For National Medal of Honor Day on March 25, we honor the valor that the most courageous servicemen and servicewomen in the United States military have displayed. Awarded by the President of the United States, only military members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty will receive this distinction. There are actually three different versions of the Medal of Honor, for the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force, though Coast Guard members and Marines are also eligible to earn the Navy version. To date, there have been 3,468 Medals of Honor awarded to those who fight to keep our country safe – and today is the day to honor their exemplary service. Going above and beyond the call of duty in the military deserves all the awards we can bestow. After all, it’s these brave people who secured and still protect the freedoms we uniquely enjoy in this country, something we often take for granted. Today, we’ll look at the history of the award to better honor those who earn it. Though the first request for a medal of valor was submitted in 1861, at the onset of the civil war, the general-in-chief rejected the proposal on the basis that a medal of valor simply sounded too European. It wasn’t until after he retired in late 1861 that the General of the Navy adopted the idea for his branch, and the Navy soon after ordered nearly 200 medals from the US Mint in Philadelphia. After Lincoln approved a US Navy Medal of Valor in December of 1861, the US Army Medal of Honor was approved less than a year later. It was in 1863, during the Civil War, that the first Medal of Honor was given. A Union raiding party had recently destroyed Confederate railways and important transportation in Tennessee and Georgia – these six men became the first recipients of the award. During the course of the Civil War, 40% of the Medals of Honor that have been given up until now were distributed. During this time, the first Black recipients of the Medal of Honor were designated; sixteen Navy and sixteen Army soldiers were honored for their bravery during the Civil War. The only woman ever awarded the Medal of Honor was Mary Edwards Walker, who served during the Civil War as a surgeon in the Army. The Army Medal went through a redesign process in 1904 but otherwise has remained largely unchanged for the majority of its existence. In 1917, 911 recipients, including Buffalo Bill, had their medals rescinded, as they were awarded inappropriately. In 1977, an investigation of this act began, and the medal was restored to Buffalo Bill and 4 other civilian scouts in 1989.

Finally got a-round-tuit and fixed the oil leak on my 416H. The oil drain tube elbow has been loose for, I don’t know 28 years or so, and finally got it tightened up. Had to loosen up the engine and turn it slightly to get the pipe elbow tightened, but finally…. Got-er-done! Then changed the oil, filter, greased all the fittings and sharpened the blades.

Just got in from shopping for food. As i was driving back I was cut up by a very young sheep wearing a two piece swimsuit and driving a mean looking sports car. Bloody Lambikini ......

Started getting one of the C-81's ready for @Pullstart's plowday. Dropped the deck, changed the oil, & greased all the fittings. Gear oil checked, just changed last summer, no moisture. While switching out hitches I found a leaking axle seal & loose hub. I'll fix both tomorrow after work.

Soooooo...... I've spent the last 6 days either driving, in hospitals, or taking care of my stepson. He was in KY rock climbing with his college's climbing club, had an unfortunate fall last Wednesday that normally might only result in some bruises at worst, but landed short on a rock ledge and basically destroyed his ankle. I drove from IN to KY Thursday AM, picked him up, drove to NJ, spent the night at my brother's, then drove to Boston Friday morning to get him to an orthopedic surgeon for a 10:45am appointment. X-rays, CT, determined that some pretty intense surgery would be needed to reconstruct the ankle. Surgery was scheduled for today. Yesterday he started having pain in his calf, which could have been related to blood clots, not worth taking a chance. So we spent the whole night in the ER, end result = no blood clots, then had to drive an hour this morning for a 6:00am surgery check-in. Surgery took about 3 hours, now he has some cadaver bone parts mixed in with his own . Doctor said he was pleased with how it went, but it will be a challenging rehab. Not sure how much longer I'll be staying here.

K181s all nice a pretty. Rebuilt and going back in the B-80 this weekend. I still need to make sure my mower deck is working properly after taking it completely apart and painting it.

I trimmed 22” off the beam, and got to work adapting.

I bought the broach set several years ago and have rehabbed several hubs. I am not a machinist or metal worker. I did find that for me it easier to drill and tap the new set screw hole first then line the broach up with it.

New seal in, everything cleaned up nice. Axle, hub, keyway, setscrew & captive nut were like new, (got lucky, plenty of gearlube preservitive,lol).

I don't mind some snow but I'm getting sick of seeing it so often. I don't mind the cold temperatures all the way down to about 15° or so. What affects me is the shortness of the days and lack of concentration in the Sun. I have to be very conscientious about remembering to take my vitamin D during the 6 months of the year we refer to as winter.

Hello wheel horse friends! I'm hoping this can be helpful. I just recently ordered a boat load of hardware for my Raider 12. I think this should apply to a lot of 70’s tractors, but you guys would know better than I. I included my chicken scratch handwritten list which is organized by different sections of the tractor with quantities for that section. Not every area of the tractor is included because I only did certain sections I’m getting ready to reassemble. This list might come in handy when trying to determine what size bolts go where. The parenthesis are total quantities that the manual calls for for the entire tractor, which I’m pretty sure I ordered for all sizes. I included the bolt depot order ($36 shipped) with the part numbers as well as all the wheel horse numbers I was still able to order from toro direct ($95 shipped). There may be a less expensive source for some of these items, but I can no longer shop with WH parts and more due to terrible customer service (which I tried very hard to peacefully resolve) and I also found it easier to just get the exact right parts without having to do any figuring out ..front axle pin, steering shaft bearing, various washers, e clips, 45 degree grease fitting, etc). maybe someone could pick up the baton and complete the list or I can do it myself once I get to that point on my tractor. If there are any office type people among us maybe they would be able to make a document that can be downloaded or something like that. Hope this helps on the quest for bolt kits!

