11 pointsDrizzle and drab. Got a big surprise. Met up with Ed Dog Kennel and I think Jay's (Road Apples' brother Guy. I bought one of Jay's snow plows and was gifted Jay's old horse head mask and "Winnie" horn. I was pretty choked up. Had some fun harassing everyone with it using it as a puppet. Installed the horn on the Squonk Mobile.

6 pointsPretty good turn out on this one so far! Show day today! I hope for a full tractor! I got it running yesterday after @BHunter’s buddy Stan suggested “a key” and I had the ignition switch flipped the wrong way! Man, I love REC fuel! It was 363 days since it had last run. Miss Janie even signed Roadapples ❤️ People were reluctant at first, but thanks @rjg854 and @squonk for kicking the signings off!

5 pointsAnyone buy any new projects at the show this year? This was my take home; a nice little lawn ranger. Always wanted one for some reason lol
-
5 pointsSo after years of listening to @ebinmaine and @Ed Kennell and others drone on and on and on... and on... about the virtues of added weight for plowing snow. And having tried to gain said weight through beer and cashew consumption, to the point of annoying Mrs. Sylvan ... I have surrendered to the weight lords ... 200 lbs. (Free trash day pick up.) Crate was from my late Dad's garage when we moved him out of the house... Other than paint, all parts came from stock piles, no $$$ spent on this little addition to the C105. I expect traction miracles this coming winter...

4 pointsThanks to all that purchased part of the @roadapples collection and to those who dug thru my buckets of junque. We had two great days and are looking for a great day tomorrow. Jay's brother Guy and I are set up in a back row barn and have plenty of Wheel Horse treasures remaining. Saturday is make and offer day.....we can't haul it all home. I blew out two tires hauling it here. Any help to lighten the load is appreciated.

4 pointsI would think the camper frame was baked into the design for rigidity / strength. Removing that would change the dynamics of the design of the bed. I would jack it up and spin tires to check bearings. Look closely at frame - cracks / past bends fixed etc.Appears the frame is lighter gauge than typical for a flatbed of that size...
-
4 pointsMy son-in-law bought the lower half of a 2 wheel popup camper, once the body was removed & scrapped. By design, the weight is somewhat evenly distributed from the factory. Once it is a flatbed, all bets are off. When they were moving to their present house from their first, he overloaded it with the 1500 lbs + of rock from their koi pond placed up front and furniture at the rear. He managed to distort and buckle the two C-shaped tongue rails where they join the front rail - leaving about 2 inches of ground clearance. He repositioned the rock and got home. The fix was to heat and bend the rails back, add a heavy cross brace in the middle of the triangle and add a "backbone" from a section of 3 inch iron pipe from the center of that brace, thru a hole in the front rail and into the second rail. My son welded it all up - no more bending issues. He also replaced the original springs and axle to a heavier unit that positioned the wheels outside the frame rails, not what is shown to give more load space. I have borrowed it on occasion, tows well. If it is priced dirt cheap, and the springs, axles, hubs are all good - it might be a good start. Does it have either elecrtic or surge brakes?? If it does and they do not work, it can get expensive to fix... One more - does it have a clean title and a previous registration??? The DMV will want one or both. Here, you have to jump thru hoops to register a built from scratch homemade trailer, as I posted before.... Bill

4 pointsI know it couldn’t be you Mike, that horse has some quick comebacks!

4 pointsI have a lot of parts that I don't want to take home. I'm in the 4-H beef barn. Many items for $1.00. All others make an offer. Excellent original 701 mower deck in great condition, hydro transmission fits 875, 876, 877, etc., Onan starters, K181 air filters $5.00, much more. And don't forget BRAKE LININGS.

3 points...too much time catching up with my W-H peeps, and not enough time taking picts. My apologies, I only have these few to share. 20230623_164155.mp4 20230623_163423.mp4 20230623_150655.mp4 20230623_130953.mp4 20230623_122622.mp4

3 points"Same size" rear tires according to the manufacturer... 23x9.5x12 Carlisle Turfmaster. Purchased couple years apart... I'll let you figure out the more recent purchase... go figure...

3 pointsI built a brace for Clyde's stack today. Modified a 1 1/2" EMT wall clamp and custom formed (beat to fit) a piece of 1 x something strip of steel left over from some other project. I'll get a little more seat time on this set up to make sure it is working for me, then do some more clean up and add paint. Oops. I need to pay my forum membership! When I turn red again, I'll post a picture.

3 pointsOur camper had electric and it was reassuring to feel them come on just a bit quicker than the auto brakes.
-
3 pointsI spotted a potential issue - maybe... Look at the shape of the front beam - is it just a cantilevered angle?? Are there stiffener gussets behind it.? That must flex a lot taking off or stopping..... makes a good arguement for a central "backbone"...
-
3 pointsIs there a readable info plate on the tongue for load rating and other data? I’d really want to look at the structural members under the wood for: a) adequacy to support loads across the flooring (not just at the edges), and b) anything that has compromised them (rust, bending, etc.) The heavy front beam signals it was designed for a pretty heavy tongue weight. I’d also want to track down the wiring that I see. The stake pockets have been added...adequately? @ri702bill’s comment about brakes is also on point (and in your wheelhouse, right?)
-
3 pointsI did just that on my 701 K161. Bored to standard size, and fitted with an ACR cam from a K181. Works great.

3 pointsNope. It will shear the spline ends from the axle. Seen it several times. I'd be curious about the condition of both the axle and differential bearings. Likely the result of a case full of water for a very long time. Axle bearings corrode first, then begin to fail. This allows for misalignment of the axles in the diff end cap. Crunch and grind...

2 pointsOl' Roy here has been on a back burner for years, took him for his first ride today. Need to to a bit of adjusting on the hydro linkages. But overall it's good.
-
2 pointsDid you get it home yet @ebinmaine ? Sounds like we should be asking you the towing questions Keep safe, brother.
-
2 pointsIt will be interesting to see how you like the electric brakes. I've used them before but never had a trailer with brakes. Last big thing I towed way my 67 Index milling machine, from Louisville to an hour North of Indy. It wanted to go straight all the time. Back then there was a spot on the route where I had to ghetto sweep across about 5 or 6 lanes of Interstate in Indy, from an on ramp, across traffic to the next exit. That was a bit spooky. Lucky we avoided the heavy daytime traffic. If I had to repeat that trip today, I think I'd go around Indy and take the very long time penalty Bad neck bones.

2 pointsMy B-80 driven by my son, towing my neighbors latest purchase at the show @Docwheelhorse
-
2 pointsAbsolutely all true. I tend to like a slightly heavier than average tongue weight. I'll be doing some research on what it takes to get the trailer brakes working for when the loads are up there.
