I use 80 wt. because I have it. But I would not hesitate to use 30w motor oil. I think the lighter oil would be a better choice for the bearings. The gears in the hydro differentials seem fine with the 30w.

If you have no success replacing the fitting you could plug the hole with JB Weld and replace the bearings with prelubed and sealed bearings that are now available.

Finally another update. I managed to source every individual piece to install a slot hitch. All pieces came in over the last couple weeks and today finally had some time to put every thing together.also took the AG tires off the 77 for temp use on this one so I can dig out the garden.

I like to use E-Z Lok solid wall thread inserts. They come in standard and thin wall. To use the standard wall, you drill and tap and install. To use the thin wall, you drill and tap and then use a slightly bigger drill to remove the peaks of the internal threads, then install.

That kind of zero turn won't get stuck on wet leaves!

This was more of a Wheel Horse tractor accessory day. The old ATV tires that were on my trailer that I sometimes use behind my tractors needed some TLC. One tire had developed a leak, both needed valve stems and had pretty severe weather cracking. So I had some extra tractor tires which held air and some spare hubs so I swapped them. I may swap them back later but at least now I can move and use the trailer until I decide what I want to do.

Forgive me father Pond, I have strayed to the green side. Please don't ban my Redsquare account I have a friend who says, " Even a A blind hog finds an Apple every now and then" A local estate sale had this tractor for sale on FBMP and at the sale for way to much. The previous owner had 10 acres of horse pasture that he shredded. Around here Estate Sales are outrageous price Thursday, 25% off outrageous 2nd day, and 1/2 off 3rd day getting closer to reasonable. I was the last person on the 3rd day just looking around and she was counting cash to close. I didn't intending to buy a tractor, but sure needed something I could put a post hole digger on for some repairs on the family farm. We have a great guy leasing the 300 acre family farm for cattle. But we are responsible for the 3+ miles of exterior fencing. Being in Texas I guess I should call this our "Ranch", but Dad always called it the Farm! Thankfully we don't need to build new fence, but there are cedar line post every 5th T post that are rotting off at the bottom, especially where there are low spots that stay wet longer. I'm the youngest son in the family, and still able to do some work around the place I inquired about the tractor and she said she couldn't do 50% off on it. I made her an offer and she took my number and said it would continue to be on FBMP. 2 weeks later I got a call and she said she needed to wrap up the estate sale and get seller their money. I interpreted that as, if she didn't sell the tractor she wouldn't get her 30% commission off it. She played the game of she had other offers to call and got me $500 higher. Surprisingly wife said "Go for it", you've been looking for something and you won't have to work on it before you use it like your backhoe one' PS there was kind of a wife jab there about my greasy farm clothes....the old Oliver always has a oily hydraulic seep somewhere. So its a 2021 John Deere 1023E with loader and shredder. It had 67 hours. I didn't steal it, but a really good price! I even got to transfer the last 6 months of the 5 year warranty over to me! The old Oliver doesn't have power steering, plus the JD hydro transmission with foot control sure is nice for light work. In 2 weeks I've put 7 hours on it shredding 2 passes around the perimeter fencing, and cleaning up some light brambles and dead wood along the fences. A lot more could be done around the farm, but we owe it to our leaser to maintain the fences When I got it the bucket didn't have a single scratch in it. I've put a few! Nice 4 ft shredder Going through the service list I've greased everything. But see it has an initial 50 hr engine and transmission oil and filter change. I can tell the filters are the black factory painted one with no writing, so I need to do that. Interestingly besides the transmission hydraulic filter, it has a screen to remove and clean for the pump suction. While most would consider this subcompact too small, I like that I can put it on a 16 ft trailer and pull it with my 1/2 ton truck. It weights 2600lbs I have my my old White Oliver 2-44 for any heavy work. With loaded tires it weights just under 10,000 lbs. With the weight of the backhoe and a bucket full of gravel it can put all 44hp of diesel grunt to that back axle. I try to be careful, as I really think it has enough grunt to break that heavy back axle.

Replaced the rubber hood latches on my 314. Used a rivet tool I bot at Harbor Freight. I put in the four rivets, and the Harbor Freight tool promptly broke. Like it was supposed to. Since I bot it that day, got my pesos back. You can't take HF seriously.

