There has been a hole in my heart and life since my beloved pooch Bryant died suddenly last Sept. My wife talked me into adopting another dog to keep our coonhound Bella company. So last week we went to the shelter and met a dog with the same pink nose that Bryant had. Faith is about a year old and has a lot to learn but she's off to a good start already.

Last year I decided to try duals on one of my modified machines. Quickly grew tired of it and went back to singles today. Was going to just remove the outer wheels but didn’t like the look of the single 6x12 either. Had an old pair of 23x8.5’s in the shed that look better in my opinion. She’s a 657 with a Kohler Magnum 8HP pull-start.

Sorry for your loss Mike. I remember meeting him at the 2018 WHCC show. He was a great guy for sure.

Howard Dellapuca and I spoke on the phone for an hour yesterday! We covered the earth on topics but all close to Wheel Horse! Howard asked me if I was ready for the coming storm projected for this weekend. I have my RJ with plow and had it ready in Early November. But Howard got me spooked so I had to put a plow on my B-80. Better safe than sorry Howard!

I've been so busy working on other things and running around that my garage is empty.....zero tractor related projects in the garage at the moment. So the last few times I've been out there, organizations and clean up has been what I've been up to. I got a tool chest from the in laws for Christmas so I've been putting my "good" tools in that and then I picked up a tool set from hobo freight for mobile repairs and shows. Yea it's cheap stuff, but if the guy on Vice Grip Garage can get a car running that's been sitting in the weeds for 15 years with it, I can mess with a few tractors with it that aren't that bad. I do need to lift the engine out of my C-161 and do motor mounts, and I have a Ford 100 garden tractor that needs the peerless tranny split and the detente springs replaced so I better get a move on before the warm weather gets here! So post up your wintertime projects! Weather it's tractor related, automotive, wood working, or home repair, let's see what you're up to!!

My tractor (I'm naming, Sanford) is a self-perpetuating project all unto itself. Every day it reveals something new that needs attention.

So sorry Mike. Still missing Jay and now Jim. Red Square will never be the same without the Waldo / Sqounk banter.

My fondest memory of Jim was not trying to find him at the show and the whole "Where's Waldo " but the following year and trying to find the BBQ joint in Chambersburg. He was really looking forward to it. I thought I knew where it was. I looked at a map before I left to go to PA but I had it upside down! We traveled down Rt. 30. and it's strip mall after strip mall. Looking for the address number. Well we keep driving and now we are in downtown. Jim's like "DO YOU KNOW WHERE THIS PLACE IS?" We keep driving and driving. Finally I give up and call the restaurant. Put the phone on speaker and this girl working there can't tell us how to get there! She says " We are right across from the Dollar General. " I'm like "what Dollar General?" She responded " " I don't know! Keep driving until you see one! " Jim is in stiches! 2 years ago we are driving in separate vehicles. And the BBQ is gone! @rjg854 and I return to the Chambersburg diner to eat. No sign of Jim. Turned out he stopped at a Sheetz gas station and got a day old sandwich. I have been razzing him about that ever since.

Fruitcake Toss Day is on January 3. On this day, take that fruitcake you never got around to eating and send it spiraling hundreds or thousands of feet into the air, depending on the power of your throwing arm. Every year, a few hundred people gather in downtown Manitou Springs, Colorado, to hurl hundreds of fruitcakes into the air by hand, cannon, or slingshot. Fruitcakes last for ages, so don’t throw out that fruitcake we both know no one in your home will eat; throw it into the air!

Will be preparing for my winter resto the next couple weekends. Upgrading air power with my new compressor. This bad boy has a 14hp Kohler with the air delivery of 18.5CFM @175psi, 24.4CFM @ 90psi. The gas engine means that this compressor can not reside inside the shop. Tomorrow will be spent setting up an enclosure and plumbing lines into the shop.

Terry's trading card reminded me of this... 2018 BS Dan and I were hanging out at Sqounkies corner on turn one with him and RJG and I was eyeballing a tractor that was for sale. I was gonna go dicker with the seller and I says Jimbo lemme rub your rub your belly for good luck and a good price. He looks at me funny and I explained to him well in Wisconsin we rub Bucky's belly for good luck when the Badgers play... It's only weird if it don't work. He stuck out his belly some more and I give it a good rub. I didn't get the tractor it was already sold! I these pics from Sqonky & Dino & 953nut .for my BS album ... Can you use this one @Ed Kennell? i told him he could sit in my Packer chair but don't $h1t in it ... do that in the one I gave to Squonk ...

