Vertical or horizontal utility light mounting?

Recommended Posts

Panther416-8

I am putting some additional PAR36 rubber housed utility lights that I had on my 416. Does it matter for light projection how they are mounted? Horizontal on top of the hood (bug eye look) or vertical surface on side of hood which I think looks better. The top mounting gets the lights up a little higher but not by much.  I don't know if there is a specific reason for choosing a mounting surface based on the light pattern. Thanks.

The pattern can be rotated by simply turning the bulb. Likely with those bulbs you'll be able to see the light pattern change of you move them but it won't much matter to you.

Like you I'd prefer to mount them on the vertical part. If you want them higher perhaps make an L bracket?

Thanks Eb. I didn't realize the bulbs could be rotated in the rubber housings. Good idea about an L bracket for getting more height. Just mounted temporarily to see how they would look.

Be sure to keep that rubber housing a strong inch from the exhaust stack.

It's a good 2 inches or more away. Should be good. But yeah, I thought about that when first deciding to mount there.

I'd also sit on the tractor with whatever implement you'll have in front positioned as you will use it and be sure the lights are not obstructing your view in any important way AND that the light isn't being obstructed by the implement!

Thanks Don. Main thing is the snowblower.  Once I get that all together I'll check how they are set up.

I always thought the headlights mounted on top of those Fisher snowplow lift frames on pickup trucks looked odd, but they sure do light things up well even when the blade is lifted for travel.

They're up there for DOT compliance.

Don't be apprehensive about putting the lights where they WORK.

Having them look cool on the tractor doesn't help you see where you're going.

Agreed, by rear grader blade has its own light, double duty as reversing lights

Don

True. They need to be located where they will provide the most light for my needs. For me mounting on the side of the hood vs on top does not make much difference therefore just want to mount where they look best.
