I have a 1971 800 special that I bought in a half state of disassembly. I have got it basically all put back together and got it running but I think the throttle linkage is incomplete as it won’t allow the throttle plate to return to closed (idle position). There is only one rod running from the governor arm to the butterfly, and one spring running from the throttle control (attached to the throttle cable) to the gov control arm. The PO had put a chinesium carb on it and an after market fuel pump. I rebuilt the original carb and pump that came with the tractor but I think there are springs or rods missing. If anyone can help I’d greatly appreciate it. Attached is the engine numbers and a picture of the linkage as it is right now if that helps anybody help me out!image.jpg.2a83d250c29d814a26a32e447ba3c9c4.jpgimage.jpg.1d59f2cd8287a7c4c9ea862ee903200b.jpg

We have a 1978 eight horse Briggs off a snowblower that I can get some pictures of. Not sure if it will be the same but you're welcome to it.

I'd be super curious to know how you rebuilt that fuel pump. What parts you used? What you did?

I bought this kit : Walbro Fuel Pump Gasket Repair Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006VXALFY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

as I took it apart I just sprayed and cleaned all surfaces then reassembled. Where it threads into the carb I used a small dab of gas safe sealant on the threads.

That looks correct.  Governor arm has 1 rod up to the throttle shaft, spring pulls it down to open the throttle and Governor pushes up to close, fighting the spring.  Have you done a static Governor reset?  Hook it all up, leave the engine off.  Loosen the pinch bolt on the governor shaft.  Use the the throttle shaft to move the throttle to wide open.  Note which direction the slotted shaft rotates when you move the throttle wide open.  With the throttle shaft still wide open, turn the slotted shaft that direction until it stops, then without moving anything, tighten the pinch bolt back down.

I have not and will do so right now to see if it is what’s wrong. Thank you!

Be prepared to kill it, in case something with the governor goes sideways...never know

So the governor shaft does not stop. It just spins left or right with no “boundaries”

That would indicate something has failed mechanically.  Either the shaft has snapped off or the gear has failed...not sure on your exact model but they look something like this..the flat part of the shaft rides on the post in the middle of the gear

There is a year break in 1974 but this is the parts it shows for that model.  So you know what they should look like. Screenshot_20221008-140341_Chrome.jpg.0b5ddda4b4575d1d8782ad73bbb84480.jpg

Thank you very much. This one is a ‘71 so I guess I’ll be pulling the side case off the motor and see what’s going on. Like I said in the original post I got this thing as a basket case and for the $150 I gave for the whole deal if I have to put some parts in it, it doesn’t hurt my feelings much.

I ordered one up to see if it'll work on a couple Tecumseh engines.  Thanks for the link!

If its like the one on OH1XX engines it should work, I used to rebuild those but pitting in the housings made it better to just go to a modern pump

That's exactly what I did on the C160 Tecumsehorse I have running ish...

Left the Walbro pump off and mounted an electric.

It's more of a curiousity thing to me.

I have 2 other C160 Tecumsehorses to attend to later.

I still use pulse style, electric has been hit and miss, i put 2 different electrics on my 312 and both failed in different ways, i built a towable generator cart with a boat tank on it, used an electric on it...tested for 8hrs and it seemed to work.

But the $9 plastic pumps go years, if I want to get fancy ill use a Mikuni or Mikuni copy, their pumps tend to run slightly more volume which..isnt needed at all

Not necessarily, depends on if the control is pull on for throttle or push out for throttle..may universal throttle controls have provisions for both

But the bracket you pictured is identical to my set up so I think I should reroute the throttle cable. Like I said this one was all in pieces so I assumbed the choke went down one side and the throttle went down the other because of their orientation on the dash.

Did you ever make any traction on rebuilding your fuel pump? Mine has been good with no leaks so far.
