Do have to split the transmission to install axle seals

No you do not.  This is assuming you don’t need bearings too.  Generally when they wear excessive, they take out the seals.

No, you must remove the hub and then you can pull the old seal out with a seal removal pick or a small screwdriver.

But first you should check the bearing for wear by pushing on the axle.  There should be no up/down or front/back movement.     In/out is OK

If the bearing is bad, you must split the case and replace the bearing or the new seal will also leak.

Here is an illustrated parts list. Then go to the top of the transmission forum and some charts are posted to lists of today's seal and bearing numbers available locally. We also have a vendor that can supply.

Presuming your axles are one inch the seal would be SKF-9815 and the bearing would be KOYO M-16121.

1977 B80 8 speed could be the larger 1⅛  axles.

OK. I was going by the numbers I used on a one inch gear box. Here are the charts I saved from a previous post.

In the 3rd chart above see where I've circled.

Lowell at Wheelhorse Parts and More will have that and they're available at a GOOD local parts store.
