Well, I’m almost done with this one been working on this four a few years now it was very rough when I got it, but slowly I’m going through it. All I have now is the throttle control is not working, but Walfish straighten me out on that. I will reset everything again tomorrow And I even got the belt to work now. I just think I had to be run for a while. It was kinda tight when I put it on there, but I had to put a 2 x 4 on the clutch brake works good now as a belt wears in I should be able to ajust everything where I don’t need the block anymore at least it works. She’s not pretty, but good enough to beat around the yard and take it up the street with a cold one. Hope you enjoy the pictures and the one video. IMG_0596.mov

glyptol is an insulating paint. typically used on machine cases to inhibit rust, stop porosity and aid in oil circulation. it goes on thick and fills in tiny voids etc

The impellers in most marine engine pumps are made from a flexible plastic or rubber as the vanes must flex as the impeller rotates in the excentric housing. Most of the failures are caused by overheating that causes the rubber impeller to become brittle resulting in the fingers breaking off. Overheating is caused by lack of water caused by a plastic bag over the intake, the engine tilted up too high, mud in the intake, and engines left running after the loaded boat is pulled out of the water. I don't start my engines during long term storage as the fuel system is drained and the cylinders have been fogged. But I do have the muffs and water on and turn the engines over monthly to flex the impeller fingers to prevent them from taking a permanent set.

My contribution for today is I’ve been working on the C-141 over the last few days. I painted the upper dash and shift plate. The shift plate got modified more to be able to engage the parking brake. I touched up the red on the engine and painted the air cleaner. I also started to figure out handles for the brake and throttle. I also worked a bit more on my emblem for my hat project. The next thing is I’ve got to extend out the exhaust at least an 1 1/2 or more as it hits the hood. Then put the hood back on and wire the headlights. Overall painting will be sometime after that.

I'm a bit like a hit and miss engine myself. When placed under a load I will do my best to accomplish the task at hand, when idling around I may let out a little poooof now and then.

It should be pulling the throttle. First, the governor must be set properly according to the manual. Then the adjustment on cable conduit near the governor connection must be made. Loosen the cable clamp holding the conduit. With the engine running and the throttle knob set to full throttle, pull the conduit through the cable clamp until the engine is at full throttle and 3600 RPM is achieved. Lock the clamp. Push the knob in and it should go to idle.

At the Zagray Farm Museum in CT, they have a bunch on permanent display and at their spring, summer, and fall shows, members bring at least 50 more to show off. The biggest one used to power a city electric generating station! Hearing so many running at the same time is like an orchestra playing a symphony without a conductor.

@HyperPete My condolences to you and your wife. It’s probably been said in this thread before but I’m going to say it again. Dogs will give you some of the happiest days of your life and one of the saddest days of your life. After my last dog died I didn’t want another dog. I was so emotionally exhausted I became physically exhausted as well. Even had to take off work. About 9 months later my wife and daughter wanted me to go “Look” at a Springer Spaniel puppy, well I’m sure you know how that went. Now I have a new best friend! Her name is Lucy! RIP to your Lucy Pete

" Power on both sides of solenoid" I'm assuming you hear a click from the solenoid when in the start position. If so, could be a bad starter but "cents" you restored the tractor I'm betting you painted the engine and where the starter bolts on and the ground cable connects, you need to clean off the paint at these locations to establish grounds.

I've had a hankerin' to see the set of wiiide front tires on this beast but they just didn't quite do it for me. Well I have a set of 5 x 4.5 narrow wheels with tri ribs. Those look good! This evening I got the test fitted hubs and wheel spacers back off. Removed the dry fitted LH spindle. Got some grease in both spindles and installed them. I also used a tool I don't recall getting but it's super handy. A Bearing Packer. Also, I did some poking around here on the site because I should get new tie rods. I found an old post showing that I'll need to build some heim joint rods. The stock C160-8 steering plate won't clear the 520H tie rods. I'll check the threads another day and order from McMaster Carr. May have been @JAinVA that had that info years ago...

You may have some air trapped in the fuel line that the fuel pump can't move. Use a step by step process starting at the gas tank, close the shut off valve and remove the fuel line to see if fuel will flow from the tank when the valve is reopened. Attach the hose and move to the engine end, remove the hose from the fuel pump and lower it into a container to verify that fuel is flowing to the pump. Presuming fuel can make it to the pump remove the pump's outlet hose and turn over the engine to be surer the pump is functioning properly. If the pump isn't working look closely at the connections, there is an INLET and an OUTLET on the pump.

Got a couple of tractors ready for the Steam Pageant in a couple of weeks. Dusted off and fueled up the 953 and changed out the break in oil on HHHOOOWWWAAARRRDDD!!! Got a couple of mowing sessions before I get the 875 and C 160 ready.