I'm not even remotely familiar with the (semi) local show scene. We've been going to a couple per year. Owl's Head Transportation Museum is very welcoming to all exhibitors for all shows. Normally we attend the Truck & Tractor show but we've been really enjoying the Air Show. This year we have a lot going on in the camping & hiking schedule and also MANY things happening at home. Only one tractor related show for us this year. @JCM Jim's event in September.

After some 50 mph winds, one of the brush piles re-ignited. There was no safety issue because we had disk the field but this fire showed no evidence of smoke before I left for home. This one was partially burned five days ago. It was monitored until rain started. Got to be careful when burning piles.

Pretty much whatever kind of gear oil you have laying around. Anything between 80w and 80w140. Gl4 or gl5 does not matter because there's no brass or other yellow metal inside a Wheelhorse transmission. Quantity is 2 quarts.

Just guessing with all the holes in the hub from bolting through that the axle broke. They were the orginals off the 702 flame. Lot of scrubbing with this.

Yep, they are clearly operating at idle. The fertilizer truck arrived just as Elam finished. The Elam went over the field again. Notice the two outside horses are black buggy horses. The colt on the left is in training, learning to pull in step and follow voice commands. Then David and 4yo Amos are laying irrigation tubing and plastic. The pumpkin, watermelon, and cantaloupe plants that are growing in the greenhouse will be planted thru the plastic with a wagon wheel planter after last frost. The plants will be fed fertilized water thru the line under the plastic.

This is swiss porridge 2 cups of heavy whipping cream whipped 32oz container of vanilla yogurt mix in. 1/2 cup brown sugar mix in 2ish cups of old fashioned oats I don't usually measure it, but the more oats you add it will be a little drier, less oats is creamer. After this I take it out of the mixer into a large bowl that has a lid and hand mix in the rest. 2-3 cans of mixed fruit, 2-3 cans of mandarin oranges, 1 can of crushed or cut pineapple, a bag of frozen mixed or just strawberry's, and some bananas. All the fruit is optional on how much and what you can add anything really. The next thing is put a lid on the container and put it in the fridge overnight this is important for the oats to soak up. This is after two days and most of it has been eaten, the kids love it. The color is from the blueberries.

Those grease fittings are tapped in at a 45° angle. All my tractors are like that.

Back home from the farm on the other side of the state as we continue to restore the water ways from brush and junk trees that have taken over in the past 30 years. We burned six or so piles and reduced the size of some we had already burned. Quite a job and a dirty one at that. The pond was almost un-approachable due to sprouts and trees--look at it now, just like I remember as a kid and I caught five bass (should have had eight) in thirty minutes. A new electric line is going through the farm and they purchased an easement from us. The other day, my brother who owns the house and a few acres that used to be part of the farm, called and said that trucks were coming in his second driveway and crossing onto the farm. He called the electric company and they said in the contract that, if needed, they had access to more than just the easement right of way. We did find that clause buried deep in the contract and unless you are educated in understanding contract language, you may miss it as we did. When he said that he didn't give them access to cross his property that quickly changed and they build their own ramp from the highway to the easement some 700 feet from his house. He didn't really want cement trucks and heavy equipment within 75 feet of his house coming and going from daylight to dark as it is across the road building the sub station. If you can zoom in on picture you'll see several fires. It was an excellent week to burn, not much wind and we had the disk on the tractor--just in case. The grapple we bought is a HUGE asset in this work.

Get some Miller Tire Paint Jim and paint those tires twice with it. You will be real surprised how much better they look. I had to but two new tire for an RJ rear set I had of old Goodyears. One of the tires has thin skin in one spot that was cracked. Nothing really left worth saving. Miller Tire paint could not take care of that problem!

I got to use the tiller today for a couple of hours. It worked great and has no noise or other issues. The case was cool with no leaks. Hopefully it is good to go for another 30 + years.

I’m with you Jim. That’s why I think I’m just going to bring stuff to sell at the Big Show this year, and not bring any tractors. I just have too much stuff that I know I’ll never use and other people can.

I’m not the original owner. I found a guy a few years ago near Germansville, Pa who did home / estate cleanouts who listed it for sale with a bunch of other stuff including a 520-H. All low hour stuff sitting in a garage for many years. I sold off some stuff but kept the 418-A. I try to put a few hours a year on it to keep it running good. Always use ethanol free gas in all my stuff and it makes a huge difference in performance.

