9 pointsGot it! Now, what to do, what to do. I really want this one to be a restomod. Classic car, modern drivetrain. A 1957 Pontiac Star Chief doesn’t seem to be as desirable as a 1957 Chevy. I could care less on the value or desires of others, it makes me happy. I have a 2001 Chevy 2500HD 2wd chassis. The wheelbase is a bit longer than the ‘57. Not wanting to affect the design or load capability of the truck frame, I’d need to stretch the wheel wells a bit. It would be my first auto body project of this kind, but I have practiced on Frank, my wife’s “1073” custom belt guard, hood, etc, making precision welds without warping the sheet metal. I also have the school bus. It’s a 2009 Blue Bird Vision with a 6.7L Cummins and an Allison 2000 transmission. This transmission has no park designation because the bus uses air brakes. You “park” it in neutral and dump the air to the brakes, locking all wheels. This might be a while. Part of the funds to buy this were from selling the backhoe. The deal on the backhoe was that I wouldn’t touch it until the bathroom was complete. I need to hang the door I built, and trim the bathroom. I should also finish the wet bar / coffee bar that was started too, while I’m inside. But, it’s home!

8 pointsIt was our 48th anniversary today so we went hog wild (pun intended...keep reading). There's a place about 10 miles from here on Bass Lake, one of Indianas larger natural lakes. We've been thinking about trying the Woodshed Tap and Grill since we moved here but we're not big on eating out and just never got around to it. Since she knows I could sustain myself on bacon alone Nancy mentioned this sandwich to me. It's called a Pigout BLT. 1/2 pound of applewood smoked bacon. The picture doesn't do it justice. To say it was excellent is an understatement. Nancy had fried cod and said it was delicious. I'm thinking this place will become a regular thing. They have a fried perch dinner that has my attention.

8 pointsBoy I have come a long way since that day. I have bought many since then to keep or sell. This is the best hobby a guy or Gal can have. It moves me by keeping me active and of corse having a WRENCH in my hand. Enjoy the ride ever one.

7 pointsA couple days late to the party…however we did take our annual Stertz Tractor Christmas pic. Zach was adamant that Blackbeard needed to be in it… considering we had just started the resto last Christmas Eve (2022), it was fitting! We have a bonus kid in this picture. Our nephew from Tennessee surprised us with a two day visit and we were happy to have him. Merry Christmas Red Square friends from the Stertz gang and a Happy New Year!🎊

6 pointsPull the head and check the exhaust valve for closing. It may just need a decarbon.

5 pointsHi everyone, I am new to this form and new to the wheel horse world, I was looking for a garden tractor on FB to help build my homestead and my eye was on cubs but red fever caught me and I end up picking up a wheel horse yesterday, it was rainy and the tractor was covered with weeds and grass and glued to the ground with mud but I was able to haul it on the trailer using rachets , it took me hours to do so I got soaked like a dog but the excitement and the adrenaline helped that's when I knew the wheel horse red fever caught me lol. The tractor I couldn't match it to any picture I found in this form or on Google , there is no identification plate on it anywhere, the hood says 312-8 but I don't trust it, the black rubber that holds it down are not there and decals looks odd with wrinkles made me assume they are custom made, but I am still looking for hints or something I can provide for you guys to help identify it. The engine is onan 20 hp this what the sticker says: "Craftsman 20hp by onan" but I couldn't find the serial number on the engine, I am guessing p220 but any help to identify it will be appreciated. The pto clutch is missing and replaced with standard pulley, the drive belt guard is not there at first I thought it was cut or modified to make the engine swap work but it's not looks it's 2 parts guard and the part closer to the engine was simply removed. I am attaching some pictures of it and I will upload more. Any help will be appreciated , the important part I want to identify is the transmission, I will be using it to pull logs, stumps, trailers, push dirt , all the hard work that comes with clearing a woodland to build a homestead from scratch. Thank you very much

5 pointsThat 312 probably has the heavier duty 8-speed transmission. Best bet is to measure the diameter of the axle shafts between the transmission case and wheel hubs. It'll either be 1 in or 1 1/8 in. I think you'll find that to be a great heavy stuff pulling machine. We have several machines that are older. Some 8 horse. Some 16. To get the best traction.... You need the most WEIGHT. Keep asking questions. We'll help you out.

5 pointsSounds to me like the exhaust valve is sticking open. If so, you would need to open up the case to resolve it.

4 pointsToday I am back in the game. Not a wannabe any more I found this today, was looking for something bigger but this showed up. I do not like driving at night any more so they where there in the day time so I rented a truck and headed down the highway. It works well the dirt was about 10 minutes and done. It needs some minor TLC but that is part of the game. Saving the walking trail we walk with the dogs every day. I hope you enjoy the picks. Happy to have a tractor again and back in the Chace.

4 pointsWhere exactly is this show in Florida Lane? I can't zoom in on the map to tell. I put a bug in an ear about a FL vacation. Shhh she doesn't know it's a tractor show.
-
4 pointsA lean fuel mixture can cause high exhaust temperatures, so clean out your carburetor and see if that solves the problem.
-
4 pointsto the Noel. That does appear to be a 312-8 with an Onan P220G transplanted engine. These Onans were used in the Craftsman GT series III tractors. 20 hp onan engine in III GT | Garden Tractor Forums (gardentractortalk.com) If you do decide to replace the existing drive pulley with a Wheel Horse PTO clutch assembly, make sure the Onan engine is equipped with the correct crankshaft bearing to handle the axial thrust from the PTO clutch.

3 pointsPresuming this build will be High Wide and Handsome so the tire won't be up inside the wheel well I would suggest a cut and paste job. Cut the body at the rear door opening and under the chrome strip, slide it back where it needs to go be, spot weld it in place and make a patch to cover the opening. It was easy to do on the computer, shouldn't take you very long once you finish up your other projectsd.

