312-hydro Wheel Horse Classic 1990

My 312 hydro has the 12hp kohler motor,It has 3 wires white, purple and orange coming out from the stator area but the orange is not hooked up.The stator test around 40 volts ( multimeter test) but the battery is not charging. The regulator is cheap but new (not OEM).My question is the orange wire, what is it for? If I should hook it up? If yes then to what should it be run to?Battery  +?.  My regulator test was a failure but the tractor runs fine besides de-charging.Im searching for alternative reasons for the regulator not working other than its no good.Like cleaning and refitting all ground connections, cleaning and refitting the battery terminals and connecting wires. Is it posable the ignition switch is the wrong one or is failing at one or more poles?   Thanks for any help

There is an orange wire that goes to the low oil switch

One quick test you can do

Turn the key to the RUN position with the engine not running.

Check the voltage across the battery posts.

Now move the red test lead to the B+ terminal on the regulator.

You should have the same voltage.

If not the charge current has no way to get to the battery

I think the Orange is coming from the Low Oil Sentry relay to your dash lights, As Garry said the regulator won't work without battery voltage to the center terminal.

Hi, Im on my 4th Wheel Horse and got a great 12 hp Kohler with low hours. Its a 312 classic with the older style Kohler, not the OHV, probably right before the change.
The throttle at higher speed eventually moves down and I have to re-adjust up to speed. Any suggestions on how to fix? Thanks!

      Hi,
brought home a charger 12. Does anyone know what the ohm reading should be on the coil? Reading on google .4 to 2ohms neg to pos and center tower to pos 6k to 15k sound about right? Will a car 12v work temporary? I am sure kohler has a special coil for that engine prolly x amount primary and secondary windings.

      Thanks Tim O

Hello all, I am new here and today I bought my 1st Wheel Horse, a 1990 312 Hydro in fair condition, 42 " deck and snow plow, new rear tires, a friend of wanted to sell and I think I got a good deal, $500.00. He owned it since 1991 and has always had it serviced at the dealership, starts great and runs strong, a little over a 1000hrs on it, with a lot of TLC this summer, I will have it looking almost like new, I hope. I will post some pics as soon as I can figure out how to resize them.
