BBELL94 25 #1 Posted October 10, 2022 Just picked up a non running 520-8. Has 588 hours on it. Paid $500 for it. Previous owner took the flywheel off trying to diagnose a no spark issue. Did I do alright on this deal and how big of a project is it to put the flywheel back on? Looking forward to getting this beast of a tractor running.
Sparky-(Admin) 23,249 #2 Posted October 10, 2022 Can’t say if it’s a good deal or not since it’s a non-runner. If you get spark back and it runs good then yes. If you dump hundreds into getting spark back and it runs crappy, smokes, knocks or even worse.. only runs on one cylinder it was a lousy deal. Any attachments??

lynnmor 7,846 #4 Posted October 10, 2022 The flywheel is easy to put on, one bolt in the center torqued to 55 lb. ft. The blower tin is a bit of a pain. Before torquing it back up, test the ignition module using the Onan Service Manual available in the manuals section.

I seen some timing marks on the block, do I have to time the flywheel somehow or perhaps maybe its keyed?
WHX?? 51,859 #6 Posted October 11, 2022 It's keyed ... down load the manual and study it ... it will tell you how to trouble shoot the no spark. There are also narks on the shroud that indicate firing points.
kpinnc 14,663 #7 Posted October 11, 2022 If you can check compression on both cylinders, and they're within limits of the manual- you can relax a little. Always been a rule of thumb for me. If it has compression, I can get it to run...

Pullstart 67,008 #9 Posted October 11, 2022 They sure are beasts! Hopefully you can get it up and running in no time
cafoose 3,456 #10 Posted October 11, 2022 Since you have no spark, before you put the flywheel on, make absolutely sure the module is working properly. If not, you will be removing it again and it's a PIA to put all the shrouds on
JoeM 8,391 #11 Posted October 11, 2022 If you find out that the Ignition Module is bad best to be patient and shop around. some go north of $100. Sometimes flea bay has some finds. Cummins owns Onan and they are very proud of their parts.

There is a key, be sure to put it in correctly so the tail of it engages the trigger ring.

JoeM 8,391 #16 Posted October 12, 2022 Might try this, I also have put a ohm meter on the unhooked module wires and should get .4 to 2 ohms reading.
