6 pointsJust looking at that and realizing how many components are “critical to operation” and how many different skills come into play to keep it happy would give me pause and instigate a TON of questions. My great-grandfather was the head of physical plant at Coney Island Hospital in the 1920’s & 1930’s--complex and demanding in its day. I’m sure some of his genes have shaped my “jack of all trades” appetite.

5 pointsNot a hospital, but this 150 ton York chiller was used to keep the 150,000 gallon of water in my hydro turbine test stands at a constant 70*. It was not happy quite often.

5 pointsReplaced muffler from parts 310-8 to 312-8 Ive been converting to Electric fuel pimp on. Got everything back together and fired right up, well after I let the epump fill lines and bowl up on carb. Works great this is one of the smoothest running 12hp kohlers Ive ever had powerfull and not a hint of smoke . Notice the tie rod in pic both look like that so thats next on list. Forgot pic of mower deck but its in great shape also. I dont belive this mochine was used alot it has a little over 500hrs showing on meter. This is the mochine I had to buy to het the 520H and really didn’t want it but glad I pulled the trigger on them .

5 pointsSwapped decks on the Commando... the old one is pretty beat and as luck would have it, I had the same exact deck in stock that I had purchased last year just because. Mounted up in a few minutes, replaced the broken PTO spring and went mowing. Mows like a dream. In case any one is interested, this is a 36" deck, model 5-2362, and the wheels are 5.5" in diameter on both decks. Not sure if ether set is original, but it works great.

5 pointsShould have called, this could have gotten much worse in a hurry. Glad you got it out but as a former volunteer fireman I can tell you they would have been glad to roll up on an extinguished fire and would help you clear out the shed to be sure there were no hot spots.

4 pointsI woke Morgan, the 14-8 up from his winter hibernation today. Mowed the lawn for the first time this year at our Michigan location. It was about a month overdue. Had to use 2nd gear, low range in some areas, the grass was so heavy. The blades on the deck were not cutting cleanly, making me think it is time to touch them up. Will have to take a good look at the spindles and bearings while I'm doing that as well. At one point, the deck stopped. Oh goodie, what now, I'm thinking. While I'm taking a closer look at the drive belt to make sure it had not twisted, I spotted the problem. A corn cob was wedged in the bottom of the mule drive. Easy fix. Fluids change is on the to do list for him in the not too distant future.

4 pointsIf it needs a part that’s worth as much as the tractor I’d part it out. If it’s rusted to the extent it’s worth more in parts than whole I’d part it out. If it’s a running driving tractor in savable or overall good to decent condition I wouldn’t.

4 pointsFD Love to use their Fire axes! We had a big construction job going on at work and there was a staircase that was boarded up on both ends. A smoke detector tripped on top of the stairs and the alarm went off and here come Geneva's finest. We searched for the detector and concluded it was in the stair well. Those guys whipped the axes out like they were six shooters!

4 pointsAfter a relaxing day yesterday, I worked on the 42” RD deck today. I figured since it was 90% apart I’d paint the pulleys, springs and the parts you could see. It was in the 80’s and 90’s today so perfect painting weather. With the exception of a small rainstorm which then the painted parts went under cover, the weather was great. I’ll let it dry and put it together later or tomorrow once it dries. The plan is to get it working good, and put it back under the 308 for now. The goal is for my parents to use the 308 for now as my parents Cub Cadet lawn mower went to the great lawn in the sky over the weekend.

3 pointsI burned some trash in the burn barrel yesterday same as I've been doing for 60 years. I came in, ate dinner and looked out about an hour later and saw smoke coming from around the shed door. I ran out and cracked the door to see black smoke and intense heat. Closed the door and ran to the other barn to turn on the hose. Lucky I had the hose nearby to water the garden. I cracked the door and the flames erupted in the front corner. It took about 30 minutes to get things cooled down enough that I could go inside and concentrate the water on the hot spots. This is a 30 yo T-111 shed that I covered with metal several years ago. So I had heat between the metal and wood that I was finally able to get the water on. Sure could have used you Don O. Mrs. K wanted to call the local Fire Co. but, I assured her I Got This. I'm guessing a spark from the burn barrel found it's way under the metal and lit it up. I had some vinyl siding stored overhead that all melted and covered everything. Shelves full of plant bedding trays, rope, buckets, everything plastic melted. Three square foot holes were burnt thru the floor and the corner wall where the fire started. Repaired the holes today. The lawn sweeper is really all that was lost. It was right over the floor hole. The log splitter and crab pots and traps were in the rear corner and were not damaged. Some of the plastic duct on the Trac Vac melted and the paint on the 310 was damaged. It may buff out with a buffing compound. This can of starter fluid was sitting here on the Trac Vac Briggs. Note the melted cap. Me thinks I was seconds away from a total burn down. The burn barrel has been relocated.

3 pointsI have been behind a few days just due to the yard work around here. The (I really need to pick a model name/ number for this machine) best worker got some mowing in. The Vanguard and the modified 48SD really work well together.

