1054 Kohler Engine Surprise

Recommended Posts

I cleaned the engine tags on my 1054 today and was surprised to see it as a K301. I had posted that it had no coil and was questioning the wiring earlier this week. With the cover specs as pictured if this is a replacement engine would it have a coil or magneto originally? I am quite certain it is now a magneto fired engine. I am rewiring it at this time with my 9 year old grandson as my assistant and he is loving it. I hope after rewiring it starts, runs great and I can begin on routine maintenance and fixing some other issues.

The spec number shows that to be a replacement "Service Engine"

The serial numser shows it to be a 1978 engine.

If it is a magneto engine it should have the exterior magneto coil on it.

The type of ignition will deterine the correct key switch and some of the wiring.

Those same spec numbers also show this type as well. Is there points (Breaker) on that engine? Is there a plug wire? If so where does it go?

The engine has points/ condenser and the plug wire goes in behind the flywheel cover near the carb. It has the starter/ generator and also has the original split key ignition with the starter button intact. It has been in storage and was told it ran in this configuration but hasn't been used in years. I am rewiring it and don't want to see the white smoke so I am running wires just as they are now. I am also wondering the best place to put fuses on this machine. Any advice and ideas is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the responses!

I would be interested to know how the two prong (on off) ignition switch is wired. I would guess that one wire goes to ground and the other is run to the points side of the magneto. It would be ON in the Off position and visa versa. PLEASE, be sure no voltage is applied to your magneto, points or condenser;  "White Smoke Warning"

Your generator light probably isn't hooked up at all because it is wired from the key switch to the starter switch and would need a hot wire at the ignition switch. Without a battery voltage source at the ignition switch it wouldn't work.

There is a large cable from the  battery to the start push button and another large cable from the push button to the S/G. That terminal also has a smaller wire feeding the light switch, that is where a fuse should be added.

Pleas ask any questions you may have.

I will let yall see what it looks like after the rewire and before I power it up. We have grandkids for a few days and who knows when I will get back on it.
