10-29-1998 John Glenn returns to space Nearly four decades after he became the first American to orbit the Earth, Senator John Hershel Glenn, Jr., is launched into space again as a payload specialist aboard the space shuttle Discovery. At 77 years of age, Glenn was the oldest human ever to travel in space. During the nine-day mission, he served as part of a NASA study on health problems associated with aging. Glenn, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, was among the seven men chosen by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1959 to become America’s first astronauts. A decorated pilot, he had flown nearly 150 combat missions during World War II and the Korean War. In 1957, he made the first nonstop supersonic flight across the United States, flying from Los Angeles to New York in three hours and 23 minutes. On February 20, 1962, NASA and Colonel John Glenn accomplished this feat with the flight of Friendship 7, a spacecraft that made three orbits of the Earth in five hours. Glenn was hailed as a national hero, and on February 23 President John F. Kennedy visited him at Cape Canaveral. Glenn later addressed Congress and was given a ticker-tape parade in New York City. Out of a reluctance to risk the life of an astronaut as popular as Glenn, NASA essentially grounded the “Clean Marine” in the years after his historic flight. Frustrated with this uncharacteristic lack of activity, Glenn turned to politics and in 1964 announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate from his home state of Ohio and formally left NASA. Later that year, however, he withdrew his Senate bid after seriously injuring his inner ear in a fall from a horse. In 1970, following a stint as a Royal Crown Cola executive, he ran for the Senate again but lost the Democratic nomination to Howard Metzenbaum. Four years later, he defeated Metzenbaum, won the general election, and went on to win reelection three times. In 1984, he unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for president. In 1998, Glenn attracted considerable media attention when he returned to space aboard the space shuttle Discovery. In 1999, he retired from his U.S. Senate seat after four consecutive terms in office, a record for the state of Ohio.

I bit the bullet and bought 10.5 x 12 rim blanks and centers from miller tire. I also bought 26x12x12 firestone floatation 23s from miller tire. Here are the pics of making them.

I like your way of thinking Craig...when I was about 13 we had a truck hauling a load of shoes turn over and catch fire a few miles from our house...upon putting out the fire they loaded all the shoes in dump trucks and dumped them in our pasture by our trash pit. About a year later Dad and I decided to finish burning them. Over the past year the pile had been infested with rats, which commenced to jumping out after we lit the fire. Dad and I sat on the tailgate of his truck with our shotguns and shot them out of the air as they jumped out of the fire...most fun I can remember having as a kid growing up lol

Getting a lot closer. A bunch more parts show up Monday, and then just waiting on the decals to ship. Plus I have to do the exhaust yet. I am glad that my 15yo son is helping and having a blast.

And why is it that it's always in the worst possible place . Are we missing something does electrical wire taste that good ?

I run non resistor plugs as they have proven to work better in my old farm tractors with mags or 6 volt battery ignitions. Also use solid copper core plug wires to make for better spark. If it interferes with some electronic device of some yuppie driving by in his BMW then its too bad.......

Had a chance this afternoon to install the gas tank I made up for the BIG TEN. Was missing the original air filter assembly when I got the tractor, so I also had to "Macgyver" something up for that till I find the correct cover. Got everything back together and started her up and took her for a test run. Everything checked out great.

John Robert says Thank you 19Richie66 for this fine set of AG tires and wheels that we did some Horse trading for last weekend. I use this tractor for mowing in some of the more unfinished / borderline rough areas here, and the old tires were slipping on the hillside off camber turns and sometimes when backing uphill or out of a low spot. Anyway, thank you Richie for these AG's. They are just what was needed.

Got a call this morning to work on a Kubota tractor that a packrat had gotten into...pulled the dash apart and found this mess, as well as the little fella still in there with it...never knew a guy could dismount a tractor that quick lol

Its been a while since Chuck (SOI) has posted anything. As I have said in the past, electrical is one of my many short comings. I have always enjoyed Chuck's posts and tutorials and I have learned a few things. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what happened to Chuck, the squirrel guy. -Chris

I may be mistaken but I believe it's a damper. It was one of the ways they slowed the engagement of the clutch. It came into play at the end of the idler arm travel. Check out part #53 on page 2 of this parts list for a 1990 312-8.

Lucas is great stuff, but considering as said above that many transmissions have been running fine for years with a combination of oil and water, the cheap Walmart stuff is my choice.

Look at the bottom of the transmission case. The center case bolt creates a hump across the transmission that traps a fair amount of lube in front of it. Make sure you lift the front of the tractor far enough to get that to drain out.

Well--we made it to Bluniers last night at about 4:45pm! We immediately unloaded the tractors... and then got to work! Conditions weren't perfect (a little sticky from the .5" rain on Wednesday) but still really good. The temps were perfect at about 60 degrees. So we plowed for two hours, then stopped for an awesome chili dinner (thank you Blunier family) then we went back out for another hour or so! Caleb (my son) was the last guy in the field until I lured him off the seat with the temptation of food!

Weighing in at 5#12oz this little sweetheart became our 5th grandchild at 6:00pm yesterday. It was a rather event filled pregnancy and no doubt accounted for a few more gray hairs for grandma and grandpa. As a precaution they decided to induce labor a bit early but Mom and baby Ilyssa Ann are doing great. Here's her three bodyguard brothers. They just might come in handy years down the road.

