 Posted March 2, 2013 Found you guys' thread while looking for information on the A-90 Special. It was mentioned about the differences between the different year model tractors. I believe the '74 A-90 was the small frame lawnmower style tractor. I have a 1976 A-90 special and it looks a whole lot like the B and C series tractors of that era, having a larger frame. I will tell you that the transmission is an odd duck. It's unlike any other that I've seen on a WH. It's sort of like a hybrid cross between the Peerless and Uni-drive's. It has the same "football" styling of the Peerless, but is made out of cast iron like the Uni-drive's. How rare do you think the 1976 A-90 Specials are? Thanks! TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #6 Posted March 2, 2013 The A-90 Special (model number 2-4300) is a 1974 with a horizontal shaft B&S engine and the cast iron 1400 series Peerless transaxle. The 1976 & 1977 A-90 lawn tractors used a vertical shaft B&S engine and the Peerless 600 series transaxle.
