Hey all. I just picked a c-series with a <16 hp engine with a 16hp sticker on the shroud shroud. Not sure what kind it is supposed to be. The engine has 9 head bolts vs 10 on the 16hp. I have a pic of the ID # but idk how to read them. Got it for $300 with a snow blower, 48” inch deck (no holes) and two extra sets of wheels and tires. It doesn’t really matter but I’m just curious. Thanks.

As Glenn just posted, 1-0380 is a 1974 C-160. However, if the head only has 9 bolts, it is not a 16HP engine.

If it's got 9 head bolts, someone thru on a 16 Shroud or the original 16 was replaced and they used the shroud over. Look on the block on the other side near the pulley. Sometimes a number is cast there.

Agreed.

That tractor has certainly seen it's share of PO repairs and a wild spray bomb of red went off near it.

Any ID tag on the engine?

You did fine on the price nonetheless.

If there is no correct tag on the shroud then the "KXXX" in the casting over the PTO may not properly identify the engine unless it says K321 or K241.

If it says K301, it could be a 10 or a 12hp. Kohler used the K301 castings for both 10 and 12 hp. So if it says K301, the only way to be sure is to measure the valves and bore.

Thanks everyone. I will look. I intend on putting a K341 on it but I was just wandering if it was a c160 or not.