I don't even know it is back there with that duramax with tuner.... i only use low gear when dragging you and the full trailer.

As of today, the 655 is finished! I am very happy with how it tuned out, it runs great and the snow is just around the corner to really try it out. The mower deck still needs some work, but that will get done some time this winter. Decals tuned out great and really put the finishing touches on the tractor. I am glad I repainted the hood and belt cover, the finish improved a lot.

After seeing these transmissions run for years with water and sluge in them and work just fine. I think any clean oil will work just fine. The uni drive trans was one of the best small trans made. In my opinion.

Got the rest of the sheet metal painted and installed. Bedliner is on the floorboards. Now to wait on the rest of the little parts, and pry this weekend start on the engine rebuild.

Howdy everyone, I'm new here and new to Wheel Horses. I recently picked up a old Wheel Horse to restore and am needing help figuring out what I've got.

sounds to me like its a bad battery. I had one that did the same thing and it had a bad cell ,check the voltage then put battery charger on it and let it set for a day, then check the voltage again if it has gone down by a half volt it more then likely is bad cell. And do what 953 nut said clean all connections first. Before I would start putting money in alternators or regulators I would change the battery it would only be about $30.00 or $35.00.

Jumped at the chance today to get a start on freshening this up... after burning out my angle grinder with wire wheel (old cheapie that lived a good life) I spent the entire afternoon with a little gravity pot sandblaster. Went from here To here today. Hoping to be able to finish prep and maybe priming yet tomorrow .

Great day today plowing at Bluniers! I really enjoyed getting to officially meet Dave and his lovely wife and family! @dtallon had a sweet collection of horses but an even sweeter family! Glad to meet you sir! I believe all the horses pictured here are his except GhostRider... he can chime in and correct me. I met so many people today I'm trying to keep them all straight. It was a great day turning soil! more lengthly post to follow...

I cheated....They are on permanent snow duty. Just fired them up an moved them down from the storage shed. One more deck to finish cleaning up and the summer horses will all be back in the shed for the winter.

The Recipe Ole 3 step is. 1) Tin Aluminum Pie Tin. 1) Hefty Table Spoon of Golden Malrin Fly Bait. 2 if yer feelin MEAN! 1) Hand full of ;Lil Marshmellows. 1) Can of Reg Coke that went flat "NO FIZ" Mix it up and let the sweet eating critters enjoy. 3 steps and they will fall over deader than a door nail. If year lucky they will crawl off and die.

The dang things are named "pack rats" for a reason too! (along for the taste for wire insulation) My son and I were working on his truck and had pulled the radiator, on reassembly a few days later we could NOT find the radiator cap. After couple hours of frustration looking we gave up and needing to get him back on the road, went and bought another cap.... Bout 3+ years later was cleaning out a scrap lumber shelf and down underneath was a MESS among which was the lost radiator cap!! Along with a favorite screwdriver I was missing and couple dozen shiny screws/nuts washers, etc and of course the requisite gazillion acorns and dog food!

Well, people see things differently .... Looking at that picture some see a pile of parts being sold for profit and the loss of another Wheel Horse no longer to be enjoyed in this hobby. I see a bright red tractor tilling up the ground after hours in the garage turning coal into a diamond. If the hood is the only scarry part I'll give you a perfect hood. I don't mind buying a Wheel Horse that looks like that. It may take a lot of time to make it look nice, But I have a lot of time and not a lot of money. Someone tried to fix it. Air cleaner was off, coil was missing. I put a $17 Chevy Cavalier coil in it. There was a hydro leak. (pipe fitting) Above deck. When I got done with it I had $310 total invested. And many hours. It was just too big for me so I sold it for $800.

Indexing the spark plug will also help to increase power and torque. This is when the open gap faces the center of the piston. It helps in a more thorough combustion of the fuel so the engine will produce more power at high RPM. Indexing washers is used to index a spark plug. They're a copper washer of certain thicknesses that's placed on the threads of the plug. Indexing of the spark plug helps to increase the power on a high-performance engine that operates at high RPM. It doesn't help much on a stock engine or at low RPM. Taken from Brian Millers website

No problem....links to Craigslist are posted here constantly and it gives us Admins and Mod's something to do...LOL! Just so you know....all 16Auto's, C-160's and C-161's have Sundstrand hydro's. None of them came with an Eaton1100. The first Eaton1100 equipped tractors were the late 1980 Black Hoods. Early 1980 BlackHoods still had the Sundstrand. Mike.....

Personally a restoration on a tractor that appears as far gone as photo suggests is in my opinion an act of charity or love of hobby. I doubt you will flip it for profit. And that's if you don't cost in labor. if however you enjoy the journey and like to resurrect old machines, it's a definitely a good project.

If this tool proves out, I might consider making them to sell. If I had the bolt sizes and patterns plus hub center sizes (hole size in wheel) for other popular Wheel Horses, I could incorporate those into the same tool. Hint: they would be expensive, but there is economy in quantity as I would run them on a CNC. Should I make more, the handle will be recessed into the disk and the disk would be made of heat-treated alloy steel.
