csvt99 173 #1 Posted April 7, 2023 I have a thread going about some starting issues with my 314-8. That thread is here. 314-8 slow to start - Engines - RedSquare Wheel Horse Forum When I took the air cleaner off to look at the choke plate, I noticed there was some gas or oil that had come through. I recently had this issue on my 8 hp 877 only it was much worse. I cleaned and rebuilt the carb and now it is fine. Do I need to do the same thing with this one? See pic below. Also, the oil level is higher than the Full line, but it is possible that I just overfilled it as I did change the oil earlier this week. I guess I could always drain a bit of oil out and see if the level increases again. The oil was checked on a cold motor. Thanks for your input.
csvt99 173 #2 Posted April 7, 2023 Reposting since the first time didn't seem to work with the photos. Also, looks like the oil is coming from the breather off the top of the motor. Is this normal?
RED-Z06 2,567 #3 Posted April 7, 2023 Its possible the carb is flooding and letting fuel into the engine, this thinned out oil would be more apt to blow up into the valve cover and breather tube. Does the dipstick smell like gas? Drip it onto a paper towel, oil will typically be slow to absorb but a gassy mix will pull right into the towel. 1
lynnmor 7,809 #4 Posted April 8, 2023 Some oil mist is to be expected from the breather. The liquid may be too much depending how it was operated. My concern is the dust that is seen on top of the air filter element. With the pre-filter not having some oil and seeing dust I wonder if you are dusting the engine. Maybe a better view will show that I may not be seeing the whole picture.

Under the plate inside the filtered air zone is the breather hose and carb inlet
lynnmor 7,809 #6 Posted April 8, 2023 I didn't think that there should be dust inboard of the red line, correct me if I am wrong.

Not sure on his..but the plate only has a thin edge, it sits down recessed and the lip keeps it from sliding in. Kohler 2409601-S is the part number

Lagersolut 734 #10 Posted April 8, 2023 I removed this air induction tube ( years ago ) covered and sealed both openings shut with sheet metal and sealant - all the dust and debris coming through the chaff screen is forced into the air cleaner housing - before doing this mowing when it was dry would pack dirt and dust around my air cleaner - I always have a little oil dampness being the breather vents right into the carb but not quite that much - this is a design of self destruction IMHO
csvt99 173 #12 Posted April 8, 2023 What does that air induction tube even do? For now I'm going to clean the gunk, drain some of the oil to get the level back down to full, and put it all back together and just monitor it.
RED-Z06 2,567 #13 Posted April 8, 2023 The air induction pipe serves two purposes...1st ot pulls in cooler air from away from the engine, cooler air is more dense and thus, more power. The rush of air also keeps things moving around the filter, this more evenly distributes dust and let's some of it blow out vs settling on the bottom. You can see the affect of unforced air inlets in K series with the bowl filter covers, it often builds up between thevcover and filter.
