13 pointsI decided to give one of these rakes a try to tackle the massive number of limbs and sticks that winter deposited on my property. I (temporarily) modified it to use with a slot hitch. Once I learned to slow down a little bit, the results were decent. I was worried it might destroy my turf, but it seems fine - actually does a little dethatching. Once I get everything windrowed near my large oaks, I'll hook up the Mighty Mac and make some mulch. Then breakout the Cyclone Rake for a vac job. Got about an acre to do. There are also a few limbs that will see a chainsaw and a fire pit.

8 pointsWe are not dealing with a space shuttle here! Wire brush the area, weld it, it's good to go for another 60 years +. 20-30 minutes of work. A restoration, then it would be all a part anyway so the proper way would be to just change the frame. A worker, not so much IMO. But I'm not retired with all the time in the world either so that may play a part in it too. Add a piece of metal over it to brace it if you're worried about the quality of the weld. Personally, I'd just wire brush it off and use a 7018 rod to arc weld it. I'm guessing the original weld wasn't good or complete so it stressed cracked at that weakest point, the top of the hole is the thinnest part to the top. (Built on a Friday evening right before 5 pm. LOL) The heat from the weld would weaken that section of the rail too if the weld wasn't completed. Air bubble in the weld maybe?? The foot peg 3/4 rod was welded on the inside of the frame so a pic of that side would probably show what's actually going on.

6 pointsI’ve had a few foot pegs break away from the frame, never crack like that. I’m sure there are ways to neutralize the acid if you’re concerned, but I’m with ‘Fish here. Drill a 1/8” hole at the end of the crack to prevent it from spreading after the weld. Clean it up, weld it. Back to work we go.

5 pointsFinally decided to check the Model No. on the Raider 12 I bought just before Christmas to see what year it was and the tag says 1-6931 which is a 1968 Raider 9 not a Raider 12. The model number decals on the hood stand were completely faded, the only thing legible was "RAIDER 6-SPEED". Apparently someone replaced the HH100 Tecumseh with a Kohler K301 and to that person I say, ! So, I will have TWO 1968 Raider 9's with 12HP Kohlers when my old one is back together. Yeah, I can live with that.

5 pointsJust grind a 45*vee groove in the crack and wire brush the frame and foot rest rod. Like John said, jack it up under the foot rest rod to close the crack and weld the crack and all around the foot rest rod.

5 pointsIt’s a series 1 19hp, I’d say original. thanks, I agree. I will definitely need a seat pan, I’ll look him up. Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned when I shared the pics that this is going to be mostly restored and put back to work. I’ve got either a KT17 series 2 or a P220 onan that could be used. The series 1 is already out. Im also thinking of stretching a 520 gear reduction steering unit and adapting the greasable tie rods.

5 pointsNot mine, belongs to the neighbor who has a farm. He has a D4 Car dozer with a 6 way blade, a Case 580SK backhoe/extendahoe, a big LS farm tractor with a loader, and numerous other equipment. I can borrow just about anything I need from him. We work together all the time on projects. I can get all the lumber I need from the mill for free too! He has several hundred acres of forest mountain land with more trees than we'll ever need

Red tractor parts drying on living room tables, rugs, chairs and countertops when it's cold or raining outside... Strange people with large trailers dropping off little red tractors, parts, implements at all hours... typically expecting food, adult beverages and occasionally lodging... Washing machines tinted red on the inside from mysterious sources... Immediate need for large storage sheds, barns, trailers and neighboring garages...

4 pointsThere is another difference - the Kohler you tighten & torque the mounting fasteners, The Tecumseh you use wingnuts!! Similar to never putting the hairpin clips back on the hood hinges of a Chevy Vega. You just had a short term relationship with those aluminum 4 Bangers..!

