Wayne0 1,116 #1 Posted March 6, 2023 My tach (rpm gauge) pins the needle at idle. Any ideas?
lynnmor 7,706 #2 Posted March 6, 2023 Is the gray wire connected to one of the outer terminals of the voltage regulator? Is the mounting bolt for the regulator tight and grounded properly? Is the charging voltage appropriately 14 volts?
Wayne0 1,116 #3 Posted March 7, 2023 (edited) Charging voltage is good (checked) , as i just replaced the regulator. I will check the other stuff. Thanks. Edited March 7, 2023 by Wayne0
Wayne0 1,116 #4 Posted March 27, 2023 Bad connection with the grey wire to the reg. New plug fixed it. Now I'm getting 14.4 volts to the battery, but the gauge says 11 volts. Am I nit-picking?

You are not nitpicking, having the proper charging voltage is important for the life of the battery, lamps and other components. Having a known accurate voltmeter right there in the dash can head off larger issues.

Mechanically everything seems good, so far. Thanks for your help. I love this place! Edited March 28, 2023 by Wayne0
WHX?? 51,370 #7 Posted March 29, 2023 Having four 520's I have come to the conclusion that some of the volt gauges are not accurate. Most of mine read high, 15 volts plus with 12.5 on them measured with a DMM.

Most of mine read high, 15 volts plus with 12.5 on them measured with a DMM. Last year I got an inexpensive marine digital voltmeter off the jungle site to add to a tractor. Tested it out of the box over the 0-20vdc range and it surprised me by being within 0.5v all the way. My theory is that for the analog gauges on our tractors, modest initial accuracy plus all the jouncing around and aging takes a toll,