Like I said @Rp.wh is most times useless but does has a knack for finding tractors... I recently acquired three of them ... all 702s. They been POed and molested heavy but most nothing that can't be reversed with a little elbow grease and a bucket of paint and a brush. A sneak preview of all three. Why do they always look better in pictures?!?!? 702 # 1 Yeah she seen better times but mostly there. Not exactly a roller ... frozen water and transmissions don't play together well but a hour in the shop and was draining. Water and oil were still separated so that's good thing. Gotta like the steering wheel! Nice ... A for effort I guess From the we've see it all files ... @Ed Kennell you still got your front tiller ? I think this guy was setting up for it. Joking aside guy has gotta wonder what he may have been trying to turn in 1968 . Is it my eyes or the pic but does that block look blue?? Didn't notice 'till now but find out tomorrow for sure. A sno blower perhaps??? Actually this is some kind of pull switch just hanging out! The good news ... The shoes look really good fronts look to be orginal Generals widely used in the day and hard to find now. Rears don't appear to be cracked or bulging out anywhere. They'll get aired up abit tomorrow to see. The rubber should be able to be saved. Like any good show and to keep you guys in suspense ... to be continued ... Stay tuned for for tomorrow's episode featuring 702 # 2 !

It’s with regret that we lost long time member “Elcamino”. Jim was a very kind man and loved tinkering with his old cars and Wheel Horses. He passed on December 31, 2024. He will be missed.

Last week I noticed a Craigslist ad for “old lawn and garden tractors”. The ad pictured a couple views of a boneyard but there were at least two Wheel Horses. Nothing that tickled my fancy and I’d just resolved not to start any new projects I’m unlikely to finish. (Someone else on the forum noticed the ad and posted it here but I think it got admin removed). Today, though, I got to thinking that maybe there was something there of value I could help someone else put to use so I decided to take one for the team and drive 45 minutes each way to look it over. I’m glad I did. The seller has been contracted to clear the lot over the next couple of weeks. Whatever doesn’t sell goes to scrap. According to him, he’s already taken two loads of push mowers with busted decks and seized engines as well as some trashed tillers. EVERYTHING here has been left outdoors for years. I’m not an expert, but this looks to be Suburban or 400? The tires are rotted out and all four rims are rusted through. The hood is in surprisingly good shape and it has the dual slots for throttle and choke as well as a tiny toggle switch. Gas tank is in place. I’m not sure this is an original seat, but it is in great condition. The engine won’t turn but it has a carb--some corrosion and rust but I’ve seen worse. The clutch mechanism is there as are both footrests. The frame seems complete, including front axle, tie rod, and steering but the steering wheel has some of its plastic missing. The gearshift is stuck and I didn’t want to force it. The rear wheels were too embedded in the ground to move to see if the rear axle would turn. There is a mower deck under there and the slot hitch has some sort of adaptor in it. Sorry, I forgot to get the transmission casting numbers. The other useful find was this frame. This time I DID get the casting numbers (below). This transaxle seems pretty good--shifter works and the diff works. I didn’t try to turn the input shaft because the brake seems rusted to the drum. Front axle is there with spindles, tie rod, and the steering socket but no other steering parts. Slot hitch is one of the welded style slots. Elsewhere were a C-111 and what looked like an S/G 8hp from 66-70--maybe an 856 or 857?. The C-111 is in poor condition overall but the B&S looked salvageable. The 8hp tractor is in slightly better shape, (3-speed, flip rear seat, hood latch near the steering wheel and chrome hood ornament). Both seem more or less complete and have flat tires with rot showing. I didn’t go over these closely. (Picture from the ad) The only other WH items were a 32” geared mower deck from a Lawn Ranger (or possibly for the frame-only Suburban, RJ, or 400?) and one 36” geared deck, probably from the 856/857. Neither was in good shape--maybe usable for parts. Also on the lot: a Bolens 850 tube frame, an Allis Chalmers B10 and its Simplicity twin, and part of an old Speedway (the hood, frame, and seat). As well, loads and loads of sad push mowers with B&S engines (most with the heads removed?) and boxes of plastic mower wheels. There was a 6’ ride-on disk harrow. Tires and rusty wheels. Sticking to my resolution, I didn’t bring my trailer and so I didn’t bring anything home! The seller made it very clear that he’d like to see things put to use so pretty much any offer reasonably more than scrap value he will take. He said he’d leave the WHs until last to give me time to share this and see If anyone wants to pursue this, I might be able to lend a hand. PM me, we’ll exchange numbers and speak.

