KT17 > M14

I have a KT17 in the original 417A but the motor has a bad stator and the governor over revs even when set correctly which leads me to my question.  What do I need to swap a Magnum motor into it?  I have a complete harness already for the Magnum but I heard that I have to change the engine pulley?  Can I run with an 8 speed pulley which the M14 has on it?  I am guessing the ground speed will slow down.

Change the pulley to a hydro pulley.  The clutch hoop is also different from the KT 17 vs the M14.  The charging stator connection is the same on both engines.  Add a 5 pin relay in place of the coil on the KT 17 and use it to kill the M14.  The KT 17 has a powered ignition, the M14 does not.  I'm not sure about the wiring for the oil pressure light, but I'm sure someone else here can help with that.  Hope that helps.

It does help thanks Bill.  Is the hydro pulley bigger or smaller than the 8 speed?

Hydro pulley is larger.

It's larger.  Without the larger pulley transmission cooling is not as effective, ground speed will be slower and I believe transmission damage can occur.  Hydros are designed to run at a constant and relatively high speed.

Also not swapping the pulley changes the belt size and is more trouble than you need

I think the 8 speed pulley is a 4” and the hydro pulley is a 5”.

Best bet would be to contact Lincoln at AZ Tractors in our vendors section and see if he has one.

Can you get the pulley off the KT17 easily?

Hi Bill.  I have not tried yet but that brings up another question. Is the crank diameter the same for a KT17 and a M14?
