7 pointsYou are correct, it's just that Wheel Horse broke thier own rule yet again. In the early C series days, hydros were "automatics" regardless of manual or hydraulic lift. Once the Classic numbered series (300/400/etc) came out, it got fuzzy. I assume the exports had something to do with it. The domestic 518-H had Eaton 700 and manual lift. The export 518-H had Eaton 1100 and hydraulic lift. 417-A had Eaton 1100 while 312-A and 314-A had 700. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples. Kind of like the model 701. If they truly followed their own rules, it would have been a 751. I shouldn't say "broke" thier rules, rather they loosely followed them in many cases.

7 pointsI had a battery start Onan powered genset. When the Onan died, I added a drive pulley and did some replumbing. Now I park it in front of a WH and drive it off the PTO. The Onan is an air compressor while the generator has 110V AC and 12VDC outputs. This is what happens when you get cabin fever in the winter.

6 pointsI don't need the generator and I certainly don't need another project but the price was certainly right, free. It's dirty from sitting but clearly there's not many hours on it. It was locked up tight and I couldn't be sure if it was the engine or generator head so I opened things up. Once I got this far I found that it would rotate just shy of one turn before stopping solidly. It was definitely in the engine. I kept going and found this. Apparently the spring retainer left home and the valve dropped into the cylinder. It completely punctured the head and was jammed tight. The head is toast. The piston wasn't hurt and I think the pushrods are fine but I'll check them better today. I first assumed that a new head would end this project and I'd just salvage the power head but I found a used head complete with the valves, springs and rockers for 40 some bucks so now I'm pondering. It's not worth putting a lot into it, especially for me since I don't need it, but I would a reasonable amount. I figure I'll scrounge up a service manual. I didn't see one here for the overhead valve models What would you guys do? This unit will clean up to near new condition and could be a nice little generator.

4 pointsThe motor head in me would fix it up and flip. Bill is right you should check the key. Couple of pry bars and have Nancy wack it with the skillet?

4 pointsHave used heim joints for decades. Have some of various sizes in a drawer. Running low on them so I use them judiciously. Also have various types and sizes of the rod ends. Quick disconnect and regular. Have used the quick disconnect many times and not had a problem. They do make it easy to reset toe in, especially if one end of tie rod is not adjustable. Plus they were free. Former place of employment scrapped them as overstock since no one was buying replacements. The mechanically minded employees snatched them right up. If they lasted forever on a lift truck , they will do well on a garden tractor.

4 pointsMost people don’t like horse jokes, so I’m going against the rein. I love a good horse pun, but then I’m a little unstable. What does it mean if you find a horseshoe? Some poor horse is walking around in his socks. Why are horses such bad dancers? They’ve got two left feet. I put a bet on a horse to come in at 10 to 1 – and it did! Unfortunately all the others came in at 12.30.

3 pointsHillbilly Knows Best A hillbilly farmer from back in the hills walked twelve miles, one way, to the general store. 'Heya, Wilbur,' said Ron, the store owner. 'Tell me, are you and Myrtle still making fires up there by rubbing stones and flint together?' 'You betcha, Ron. Ain't no 'tother way. Why?' 'Got something to show you. Something to make fire. It's called a "match". 'Match? Never heard of it.' 'Watch this. If you want a fire you just do this,' Ron says, taking a match and striking it on his trousers. 'Huh. Well, that's something, but that ain't for me, Ron.' 'Well, why not?' 'I can't be walking twelve miles every time I want a fire and borrow your trousers.

3 pointsCL find... B-80 $50 - 20 minutes away!!! Cranks over with jumpers. Wiring, tie rods, battery, few other odds and ends will need some love. Oh, and the hand painted patina is to die for...
-
3 pointsGood advise. The sputter may be at the transition point of coming from the idle circuit and onto the main one. Try richening up the main a bit.... The idle mix screw is solid - the main is not. It is hollow and has a set of tiny air bleed holes that must be kept fully open. If there is a restriction or clog, the carb most likely will never be able to be properly adjusted. Severely worn throttle shaft & bores (bushings) can also make for erratic or impossible tuning... The attached Kohler carb Manual is extensive, but packed with good info. Kohler_Carb_Manual_TP-2377-E.pdf
-
3 pointsThe Carter carbs are usually the better ones. A good starting point is 2 turns on the main jet (top screw) and 1 1/2 turns on the low speed jet (side screw)