Funny thing. When making arrangements for storage last fall, while talking about oil changes on the engine and lower unit, I did ask about the impeller. He stated that it was probably OK since the newer impellers last longer now. Guess I get to tell him 'I told you so' this year.

Communication in the Internet Age now goes far beyond pressing send on a simple text message. Check your social media feeds or text messages… how many smiley faces, flying hearts, avocados, and unicorns do you see? These iconic little Japanese images, known as emoji, are more popular on the internet today than ever before—so naturally, they have their own special day. Recognized on July 17, World Emoji Day is a holiday that validates our obsession over these ubiquitous graphic icons. While sometimes they may seem silly, according to various psychologists and researchers, they may play a vital role in the way we communicate today. In fact, Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2015 was the “😂” emoji. Light up your friends’ phones with all the emojis you want today — it’s a healthy obsession. 😉

As hard as this was, it was harder to watch her suffer. Yes, we are heartbroken, but i know there is another dog out there who needs to be rescued. In time, we will find him or her. 7 years ago, in July, I lost my golden retriever Sierra. She had been with me through divorce and years of bachelorhood. Cancer took her too early, and after a badly botched euthanasia I was devastated. I too swore i would never own another dog, and for 2 or 3 years I didn't. Then Lucy came along, abused & frightened. Donna & I rescued her, and she rescued me. I'm missing her badly right now.

I got it working with a old choke linkage rod that I had. I did see where small engine parts has one that is properly bent. Someone asked if the carburetor came with a different choke rod, but no it didn't. I just swapped the one off my old carburetor so that it wouldn't hit the air filter plate. It's pretty tricky to swap the bar because there is a tiny spring and a small ball bearing that have to be swapped out too. Gary

So I did some more research. And on these series 15 pumps on the charge pump there is a pin that drives the gear, and those are known to break. I do not have to pull the hydro off the tractor to access that charge pump, I will have to pull the tiller off as there is a pulley blocking the charge pump.

Lots of the heavier hydros have a charge pump used for a lift and to replace fluid in the motion circuit that seeps into the sump during normal operation. Hydros also need a way to prevent a pushed tractor from having the hydro “motor” drive the hydro “pump” and break trying to turn the engine! The WH Sunstrands have the bypass valve, the WH Eaton 1100s have internal “acceleration valves” that do the job AT VERY LOW SPEEDS. (Note the Eaton 700s have no bypass provision-hence they should never get pushed!)

Apparently, when a fellow reaches a certain age, he is prone to fail in zipping his zipper. I've reached that age and my wife is quick to point it out. I just tell her "I'm air cooled." In another topic was hit and miss engines. They are almost memorizing watching and listening to them run.

Thats what I was looking for. Got the new one on and working good, At first it was binding so I put a little more angle on my z bend and that took care of the problem.

If I had a dollar for every boat water pump impeller I sold at Napa I could buy @Jrblanke a half dozen Shoo Fly pies!

Seeing so much material no longer attached to the impeller makes me wonder where that material ended up!

In order to fit the mechanicals into the small space on the tractor, WH decided to use the “retract” motion of the cylinder rod for the “heavy” lift. This puts more fluid pressure on the rod end of the cylinder and works that O-ring seal harder.

@ebinmaine That’s temporary just to keep it from falling on the solenoid. I plan on getting a legit one soon. @SylvanLakeWH Whatever works, I think I have one of those kicking around here somewhere. 😄

Bad ground is my first thought too.

Is there a need for a sacrificial part? A weak Link in the chain? If the gear rotor was made out of a harder material would the housing become the damaged piece?
  36. 2 points
Good catch... he definitely needs a black rubber tie down (like mine...)

Remind me sometime to look for a proper battery hold down for that. You get to jouncing around much and that could be dangerous.

rescued an abandoned C165-8 tractor with gear tranny that had sat outside for few years and had bad shift boot - - took me 3 kerosene flushes before i finally got clear waste pan fluid -- then put in the new gear oil -- Not sure what the inside of tranny looked like before or after flushes -- but at least the last drips or flush finally was clear -- here is what some of the first two flushes looked like -- ugh !!

I pulled the pontoon as close to land as I could get it and dug into the water pump replacement. It went pretty much as advertised, even though I was working in the water. Here is what I found: Which impeller is new, an which is old? Anyone? Anyone? This job would be a lot easier with the boat on the trailer and out of the water. I think maybe, this should be a PM job every 4 seasons or so.

Hmmm. I think that the communitive property does not apply to this here equation. I doubt that: rust = bearings - bad, or bearings = bad - rust