4 pointsHmm, first I've seen that. Yes, it could and should be welded. Pretty easy for that one. Jack it up by that 3/4 foot peg bar and it should close the crack gap. Weld it right to the bar inside and out and the crack too

4 pointsI've built five receiver hitches, most about the same braced down to the transmission The other one other one .is braced off the top of the transmisson. Lot of different way to build a rexeiver hitch . This is one of braces for the hitch on the 520-H

3 pointsOccasionally the onset of the sickness is quick. Sadly there is no cure and the only treatment typically requires additional horse trading. Red paint is very good for alleviating the itch and burning as well.

We are getting them all running (most of them they do not want to repaint they like the old look) and we have a tractor show here in our town the end of May. We've even got the neighbors to let us borrow trailers and trucks to be able to haul them all

3 points@ineedanother not sure unless its the rust/battery corrosion. Just picked the tractor up. Noted the drive belt guard was off with damange and soon saw that crack and put it together. I looked under it and it doesn't appear to be cracked on the other side. Im good with just 60+ years. 😀

3 pointsThe high school robotics team I mentor had our first competition last week. Traveled to Oklahoma on Wednesday, practice on Thursday, Friday and Saturday was competition. Turned out to be more of a 3 day test session for the senior team. We had moments of brilliance, and lots of disappointment. We were finding weak spots in the machine all weekend, and flailing on it in the pits to make corrections/patches/improvements. When it was healthy, it was fantastic - then something new would break. At the end of the qualification matches, we had worked our way up to a ranking of 15. We ended up on the #2 seated alliance in the finals. Didn't make it very far in the double elimination playoffs. Dropped into the lower bracket in the second round, then got eliminated in the 2nd round in the lower bracket - mechanical issues. We did take home the award for the best automous routine. Interesting thing happened. At the time we were ranked something like 35th out of 40 teams, when one of the students from the #1 ranked team came to our pits and asking questions about one of the systems on our robot. Kind of a boost for our students. The Junior team had a better day, ending up being the captain of the #6 seated alliance, making it one round d farther in the playoffs than the senior team. They took home an award for industrial design. Fresh start today with some major changes in the works for the next competition next week in Arkansas.

3 pointsI have heard of the 520's cracking there from the weight of the 60" deck but have never seen it. It is a weaker point with the footrest cutout there. I don't see any reason that could not be ground and welded.

2 points@ebinmaine @Bar Nuthin I’ve been losing snow steadily over the last few days up here. I’m about 3 hours north from EB. Today being 70 really made it recede. It is still far too wet and cold to do much between the ice and pockets of snow. I have no big trees so I’ve got bare ground everywhere. I did get a bunch of outdoor stuff done today though. The snow here is bear toe deep and probably ankle to shin deep to normal people😁

2 pointsWelcome! One of the big advantages of owning Wheel Horse tractors is also at times a curse. That is the free interchangability of so many major components over a decade or more. You may have one or more "Franken Horses" where failed components - engines, transmissions, steering wheels and such got replaced with servicable parts that fit and are not true to the tractor serial number.

2 pointsOK - you have a lot going on there. Are both sides cracked in the same place?? If so, it must ride like a hobby-horse with the frame flexing. Flexing - did the frame take a permanent set, dipping downward - on both sides?? If it is all in the affirmative for my questions - game over. Find a good donor frame. Sounds extreme?? Here's why. There is severe acid corrosion on the frame and in thru the crack. You cannot weld over that - the surface must have all that removed, and the crack Vee gouged out. That requires stripping the tractor to the bare frame. Then the forces that caused the crack need to be spread over a longer area - that requires either a plate or other angle to be inside the frame with the frame inverted and clamped down on a stout welding table.. Short version- - can it be done to properly fix the frame, yes. Is it worth going thru all that, probably no. I agree with the others that if all you want is a short term "field fix", then even the easy way out is not easy. My 3 cents...

2 pointsSerial numbers were more or less randomly assigned over the years. For the units that you know the model number or name of you can click on "Browse" then "Manuals" and you will se a grouping of tractors by years. You can click on the age range you are interested in and then the model you have. The model opening page will have a list of serial numbers for that model. Hope this helps.
