There is a time in every project to take it away from the engineer and let it move on.

There is a truck waiting at the loading dock.  Let production have it now.

This point usually comes some time after someone says "lets do X" and before the point when the engineer starts doing things. If you wait too long the engineer actually gets involved, then the mechanics have to spend a bunch of time fixing the things engineering got wrong.