Harbor Freight leds. Big improvement over the old lights. They are great & inexpensive. I just cut connector off lamps & used heat shrink crimp connectors to existing headlamp wiring. Rear lamp is just a trailer marker light. I ran an aux 4 circuit fuse box to power lights, 12v power outlet, & anything else if needed.

I got a good one. worked with this guy at a Chevy dealer. He was in the parts dept. and lets just say he was a tad shady. Uglier than me ( if that's possible) and he drove a Ford Fairmount that had more holes in it than a tent at Pocono. Well it finally gave up so he comes in with a big white 65 Caddy. I think he was using it for a mobile dumpster because it was full of junk. He even took the registration sticker off of the Ford and put it on the Caddy. A Ford Fleetwood! We found a giant stuffed rabbit in a used car and stuck it on the roof. He put that rabbit in the back seat and rode around for months with it there. My wife help out an old lady so for Christmas she received this fruitcake. Well we didn't want it and she was going to just throw it out. I said I had a place for it. I figured I could sneak that fruitcake onto the floor of the back seat and it would stay there for eternity until he needed a wheel chock or something. So I put it in the Caddy. About a week later I'm at the parts counter and he's talking about how good this fruitcake someone stuck in his car tasted!

You could also clear coat it and not have to worry about the weather. One thought I’ve had with the right pitted tractor is to do a “Bleeding Horse”. After cleaning parts to bare metal, wipe red paint into the pitted area’s. After thats dry lightly sand it so the paint just remain in the pits. Then clear coat it. You also could do the chassis in full red and “bleed” just the sheet metal. As mentioned, coating the inside of the tool box with bed liner also looks good.

There is constant hydraulic oil flow through the valve inlet and outlet ports then out to the filter and lastly into the rear axle housing. That will get all air out of the long lines and part of the valve. Running the cylinder in and out a few times fill force air up into the valve where it will then be quickly pushed trough to the filter and on to the axle housing. All air should be quickly purged out. Sound in the video is just the relief valve and is totally normal. Actually, if the relief valve made no sound I would be worried that it was not functioning properly.

Receiver hitch ready to install. I made this up a few years ago out of 2" angle and tubing with a 2" receiver tube welded on. Note how the 2" angle on the left side has around 1/4" taken off the top for oil filter clearance. Receiver hitch just sitting on rear axle and held level with a jack stand. This will make installation much easier. Receiver hitch installed.

Did you know the west end of Niagara falls is in Wisconsin. I grew up hunting on "The Ledge" and went to St. Mary Springs for one year. Got kicked out for truancy and when they figured out I was a recovering Catholic...not suited as a scholar but a motor head anyway ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niagara_Escarpment#External_links From that article. The Niagara Escarpment is a prominent Wisconsin feature in Dodge County, southwest of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; it is known there as "The Ledge" and is in Ledge County Park between Horicon and Mayville, Wisconsin.[7] Some local organizations take their name from it, including The Ledgers, the sports teams at St. Mary's Springs Academy, which is perched on the side of the escarpment.

Since my family and I are spaniel people, years ago we rescued Jake. He was five years old and came from the New England Springer Rescue, and we were his fourth home. When my wife brought him home from Massachusetts the first thing he did was walk in my bedroom, lift his leg and piss on my bed! Since we already had one springer a fight ensued and Jake quickly became the Alfa dog! After that fight they never fought again and became friends. Coming to us he was disheveled with matted hair and looked generally neglected. After a trip to the groomer and lots of love he quickly settled in and became part of the family. To this day I have no idea why we were his forth home? He never did anything wrong. The last two years of his life he developed diabetes and required two shots a day at $4.00 per shot. Eight dollars a day for two years adds up but he was well worth it. Long story short, our rescue dog provided my family with tons of love and although he has been gone for over ten years he is still sorely missed ❤️