I’ve been looking for a 520HC for about a decade and haven’t found the right fit (price, distance, condition) until recently. My son @Coulter Caleb is purchasing his first house and it has an acre and a half of land in addition to a 125’ driveway. He needed a solid tractor for mowing and blowing. Then this one popped up on the local marketplace. It was owned by one man most of his life until his passing and then was inherited with an estate purchase. It is amazingly clean and original. The wiring is in fairly as produced condition. It ran great when we picked it up but it had several details that needed attention. finding a staple instead of a fuse was more than a little disturbing. this idler pulley was too big and the drive belt too worn and so it slapped on the frame rail making an annoying sound. I also noticed that none of the gauges were working on the dash (long story short, someone installed the wrong key switch). The tach and the rectifier were both toast and after finding some suitable used pieces with the correct key switch we were in business. Tractor was running good, charging good, and driving good 👍. then I pulled the fender pan, changed the rear end fluid/filter installed the rear hitch and cable (he may want to plow with it 🤔) and added the brackets for his bagger. Started the tractor several times to circulate the fluid while raising and lowering the deck. I was getting excited now! beefy looking horse💪🏻 I have never owned one of these (I still don’t technically—it’s Caleb’s) and I am amazed at how heavy duty certain items are! The last thing on my list was changing the oil and filter, then it was time to cut the grass. After the oil was changed, I started the tractor, went to grab something and came back just in time to hear it die😡. It sounded like it ran out of fuel. I checked the petcock and it was on. I started it again, and it ran for three or four seconds and died, then it wouldn’t start. After sitting overnight, I got it to start again but it only ran for about 10 seconds, then died again. Any thoughts on what to check first guys??? I don’t want to go on a wild goose chase. I’ve checked and lubed the 9 pin connector. I have the replacement key switch with good connections and lube. I’m wondering if it is the trigger module but I don’t know how to test that and I don’t want to take the flywheel off unless I have to…

Well…winter storm “Elsa” is over in east central WisCo and she left a mess to clean up. Caleb is busy working and so I went to his house yesterday afternoon and surveyed the “damage”. Easily 12” on the level and several drifts that were in excess of 16”. However, the 520HC and two stage Ber-Vac were up to the task… The driveway looks pretty decent in this picture but as I trudged through the snow up to the house I walked through several drifts up to my knees! Hidalgo started without incident and even though the snow was heavy, and I had to drive slow but steady, the blower was handling the white stuff capably. I stopped midpoint down the driveway to grab this shot to give some perspective of depth. Nothing compared to northeast Wisconsin but the deepest level snowfall I’ve had to clear in a long time. I’m really thankful for this setup for Caleb. It will definitely handle whatever gets thrown at him in the upcoming years. I hope you guys affected by the storm all had “fun” on your tractors and stayed safe!

Thanks Don for the thoughts on the bolt. It was handy (like your avatar) and I’m on a time constraint (I leave for Israel on Monday). This upcoming summer, I’ll get a custom rod made up. Today’s project was to clean up the hood and fender pan, then load the tractor, and head to Caleb’s house. This tractor is in such good shape (the seat notwithstanding) and so I felt that the chalky hood would shine up nicely… I wasn’t wrong…I only spent about 20 minutes on it for now but was excited with the results! Not bad for 37 year old paint! my little 5’x8’ trailer was “just big enough” to fit the tractor with blower attached. Caleb got off work about an hour early so that he could be the one to clear his own driveway for the first time! For those of you that have known him for a decade—can you believe that he is now a first time homeowner??? unfortunately the throttle cable is not functioning well. We are going to need to outsource a good used one or find something better. however, even at about half throttle, that Ber-Vac was handling the snow with ease and the torque of that Onan is impressive! For those of you that enjoyed reading the Iron Horse thread, this picture is also there. This is my dad in 1975 clearing the snow at his first house with his 1965 875. 50 years later, his grandson is clearing his driveway at his first house with a 1988 520HC! Wheel Horse—a generational experience for the Stertz household (like it is for many of you!) Job well done for the old machine! using the bagger frame to hold some weight (about 100 pounds) may not be the prettiest situation, however it works just fine. Caleb has a full rack of suitcase weights but no bracket. I suppose that next spring/summer we can fabricate something to hold those. At least, he can now clear any accumulative snow moving forward this winter…

So let me see if I got this right? i have a K91 with a rope pull start on it. I want to put a Techy recoil pull start on it. So I buy a Techy recoil start and a Techy "short" recoil start cup? do you happen to have a part number for that? Thanks