3 pointsI too have a 87 312-8 that was my father's. The Kohler M12 engine that was on it had over 1700 hours on it and now smokes. I am in the process of repowering it with a Honda twin.
-
3 pointsI walked into an Orielly's looking for a condenser for a Kohler and got a confused look. "OK" I said "How about a condenser for a 1964 Impala w/ an inline 6cyl engine". Had to make it so that they had something they could look up.

3 pointsWelcome to Red Square. The maroon background of the hood decal was used 1985-1989. The original tractor data decal would have been on the rear fender pan under the front of the seat or under the left side of the seat. Left and right always from the operator's position in the seat. Assuming the tractor is a 312-8 with a replacement engine - 6 pages of info for the 312-8 and they are in no particular order. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?q=312-8&quick=1&type=downloads_file Possible models 21-12K801 1985 21-12K802 1986 21-12K803 1986 21-12K804 1987 21-12K805 1988 21-12K806 1989

3 pointsThe Tpms sensors on our 2014 Toyota Sienna finally gave out. I purchased this item from Amazon and it worked perfectly and easily to change them out. It’s a larger model and heavy but worked great on the tractor tire to put a tube in. Placed an old piece of rubber tube under the clamp area and no scratches at all.

3 pointsBack in the summer of 1967 I must have doing a lot of fast talking. My Dad was a delivery driver for Armours Meats delivering to restaurants and resorts all over Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. He worked long hours and took all the overtime he could get. Consequently, all yard work and snow shoveling was my responsibility. Our driveway was about 150 feet long and we got a lot of blowing and drifting snow. Plus sidewalks. My uncle built National Mowers, so we had one of them. We(I) needed a snowblower. Usually in August I attended the Minnesota State Fair with my Mom and Aunt. This year I went with my Dad. We were on a mission to shop for a garden tractor with a snowblower. I don't know how serious he was, but I was already sold on a Cub Cadet with John Deere coming in second. Once Dad saw the price on these the whole idea was over. No way! As long as we were there, we looked at all the other brands on the grounds. Everything of the era was represented and we looked at all of them. Eventually we ran across a display of little red tractors. As luck would have it the area dealers rotated through the display and the dealer in St. Paul Park was on duty. He informed us that they had a State Fair special where you got a free mower with each tractor. Now my Dad was at least back to considering the possibility. We went home with a promise to visit Zilmers Fix-it Shop soon where could test drive and get a closer look. Soon after the Fair we went down to his dealership. My Dad told him we needed a snow blower and not a mower. Eventually a deal was struck and we returned home with a brand new 1077 and a single stage blower. Now I couldn't wait for it to snow. I recently found these pictures of me and the brand new 1077. Since I was bringing home a Christmas tree, I though this was a good time to share them. I was 15 when the picture was taken. I still have both the tractor and trailer. I made the trailer from a Model T frame and pallet wood. I have since upgaded it to a bigger deck and tires. The 1077 would still run with a new battery, but is in need of complete restoration. Both are stored inside. It's been fun to remember this time and the origin of this special tractor. Merry Christmas to all! Kent

3 pointsThe Kohler 230722 Condenser fits all battery ignition single cylinder and twin cylinder from the K-90 to the K-582. The 235786 condensers are for the magneto equipped Kohler engines only K-161 to K-301 The unit of measure for a condenser is the Farad. Many electronic components like radios and TVs use capacitors that are in the microfarad range (ten to the minus six power Farads) and our small engines use a condenser that is in the nanofarad range (ten to the minus ninth power Farads) which is based on the voltage range they work in. A magneto ignition system uses a 100 to 250 nF condenser and a battery ignition system uses a 200 to 500 nF condenser. A good multi-meter will have a capacitor testing function. Armed with this information you can walk into your auto parts store and get a very confused look on the face of the person on the other side of the counter. The capacitance is not listed on the package and probably not in any of the on-line data they have for the condensers they stock. You just have to go by the application chart and be sure that the condenser you are buying is for the type ignition system your engine has, not just the horsepower or engine size.

3 points1077 What can I say ... a go to around here! Put away for the winter but hoping to fit a front blade someday. I'll second that Mikey... The boys have seen these pics 1Mor but will share again. I could never erase this stuff altho the leaf catcher has gone to a better home @CasualObservers.

2 pointsDid you have to tell them if it was a two door or a four door? Standard shift or automatic or standard transmission? What color? got to fill in all the boxes! I have no idea what the "S" stands for. Kohler changed their numbering system at some point and didn't seem to care about making an interchange list, A few years back I picked up a bunch of NOS Kohler parts and was selling them on Ebay. Some had the old numbers and some had the new so I had to do a bit of investigation before I could list them for sale.

2 pointsAdd some Rislone treatment to you oil and add some Marvel mystery oil to your gas to help lubricate the valves. Pull the head and describing as others have said.
-
2 pointsNeat. Do you still have the "B" ??? I have the same issue with night driving. All the signs glare and the white letter on green signs might as well not be there.

2 pointsWow, hadn't seen this thread before - good stuff! If anyone here has gluten intolerance, or cooks for anyone who does, I have some things I can share. I made gluten-free cranberry scones for Christmas brunch, and they were delicious - you'd never know they were gluten-free if you weren't told. I make gluten-free muffins of some type just about every weekend. My wife, daughter, and son all have gluten issues, and I've gotten somewhat healthier and slimmer since I've cut down on the gluten over the last 11 years. I think all it does to me is makes me a bit gassy, so I still splurge sometimes. But no gluten in our house. I also use Monk Fruit/Erythritol sweeteners a lot, but not for the kids. Cooking gluten-free is a challenge.... gluten AND sugar-free is a BIG challenge.
