Today I got my Work Horse ready for the Big Show!

Our 312-H was a bear to steer. The smaller-statured operators in the family complained effectively so, to address the issue, we: thanked @ri702bill for milling the bottoms of the axles at the spindle holes to make them flat and shorten them to compensate for... spindle thrust bearing bearings like on the later 520’s while doing this we discovered that the arm on one of the spindles was bent so we re-aligned it then installed adjustable tie rods to tweak the toe-in checked and lubed all the steering mechanism (if there hadn’t already been a flange bearing at the forward end of the lower steering shaft, I’d have added one) It now steers and tracks very nicely according to all users!

My 416-H steered fairly hard and aways felt like it was fighting me to stay straight. Then I checked and adjusted the toe-in. I found that a 1/8" toe-in can make all the difference. Just a thought.

When you get things apart maybe you'll find the upper steering shaft bearing is the issue instead of the lower linkage.

There is a shim pack on the lower steering shaft between the fan gear and the lower steering block. The shim pack thickness sets the tooth engagement depth. Perhaps it is setting the engagement deeper than the other?? One way to "see" the engagement is to coat 4 or 5 of the fan gear teeth with fresh grease and turn the wheel to run it thru to the other side. Do both tractors. Do the squished out grease patterns look the same?? One deeper than the other??

Finished loading for the Show then cleaned the barn while all the buckets are on the trailer. Now relaximng and watching my neighbor work his corn.

Today I marked out and cut the slots for the throttle and choke on the upper dash of the C-141. I have one side pretty close to done. But I still need to tweak the other side. I also ran the choke to the engine which still needs to be tweaked as well.

Some of us are on the lookout for cool ideas. Some of us are glad for the chance to witness and appreciate the talent and artistry that goes into making cool stuff. What caught my eye was the hydraulic drive motors on the rear and the realization (having never heard of or seen a CADtrac before) that it was likely 4WD and articulated.

Did some organizing in the barn since it getting a bit too crazy down there just with parts and implements and just stuff everywhere. Did some weeding in the garden and some rototilling with the C-145. Then moved ALOT of stuff out of the way to get the 3 point cultivator hooked up ti grandpas 8n since we sold it and it’s just much easier loading something like that onto a trailer with it hooked up to the tractor. Then organized and went through all the stuff we took out and now have some more room in the barn so it’s not jammed packed.

Soak overnight in kerosene, then hold a lit match under it in the morning - PRESTO, stain gone.

I'm watching the Army 250 Parade on Fox News currently, you might want to try finding it on other networks if you can.

If you can successfully start/run using the jumpers from battery to switch, that leaves two possible sources of the problem: 1. the switch itself is no good. Get out your test meter and confirm that conductivity/non-conductivity is correct among the various terminals (this varies by switch model so you need your wiring diagram in the user manual). 2. There is no power getting to the switch. Start at the B connection on the switch and work backwards toward the regulator and the engine looking for (and resolving) any bad connections. You’ll likely encounter a fuse along the way--be sure it’s good and its socket is clean.

The narrow Jerry cans, I think, would tend to tip over in the bed of your truck unless somehow supported. The thing I do like about the Eagle can is it wide, round base, no tipping.

I have one of those welders from HF. I welded a patch in my truck frame, wasnt pretty. I got in touch with a friend that welds for a living, and has welded for me before. Said $20.He is good and cheap, plus owes me a favor or two which helps.

To digress a tad off topic, but as a former Front End Technician.. I will. I saw a fantastic attempt to "correct" a severe toe-out condition on a NASCAR Racecar back in the day. Rusty Wallace was not only a good driver, but had excellent knowledge of the cars components and how each affected the overall handling. It was at Martinsville VA, I recall. Rusty was running third late in the race when he got collected in an accident that severely toed the left front out about 4 to 5 inches as the steering was bent. He radioed the pit crew to stage a pitstop, but as he approached, they all jumped back behind the wall when he came in at speed, spanked the inner wall hard and drove back onto the track. He did so as to not loose his third position in the field!!! "We'll change the tires next lap - that left front has served its purpose". His "adjustment" had re-bent the geometry back enough to make the car driveable to finish the race..... and not loose laps in the pits.

If someone tighten to gears too mich It will make it steer hard, 1" to 1 1/2" play steering is normal. The hole that uppper bushing is in wears and the steering wheel can move around I install the 6472 flange bearing up there Typical problem with my 300's. A nother problem is 2 ply tires ,unless you have them pumped up untill they round up in the center, they will fold up if you run over anything bigger then a match stick. Alinement and heims joints on the tie rods also helps with easer steering,

Yep, nationally there are several grades of PT but in our area the big box places stock only “severe weather” and “ground contact”. The yard that’s been catering to builders for the last 100 years will order anything you want, though (and they’ll help you decide). Note that lots of PT lumber is not suitable for any structural purposes. I got grief from the building inspector when I laid my deck boards at an angle to the supporting joists which made the spans longer than 16 inches. I had to show him the specs for the deck-specific stuff I was using to prove that it met the code requirements.

Several weeks ago I picked up this park bench project for $5 at the auction. My SIL saw it and said " I wish I had one". Well, last week I got another one for $5. I had to make all new slats and got it finished today. I'll deliver it Saturday for her 50th anniversary.