In keeping with the "Old & New Technology" and "Screwdrivers " threads, and since nothing is broke and it's not snowing I'd thought I'd share what I've been doing during the 2 days a week I actually work. @WHX?? and @elcamino/wheelhorse think I just sit and eat doughnuts all day. . I have started refurbishing the mechanical mechanism's for the Pneumatic tube stations at the hospital I work at. We have 33 of these stations that all have been neglected (A.K.A. the guy who was supposed to be PMing these things was just signing them off and chasing women all night. ) They transport 6" X 1' plastic tubes that are very heavy for what they are. They move medicine, blood samples and paperwork ( No ladies in the ICU they are not meant for Cosmo, Avon magazines and Spiegel Catalogs) In the screwdriver thread I mentioned I needed a special driver so I can remove a motor with out gutting the unit. But to do what I'm doing the whole she-bang has to come out. Not really hard. There is wall trim to remove, unwire the front panel and remove six nuts and it pulls right out. Then a few more plugs and loosen the band clamp and the whole unit slides out. The original 1998 vintage stuff is all welded steel and quite heavy for what's there. The newer 2013 vintage motor plates are extruded aluminum with a little bit of steel. This is what the station looks like. This is a 2013 unit. Notice the buttons are worn. They don't support this panel any more. LCD upgrade is 8 grand! A look inside the unit. The lower motor is the one I need this special driver for. This motor plate is the extruded kind. I had to replace both gearmotors as they were worn so bad they were leaking grease. The black box is an infrared sensor that tells the system a carrier has passed thru. The lenses got cleaned. New seals and guides and this is ready to install. Here is a view of the screw I need the driver for. There is no way to get your hands in there when it's in the station and almost impossible when it's out. Here is the welded older style all apart. The white square is a new slide plate already installed. A view of the old slide plate and dispatcher seals. Going to install upgraded crank arms. The old Beige ones had a tiny T15 screw that wouldn't stay tight and it would loosen causing the station to go into alarm. New arm is beefier with a nice big socket screw. Chute infrared board. View of the 2 infrared lenses. I wanted to repaint everything but there is no place to pain with out paint fumes traveling into somewhere causing a complaint. Crank arm installed. The little finger passes thru another infrared beam to tell the computer what the position of the motor is. Slide plate gearmotor installed. They are 110V so we have a little test rig wired up so I can run the motor and check operation. Next time you go to the drive thru window at the bank, think of all of this.

Pushed bout 10" snow this evening with the 654. Said it before but again I'm surprised at how well it pushes for only being 6hp Tecumseh. Although I like my Kohlers I'm not a Tecumseh hater...... I may come up with a winch setup to raise/lower plow to make things easier on my back. VID-20250103-WA0017.mp4

Musta missed this thread in the day but I love the look of not filling them in on any type of restoration. Adds great character and reminds one of what it looked like before a full paint resto and that it suffered many days outside under no cover. A block of snow & ice. I've seen @Achto filiing them in and I cringe but he drills holes in 50 year old sheet metal too. Last 701 full paint resto I even went so far & left a few small pieces bare for effect. Note the ampmeter bezel, tunnel floor and shifter.

I decided to try a China made carb on my C105. It's worked fine & barely had to adjust it. Sold tractor w/confidence but I did give the Amish guy that bought it the original carb & told him it would need overhauled. Put another one on my 604 it worked great & guy I sold that tractor to stays in touch & uses it all the time. Lastly, I put one on the 654 & again it's been fine. Use the 654 for most all my mowing & snow plowing so it's my go to work tractor. Sad to say that the China carbs are cheaper than an overhaul kit. Also it's getting harder to see when rebuilding 🙄. Maybe I'll get to actually overhauling my original carbs???? Or is it just easier to buy another $18 carb? 🤷
  41. 3 points
There are no adjustment needles on this China carb but it seems to work well out of the box.

I suspect you will find some heavy pitting in the bead area and around the valve stem hole. I’ve used JB Weld and Bondo with equally good results. Sand it down with #80 grit paper, just leaving enough material to fill the pits. I just sand blasted some 1977 rims and filled the pitting on them. But didn’t take any pictures. Ps On the rear rims it’s cool to find the date stamp telling the month and year the rim was made.

A couple of weeks ago I mounted up my newly acquired NOS @stevebo 48” plow on my C-175 ( For display purposes only!) I was ready to put it away for the winter, but decided I should take a few pictures first. My next little project is to switch over the other plow from the 418-8 to the 418-C. I figured I’d give plowing a try with the extra speed of the C. I plowed a little bit last year with the 8-speed but found it and the electric lift a bit slow for my liking. Here’s a few pics for you folks!
