Geoff Cornwall 75 #1 Posted April 22, 2023 Hello all , i have been working on various bits and pieces on my C 161 , and have come across several rusted nuts, bolts , and in particular captive bolts in the seat . Can anyone tell me what thread sizes the bolts are ? Over here we mainly use metric now , although BSF , Whitworth , and a couple others are still found on older and vintage machinery . I guess Wheel horses are ANF or ANC , ideally i would like to get a small tap and die set to cover the majority of fasteners as purchasing new suitable bolts here is almost impossible . If someone could point me towards a set i would be most grateful . Geoff .
953 nut 60,224 #2 Posted April 22, 2023 Most older seat bolts in the states are 5/16-18 but yours could be metric, seems like lots of things are coming from China and it is a matter of what they feel like selling us.
Geoff Cornwall 75 #3 Posted April 22, 2023 Hi 953 nut , i believe my 161 is an American made one but my 8 horse is from Belgium . The 161 seat has the Wheelhorse logo embossed in it so i think its original . I will try to google 5/16 18 taps . Thank you for the help .
ri702bill 9,503 #4 Posted April 22, 2023 Geoff - IF your C161 was American made and brought across the big pond, then yes, all theads and fasteners were originally either UNC (Unified National Coarse) or UNF (Unified National Fine). BUT, who knows after 50 or so years who had their way with repairs. The only metric threads we had here back then were the spark plug!!! A decent tap & die set will have a thread gauge to determine which thread you have...... Bill
Geoff Cornwall 75 #5 Posted April 23, 2023 Thanks Bill , just the info i was after . I will order a set , i have come across one or 2 metric fasteners already , but most seem to be original wheel horse . It does have south bend on the data plate !