Absolutely... A press is required but you know that. I got my set in the jungle. It is a complete set but a guy could get by with just the 1" & 1/18 bushings & broach for hubs. I think I only needed anything else but once. Cheaper sets are good nuff for hobby work.

So it is that time of the year when the weather breaks and spring has sprung. We are all getting ready for the 2025 big show. We will use this thread so post our buy/sell/trade items only please. I laid all the drain pipes for the new apartment out on the counter so I can get my head wrapped around the system. Should be all up n running sometime Thursday or Friday depending on how much help we get with the actual moving day. That's Thursday.

1) Finished evaluating the Troy Bilt tiller. I'm returning it. 2) Got some wiring done in the shop to power on the attic & back section lights. My 8 gauge romex & 220v outlets arrived today, I hope to get them run & connected tomorrow so I can use my welder.

How about a local Tech School? On the powder coating, there's a couple here in Southern Maine. I have no notions of pricing but could ask.

Around here, the cost for powder coating has soared in recent years. The curing chambers usually are electrically heated - be prepared to spend hundreds of dollars for that....

You'll have to remove the parts you want painted and just ask around. On a previous resto- I painted everything but the hood, fenders, and belt guard and asked a local shop to shoot those for me. I also supplied the paint. But I know the guy in this case. Very few shops will want such a small job. You might find someone if you ask around.

I'm gonna get one of those facet's to put on my C-161. It has a hard time getting fuel from the tank to start up when it's been sitting for a while and cranks and cranks. An electric fuel pump should remedy that.

I don't think I have to heart to Pullstartasize my tractors, no offense to pullstart he has some cool machines, just not my style lol. There isn't much of an update on the 1267 it just recently got brought out of winter storage and has been left original. I did end up having to do a valve job on it. It had a burned exhaust valve. When I'd run it for a while and get it warm it would run terrible so I changed the coil. That didn't fix it so I did new valves and that fixed the issue. I did a new key switch and put the correct hood ornament on it as well. As for the old lady, I hope she isn't knocked up lol I could always use some money. Won't be coming west for plow day but hopefully some time this year! Been dealing with sciatica so I gotta get that straightened out before I can sit in the truck that long, but if you want the 854 I bet I could get a ride for it to go back west!

James got to go home today but he has a long way to go. He is to keep his foot elevated and walking to a minimum (bathroom, refrigerator, to the car for Dr. Appt.) He can walk with a special shoe but the surgeon wants him to use crutches or a knee scooter. He will still be on antibiotics and the wound vac for a few weeks and will have a few more surgeries.

I had 2 of them. Sold one with a tractor. The other one was longer.

What size? Side or rear discharge? I have this deck. It's a 2006, 78345 42" SD. It was purchased new by a school district in northern Virginia. It was apparently never used. I got it in 2019 and used it two seasons. It just needs a little cleaning. This should attach right up to your 418-8. If you are interested, I'll bring it to the show. Picture when I got it. Now Deck is sold.

Having done this before I can tell you that it’s a pretty simple process. If you’re going to replace the gasket and you have it apart you might as well replace the seals on the tine shaft. The gasket and seal kit is available through Wheel Horse Parts and More. The hardest part may be getting the tines off of the shafts. I fought with mine and ended up heating them up with a torch where they slid onto the shafts then IMMEDIATELY putting it to work in hard ground. That was the only way I could get them to break free of the shafts. If you don’t have a torch I’d try removing the bolts that hold the tines on and then using it for a while to break them free.There’s really not that lot going on in the gear box, so taking it apart and laying out the pieces step by step is easy. If you can post pictures of your tiller we can help you figure out what kit you need and probably get you the schematic for it.

I don't even plan to cut with it. I just wanted to have it to go with the tractor if I ever sell it. That will cost more than I want to put into this thing; I only paid 300 for it. Maybe I'll just look for the pulleys I need instead. Thank you, though!

@Ed Kennell I had that same reaction too. It was 60 less than a week ago. At that time I was ready for Spring.

My son-in-law dropped this off today. It was his grandfather's. It was loaned to someone who said the carb fell off while tilling, and he couldn't find it. If I can't fix it, it's off the the scrap yard. 1st step, id the carb. Maybe I have one in the shop.

Knowing what little bit I do about the making of seats - The vinyl is heated and then draped over a mold that has pinholes in it. A vacuum is created to pull the vinyl down into the mold in order to form it. A precise amount of liquid foam is then poured into the mold and another mold is placed over the top of the first mold to form the back side of the foam. After the liquid has expanded the 2 molds are separated. The finished vinyl / foam piece is then stretched over the backing plate. Glue is then used to fasten the edges of the vinyl to the backing plate. Sometimes a trim lock is also placed around the edge of the backing plate for a nicer finish.
