Turned the big 200,000 on the Tundra today. My last record was 164,000 on a 94 Chevy. The Tojo is going into the shop Tues for it's pre-show teardown and go thru. Who knows what it will haul back from PA!

I have a Wheel Horse SK486 with a Koehler 341 16hp engine. Both are in “mint” condition. I have noticed that the engine seems to labor if I put it to any heavy work immediately after starting. There is no smoke or coughing, it just sounds like it is working hard. After five minutes (warm up) the condition goes away and the engine can handle any load without breaking a sweat. Should I be concerned? Is this an indication of a problem?

http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/forum/54-glen-pettit-restoration-parts/ Glen Pettit sells these parts and he is right here on our forum. He is right now in the hospital so it might be a bit before he can get back to you. Randy

Mike, you just concentrate on getting well. I don't want you to worry about the 953. You are close enough to the Big Show that I could make a little road trip if needed. In the event you are well enough to make the show we all look forward to seeing you there.

Finally got to go back to Maryland and pick up my grandfathers C-175 wheel horse. He left it and few other tractors after he passed away 2 years ago. Its a 1983 he bought it new in 1984 remember the day it was dropped off. Was one of the first tractors I mowed with. My grandfather made wood blocks so I could hit the clutch pedal. I was 6 years old when he got it no way I could let anyone else have it. Mira been taken care off well but I want to freshen it up some. He replaced the deck a few years ago. I want to replace the drive belts and deck belts along with blades. And tune it up some and replace all fluids.

Last week I drove a few hours north and bought a 42" Snow thrower and a Wheel Horse snow cab. The Thrower is a bit crusty but looks to have good bearings and chain, sprockets. The cab is missing a few pieces of the frame but the canvas looks like it's never been used. No scratches on the plastic windows even. It has a fiberglass roof too. Not ABS. The bad part is some rodents thought the cab canvas was food in a few spots. Maybe I can come up with some matching material and patch? My 416-H currently has a 32" thrower and I wanted to get a 42" so I kept watching CL. The cab is a bonus. BIGMIKE

This poor Commando didn't want to be called yellow, but they chained it up and had their way with it.

Someone should be hog tied and drug around behind that poor WH!

Thanks Randy, I do remember that there would be a bit of a delay. I'm not in a big hurry. All that really matters is that he gets well again.

Yes the dealership is still in business, my local dealer. No rising tractor count behind my name

What's wrong with a little cat poop? I remember as a kid having to throw the stuff out in clumps everytime I went to my sandbox. No side effects from it at all. No side effects from it at all. No side effects from it at all! Wait, maybe that is what is wrong with me now.

Had it twenty-some years ago. Lucky they caught it early. Went through three different antibiotics, two of them at the same time. Only symptom years later is tractor fever. Get well soon. Hope to see you in June. Jim

A good friend and fellow Laborer here got it last year - spent 3wks in the hospital and finally got to go home. He still has some weakness and issues from it, but seems to be slowly getting better with time. Crazy that one little insect can cause that much damage, but they sure can and do... I have noticed that it seems like no two people are affected the same way - yours sounds pretty severe and you might want a second opinion on treatment options, it's definitely not something to ignore or screw around with. Check out my thread in the bumps and bruises section. I'm about to finish my round of antibiotics.

There are some serious differences between single and twin cylinder engines - the one thing everyone leaves out is the torque. Single cylinder, cast iron engines produce a torque variable because of the weight of their rotating mass - it also packs a serious punch. I have a newer green thing with a 22hp Briggs V-twin - it can't hold a candle against the C-160's K-341 single cylinder Kohler driving an equally sized 48" deck in heavy, wet grass. The V-twin might produce more gross HP, but it can't match the single cylinder's torque band - it takes a tremendous load to knock that single off it's power band in comparison. To add to the equation - the WH weighs almost 350lbs more than the JD as well. The standards for HP ratings on small engines have a large range due to compression ratio, valve sizing, and rotating mass. Without the manufacturer giving full hp and torque curves, it's all a guess. To add to the confusion, efficiency in how the power is transmitted to a given implement can be another really huge factor. There are some examples out there of "magic" combinations that are known to work very well - the Kohler big block C-series is at the top of that list. The 520/Onan and the Kohler-equipped D series are also very powerful - but all have their drawbacks. Put a big block Kohler K on any side hill too long - boom. Every one has at least one weak link in the chain, some just show it worse than others. As far as failures, the D tops the list with that engine coupling to its hydraulic system - with the Onan's cooling/valve issues following a close second. It's the same thing with every brand, JD and Cub have had their historical failures to address, no different than WH, nor any better. We could argue over what's better or more desirable until the end of time, but it all comes down to preference and what you're willing to live with in shortcomings - every model has some sort of drawback, you pick your poison and live with it or address the issue. Ok it’s that time of the year again so I decided it was time to break out the wheel horse planter for the first time ever - for the first time it didn’t do to bad - it slipped a few times so I might have to make a few small adjustments or put a small weight on it next time.