3 pointsAs an overall nearly always fully capable powerplant I'd say that may be the best bang for the buck Wheelhorse ever had. Some use less fuel. Some are more powerful. But the pros and cons on that 12 HP engine are excellent.

3 pointsDisconnect the wire to the condenser and see if the symptoms go away. An engine will run without the condenser, it is there to protect the points from burning. If an engine idles well, but runs erratically when revved up, like it hits and misses, pops and backfires, then chances are, it needs a new condenser/capacitor. And always install a condenser/capacitor with the wire facing downward so rain water and/or when washing off engine, water will not enter inside condenser/capacitor, ruining it. With water inside the condenser, this will also allow it to idle well, but cause it to run erratically when revved up.

3 pointsThe oil pan gasket finally shipped this morning but...USPS I suspect it will be creased right between the "O" and "T" in "DO NOT BEND" but we'll see. Installed in-line fuses for the clutch and ammeter. Not much else to do until I get the block bolted down.

3 pointsBurn barrels can ruin your day. A few yrs ago while my GF was buring garden cleanup in the side yard, the yard caught fire 20 feet from the house. Protip: You can't put out a grass fire by throwing a tarp over it. Sure it LOOKS like its out but who knew... plastic is flammable. In my defense, it did buy me 3 min to get the hose.

2 points@Ed Kennell I’m glad to hear that you made a good stop on the fire, but I agree with Mrs. K and you should have called the FD. Never in my 38 years as an active volunteer fireman have I gone to a call and heard “You shouldn’t have called the fire department” We as firefighters are there to help our community in a time of need no questions asked. Thermo cameras help us find hidden hot spots to prevent rekindling of fire. Also happy to hear that you didn’t get hurt and have no major damage.

2 pointsWe have a 350 ton McQuay Magnetic bearing chiller that does the main hospital. There is NO back up! It likes to go down on the 4th of July Holiday. It has a control board that is cooled by refrigerant. That board had a bad connection and it melted the main plug in for it. They stuck one of those wood clamps like Uncle Fester used to keep the plug into the board until parts arrived. board alone was 10 grand! We just de-commissioned a 350 ton steam absorption chiller in another building as parts are no longer made and it needs a ton of work. There's a 200 ton Rental unit sitting outside that struggles to keep up on the hot days.

2 pointsThere were a couple of important variations on the gear decks to consider when parts swapping. On the ’68 deck, the cast iron bearing holder had raised shoulders around the eight holes where the gear holders attached through slightly larger holes in the shell to ensure proper alignment of shell to bearings/blades. On later models (’66 onward?) the spindles were ⅛” longer to accommodate thrust bearings (instead of only thrust washers) below the spindle gear increasing the longevity and smoothness of the deck. Hardest bits to find in good condition are the gears so if you have a decent set, hang onto them Keeping them excessively greased is the best practice (it needn’t be expensive grease). If you DO choose to dismantle the deck for parts, be sure to mark both face and spindle gears with the side of the deck they came from and the spindle gears with which side was up. When putting them on another deck, put each gear set on the OTHER SIDE since they will be less worn in that direction!

2 pointsSome digital multimeters will pick up interference with the engine running so not any help with diagnosis. Most older analog meters with a needle do much better. Perhaps you could borrow one or replace the original with an automotive style the same size. They are not that expensive.

2 pointsIt’s been a while since I updated on this thread about my 1257. Almost a couple years ago I sold the sickle bar, like a fool, to fund another project. But I made plans with a dude to meet me at the big show next month to buy another one, which also will be my first time at the show. I got a seat from Matt Castagno recently and he did a very good job, looks sharp. My other one was original and I tried to save it and stuff it and paint it with vinyl fabric paint, but all it did was wear off almost immediately. I updated the front spindles to new old stock ones that are about an inch taller, makes up for the bigger tires in the rear and levels out the tractor some. Just last night, I installed a hitch from wheelhorsepartsandmore. He did a great job, seems pretty heavy duty and looks great, can’t wait to try it out eventually. Of course there’s other small things like maintenance and small oddball things, like new shifter boot and touching up, oil change, lube, etc. I’m sure I’ll be following up on this when the time comes.

2 pointsThe 312-H at my son’s place got it’s share of TLC this weekend. Saturday: take off the snow blade & wheel weights, sharpen and lube recycler deck and install Today: swapped in LED headlights, and a new battery (O’Reilly’s), rewired the power for the seat-back utility light, and installed a rear rock shaft (made by @JoeM & bought at the BS last year), lift cable, and sleeve hitch. Found a couple of item’s we’ll have to get to soon. Maintenance is never ending!

2 pointsStarted putting Epump on 312-8 today. Got bracket made to mount pump behind motor. Found break in sheetmetal that holds seat gas tank bracket so got that straightened out, then pressure washed machine. Put new bushing and fuel cut off in tank and got new fuel line run. Got hungry and had to quit for the day. Also had to get home b4 warden got in. Had a visitor while working today and he/she exemplified the ol saying meaner than a black snake, it would run dog then dog would run it funny as he77.
