Today I got my Work Horse ready for the Big Show!

Our 312-H was a bear to steer. The smaller-statured operators in the family complained effectively so, to address the issue, we: thanked @ri702bill for milling the bottoms of the axles at the spindle holes to make them flat and shorten them to compensate for... spindle thrust bearing bearings like on the later 520’s while doing this we discovered that the arm on one of the spindles was bent so we re-aligned it then installed adjustable tie rods to tweak the toe-in checked and lubed all the steering mechanism (if there hadn’t already been a flange bearing at the forward end of the lower steering shaft, I’d have added one) It now steers and tracks very nicely according to all users!

My 416-H steered fairly hard and aways felt like it was fighting me to stay straight. Then I checked and adjusted the toe-in. I found that a 1/8" toe-in can make all the difference. Just a thought.

When you get things apart maybe you'll find the upper steering shaft bearing is the issue instead of the lower linkage.

There is a shim pack on the lower steering shaft between the fan gear and the lower steering block. The shim pack thickness sets the tooth engagement depth. Perhaps it is setting the engagement deeper than the other?? One way to "see" the engagement is to coat 4 or 5 of the fan gear teeth with fresh grease and turn the wheel to run it thru to the other side. Do both tractors. Do the squished out grease patterns look the same?? One deeper than the other??

Finished loading for the Show then cleaned the barn while all the buckets are on the trailer. Now relaximng and watching my neighbor work his corn.

Today I marked out and cut the slots for the throttle and choke on the upper dash of the C-141. I have one side pretty close to done. But I still need to tweak the other side. I also ran the choke to the engine which still needs to be tweaked as well.

Some of us are on the lookout for cool ideas. Some of us are glad for the chance to witness and appreciate the talent and artistry that goes into making cool stuff. What caught my eye was the hydraulic drive motors on the rear and the realization (having never heard of or seen a CADtrac before) that it was likely 4WD and articulated.

The 300 400, and 500 series 8 speed tractors used the standard cable with the short clevis,. The long clevis is for Eaton Hydros and uses the same cable.

Did some organizing in the barn since it getting a bit too crazy down there just with parts and implements and just stuff everywhere. Did some weeding in the garden and some rototilling with the C-145. Then moved ALOT of stuff out of the way to get the 3 point cultivator hooked up ti grandpas 8n since we sold it and it’s just much easier loading something like that onto a trailer with it hooked up to the tractor. Then organized and went through all the stuff we took out and now have some more room in the barn so it’s not jammed packed.

Soak overnight in kerosene, then hold a lit match under it in the morning - PRESTO, stain gone.

I'm watching the Army 250 Parade on Fox News currently, you might want to try finding it on other networks if you can.

If you can successfully start/run using the jumpers from battery to switch, that leaves two possible sources of the problem: 1. the switch itself is no good. Get out your test meter and confirm that conductivity/non-conductivity is correct among the various terminals (this varies by switch model so you need your wiring diagram in the user manual). 2. There is no power getting to the switch. Start at the B connection on the switch and work backwards toward the regulator and the engine looking for (and resolving) any bad connections. You’ll likely encounter a fuse along the way--be sure it’s good and its socket is clean.

The narrow Jerry cans, I think, would tend to tip over in the bed of your truck unless somehow supported. The thing I do like about the Eagle can is it wide, round base, no tipping.

I have one of those welders from HF. I welded a patch in my truck frame, wasnt pretty. I got in touch with a friend that welds for a living, and has welded for me before. Said $20.He is good and cheap, plus owes me a favor or two which helps.

I have 2 almost identical tractors, 1995 416-8 and 1994 416-H. They have identical tires and both with 42” RD decks. The hydro steering is almost effortless, but the 8-speed takes some effort. Tires are inflated to 12 lbs on both, on the 8-speed I jacked up the front, removed the spindles cleaned and regreased, greased the fan gear and sprayed lithium grease in the flange bearing. Gotta be missing something, the 8-speed has to turn better. Thoughts / suggestions?

Pull the valves and do a proper valve job, lapping is shortcut to do a less than ideal repair.

Well, I think you found your problem being hard to start. Low RPM = low compression but might run okay at working speeds. I'm not a big fan of lapping old valves but depending on the condition of the seat and face, there could be some benefit. I would probably just clean everything up, adjust the lash, check the head for flatness and get it put back together but I'm no expert with engines so others might have more reliable advice.

Oh yeah, I did forget that little item! The gumball was found under the left belt cover, with an obvious indentation from going through something. I ended up replacing all the parts except the idler pulley of the deck belt tensioner. I had replaced the idler one or two mowing seasons ago.

It was a fantastic event i will never forget - and plan to do it again ! Meet a lot of Friendly Guy‘s -more than i can count here -i knew from the Forum, some friendships was taken and other more established. Food and drink is enough arround the Show, and there is even a Campground or if you booked early enough, there are few hotels surrounding. My biggest problem was there where a lot of possible Deals, but how to get all that stuff over the Big Pond. that is much more expensive than the Parts.... 😎 Two hearts beating in my chest for that deals.... little evil said: “yes do it“ but the little Angel reminds me on my restricted Weight i can carry with me. 200$ on top only for overweight for the Luggage was enough 😂😂😂 but it was worth each penny i spent for ❤️ I thinkered about buy me another Tracta, luckily my luggage not big enough. don‘t know if ya hear it allready but Wheelhorses tent to herd ! My personal experience about the Big Show is, it is definitely worth the Way 👍 even for me because i must fly over the Big Pond.