Give it a little choke and see if it runs better. My C 160 does that at first also. After a few minutes take the choke off. A cold engine wants a richer mixture.

As Mike said, presuming the roll pin is removed you may have better luck making the steering wheel move down the shaft first. Support the fan gear support that the shaft goes to with a jack stand which will need to be supporting the weight of the tractor. Use a short pipe or other item that will fit over the 3/4" shaft and drive the steering wheel down a bit. Once it is moving a little it will be easier to pull.

Most probably it's original dealership decal. Think I'd start with a good scrubbing, then a liberal application of Mothers mag & aluminum polish. Then, finish with the Johnson's. Maybe test on a small, inconspicuous area first, see how you like it.

I started messing with it tonight, even found an old can Johnson paste wax I tucked away. I am loving the look, something completely different than what I used to doing. one reason I picked this way was that all the original stickers are in place, does anyone know what sticker was under the shift pattern. I have 4 day weekend hope to make some progress on it.

@ebinmaine It is not the world its you. You got hit in the head with a rock too many times. When I was a kid I swore I would never have a garden based on all the work I had do in the ole mans garden. I must have been about 10 years old , so for the last 60 years I kept that promise.

Dick , I was thinking the same thing. All we had was rocks , sticks , dirt and some little green plastic Army men and Chores. Mostly Chores.

Had it two years ago. Went to Dr. for annula checkup but I had been really tired and my knees were much worse than usual. I was thinking it was just old age. She ordered blood work ad it turned out to be Lyme. Never had the bullseye rash. A month Of Doxycyline and blood markers went back to normal and knees got better Then this spring go to Dr. for routine check up lab work shows markers have come back. Another month of Doxycycline. Make sure you get tested every year from now on to make sure it stays gone.... And yes you can get it all over again there is no immunity. What really irritates me is you can get Lyme Vaccine for your pets. A few years ago there was a human vaccine but the producer decided it wasn't worth the potential lawsuits as it wasn't 100% effective (What is??) and there were the usual side effect nausea head aches etc... THANK YOU DAMN LAWYERS

How long has it had the new belt? And by the way, welcome to the forum. Im in Corinth and if you can manage to get the tractor onto a trailer you could swing it buy and I can help you diagnose the issue. Perhaps assist with repair.

Not a problem Russ, we'll take care of it. Even if your tractor can't get loaded, come anyway-- we'll find you a ride to borrow since there will be a few other guys there too or I'll even buy one there if needed. ( just don't expect to be riding a NOS 420 LSE )

@squonkYou should be good for at least another 100,000. I had an 06 Tundra company truck that had 320,000 before the company replaced it with a 2015 Tundra.

You could clean or change the carb jetting to get a little richer mixture. Of course you shouldn’t work any engine hard till it is warmed up. Gasoline that is not watered down with ethanol will also give a richer mixture.

My intention is to get the transmission back together and run the thing until it runs no more. If it fails, I was going to pick up a later model piston to piston set up and install that after refurbishing it. My last idea what is going to be looking at what it would take to swap in Eaton 11 if possible because I have one of those collecting dust around here as well. It yeah, i’d like to keep it original if possible.

I would not use WD-40 as a flush, the diesal fuel will do the same job for a lot less money. Hypoid gear oil is made for posi traction rear ends which produce more heat than most. It won't harm a transaxle, but it is overkill. Regular gear oil is fine and cost less.

Thanks for sharing! Curious why they didn't put shallow paddles on the wheel. Or would that just dig the seeds back up?

BTW Randy I was going to suggest cruising through the shows threads and get some other ideas. Just another suggestion you will also find some guys will honor their dad, mom, grampa etc. if they were connected with the tractor in some way.

I take tractors to about 8 shows per year. How I set up depends on the rules at the show. Some shows will allow you to have your trailer or camper by your display, others don't want any trailers in the display area. Most shows in our area will have card board signs that you can fill out with your information. I took the time to make some out of wood that resemble the grills of each tractor, then I burned my info into the wood. Here is a pic from one show last year.