3 pointsNot always, I think the 417A had the 1100 hydro. The manual lift is a better indicator of a 700 hydro.
-
3 pointsother than the obvious maintainence tasks one that is often overlooked is to replace the gas line - -they can rot internally and the little fragments travel potentially to carb -- also suggest washing out gas tank - enjoy !
-
3 pointsAwesome so i did pretty well lol. I literally just bought it to snowblow. My quad with bucket is a real pain at times. lol. I plan on changing all the fluids before i really start running it. I did read the 700 is a bit on the weak side....but like i said i dont plan on using it hard. I got a cub and 2N for that stuff lol

2 pointsOr another way to describe it is the hydraulic lift indicates an 1100 transmission on Eaton equipped models. Occasionally you run across a 700 with electric lift added.
-
2 pointsCheck the thrust bearing on the end of the PTO. If those start to seize up it will cause problems as well.

2 pointsHow to Buy a Horse Ethan walks into a barn with a farmer to buy a horse The horse is laid down in some straw. After giving the horse the once-over Ethan says, "This horse hasn't got any shoes on." The farmer replies "Well he hasn't got up yet.

2 pointsNot sure where in Florida you reside, but around us we have the Lake Michigan sand dunes, especially Silver Lake. I’ve seen quite a few aired down ribbed tires on rear wheel drive vehicles scoot across the sand and quite a clip. Any other surface and I bet there is no benefit… but sand?
-
2 pointsYou will probably want to remove the flywheel & check the key - the sudden stop of rotating parts - at speed - most likely caused an issue with the key, and perhaps the connecting rod.
-
2 pointsFor the front steering they'd be fine. My cautionary statement above is referring to the rears. I would NOT use a straight ribbed tire for drive traction.
-
2 pointsPulley was a bit bent but not bad. Used sockets and long rods to get bearings out. I got a deck from @sqrlgtr that had the bad bearings so I used the bearings from my rotted deck. Had extra pulleys and stuff anyway working with two decks to make one good one. Rebuilt the tip on my Hobart mig so going to try to patch two holes in the @sqrlgtr deck

2 pointsNice score. I like the tall chute single blower for clearing snow to. Best of luck.
-
2 pointsWhy? Are they currently leaking? Badly cracked? Unless AND until they really are trash I'd be prone to leave them right alone and running. Agreed. And I'd even add to that. ANY moisture (morning dew) is going to be a near zero traction situation. If they're the straight rib airplane tires... I ABSOLUTELY DISAGREE. As far as pricing goes... IF you need wheels, that's where the $$$$ will be. Shipping wheels isn't cheap. BUT if you look in the right place you can find inexpensive trailer (camper or utility) wheels on a few websites. Or... CALL Lincoln at A to Z Tractor in PA and order a good used set of narrow wheels with the correct Wheelhorse backspacing. That's important.

2 pointsWhere do you come up with all these off-the-wall thoughts? Stick with turf tires on the rear, the airplane tires are ribbed and offer very little traction.

2 pointsPut my second coat of boiled linseed oil on my 1958 patina Wheel Horse RJ i bought last August in Indianapolis! i really love this one! Joe Papke just finished redoing the Schnacke recoil o put back on with one of my stainless steel hex nuts i had made for a Kohler Schnacke application. I had the Hex nut made so you could reverse it if it wears groves in the hex from The three metal dogs in the recoil! This one has the original oil bath air cleaner and amazingly a hood with no cracks in the metal around the gas tank neck hole! Yes motor smokes some and i really have not run it much but thats ok with me! It started on the very first pull of the Schnacke after i turned the gas line valve open and set the choke door on the carburetor! IMG_4493.mov IMG_4495.mov IMG_4492.mov

2 pointsGreat deal. the working tall chute blowers sell for $200. Just a word of caution, the 314A has the weaker Eaton 700 hydro transmission that is not approved for ground engaging implements like a dirt plow or disc or grader blade. It should work fine with the blower or a mowing deck. Another quirk with the 700 hydros is the engine is not running, they can not be rolled. Do not attempt to tow as the transmission may be damaged.
