Problem with buying a parts tractor is you end up fixing it up as well (ask me why I know). That is how the herd grows.

Belt guard rattle on the 1977 B-80 … driving me NUTZ! Ended up being a missing bolt where I circled in blue. While I was there the shifter boot was swapped, shifter set screw “adjusted” and a general cleanup.

Good point CCW. Someone is constantly nagging me about my collection of parts tractors and it's not the dog! Not to mention I have a outbuilding dedicated to storing parts that would make a dandy she shed...

A non-running parts tractor that has been sitting outside and has a questionable past is a real crapshoot. Without firsthand knowledge of its condition and if it isn't close by so a road trip is called for I would value it at $ 50. If it close by I would go take a look for sure and aske the seller for a price before going any further. Bring along a good charged battery or jumper pack and see it the engine will turn over with compression. If it turns then check for spark and give it a shot of carburetor cleaner, Might fire, might not. Don't get it running before agreeing on a price or you have just become his free mechanic.

That blade does not look like it fits a long frame tractor. Looks like vertical crankshaft lawn tractor.

Like the title says, a new creature found my home. For those who don't know, my wife is "Ellie May Clampett" at heart. Stray animals always find us, and she always feeds them. And they always stay! The sadder, more pitiful, and ugly, the more she likes them. ...Makes me rethink why she picked me! Anyway, now for four days we have another squatter. I've never seen a pheasant take up with people like this, but here he is. My wife named him "Rango", so I know he's here for as long as he wants...

That parts machine looks better than most of mine that I use today! If the price is right, I would pick it up for sure. Parts for a 50 year old machine will be harder to find as time goes on. You may also find the parts tractor is nice enough to fix on the side and have a "spare" Charger...

Rainy and nasty here today. Just to say I did something, I wire brushed and painted my front wheel weights to go on the repowered 310-8.

It’s amazing what a shot of red out of a rattle can does for something rusty and grubby
  15. 3 points
Yup, my thoughts were always the higher the better as the worst thing possible would be to survive and become a maimed vegetable eating through a straw. I enjoyed climbing but then got too old too fast so it was only about 5-6 years doing it but it wasn't full time. Highest for me was 600' on an 800' tower. We did communication antennas all over the Northeast. Mostly microwave point to point dishes then some cell antennas. The views were amazing and once we had an eagle flying around below us for a while.

A stock 5060 or later is great for plowing. I wouldn't worry about parts too much ... they are out there. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/shop-now/ is a good source. Really the only improvements are full length keyways on the axles with 2nd set screw. A-Z has some self locking hubs that are choice. Another upgrade might be to insure you have steel side plates on the diff. Pullers usually lock up the differential but you wouldn't want that for plowing or general use. Pull the transmission apart and see what it needs.

Don't forget the ignition switch . You'll have to remove it to clean the lugs. If the problem still exists check the starter. With the switch off, connect a jumper cable to the big lug on the starter side of the solenoid then touch it to the plus post on the battery. The starter should instantly engage and spin the engine. Then move the jumper to the small terminal on the solenoid and make the same test. If the starter engages and spins the engine, the solenoid is good. If both starter and solenoid are good, order a new ignition switch.

What any of these tractors left the factory as after 50 years is always debatable. So you have a nameplate and transmission that indicate a C81. And a re-decayed hood and engine that would be a C81. My moneys on the C81 nameplate. Don’t sell the 8speed 4 pinion 1” axle transmission short. I have a c81 and a 312-8 with 1” axles. The 312 mainly gets mowing duty. But the C81 had had its share of dirt dozing, grading and boat trailer pulling work. Not many spare WH parts in my area so I rebuild what I have if needed.

Check the short ground cable between the engine and the tractor frame. The shaker plate fatigues the wires in it.

I once told my wife that I'd make my tractor collecting a trade off. She could get a new critter every time I got a tractor, and we'd split the barn right down the middle. By the time I blinked twice she had 8 goats, a donkey, 4 dogs and 3 cats. I got a corner in the barn, and feeding the critters cost way more than tractoring. I still don't know how it happened!

I like squirrels. I like rabbits and deer more though. I love all animals. There’s room for most all of ‘em on the smoker!

Gentleman, I’m looking for advice/past experiences here as I’ve come across a non-running, unsure of year, Charger 12 for sale. I have a ‘69 Charger 12. Judging by the photos, it is in rough shape and is parked outdoors on a farm. The tractor comes with a snow plow and it features the hydraulic lift which my Charger 12 does not have. I’m interested in buying it because I feel like having access to its parts could be of future value for my Charger 12, but would still like to hear from you all if buying a “spare” tractor for solely it’s parts is actually worth it in the long run. What would you do if the price was “right”? Pictures:

Hello everyone... I'm new to the square and this would be my first post!! I have two 1972 Raider 14's that have 6 speed 1 1/8 axle 10 pinion LS transmissions. One of them I purchased from the original owner and in pretty good shape for sitting a few years. The second is in rough shape and need lots of TLC in the transmission department. Looking for parts to rebuild and not seeing much out there for pinion replacements, gears, axles (new aftermarket). The plan is to beef it up for serious plowing. Must be venders out there that the pullers are using? Thought I would take a short cut and pick everyone's brain for info. Thanks

A year or so ago I purchased a GT 14. Some previous owner removed the model & s/n tag to paint it and failed to put it back on. It still has the original hood decals on it and it does not have the first year decals on it so it is a 1970 model or above, I think. It does have the high back seat with 2 cushions on it which I think were used on 1970 & up models. Anyway, I bought an owners manual and a parts manual on eBay. I just notices the owners manual has model 1-7441 on it with a picture of the low seat back version and the parts manual I have says it is for models 1-1-7452 & 1-7453 along with a pic of a tractor with the high back seat like mine. Does this mean there are at least 3 different versions of the GT 14 and that mine is the later p/n 1-7452 or 7453 and 1 more question, what is the difference in the 2 later models so that I may establish which model I have? Please excuse my ignorance concerning this issue.

You don’t like em?? Kind of a machinery gray, my 315-8 has the same color wheels. I didn’t paint the ones on the B-80, and they definitely need to be re-done, but I did paint the ones on the 315-8

So much of my junk would agree. Every tractor I have was "swamp fresh", and a shot of paint definitely brings them out!

@ri702bill raises a good point and you might be well aware of this but that Charger with the hydro shouldn't roll without the tow valve being opened so keep that in mind if you think you might be pushing it onto a trailer or otherwise trying to move it.

In my experience, the Wheel Horse transmission STOCK is pretty dang stout for pulling, working, etc as long as it’s tight and has oil in it. After so many years of abuse, those two factors are the most important. The only other thing that wears them out, is speed shifting and grinding gears.

6 speed, 10 pinion transmissions were used from 1967 to 72 or 73. Parts are available as good used but I haven't seen a new replacement for pinions or axles. Hubs can be sourced from Lincoln at A to Z Tractor in PA. What's the exact issue with your own transmission? To set up for plowing you'll obviously need great traction. Fluid filled tires, plenty of steel weight. You'll be fine. BTW we really like pics of old tractors around here.....

I’m gonna guess they went with an FEL at some point. They would be to hold the towers, lift arms & bucket when that assembly was being removed from the tractor.

I like parts tractors and can't remember one I've lost my investment on. I'd be curious as to why it was parked but the dozer blade and hydro lift could be worth the $200 and there's likely enough other salvageable parts to make it worth your while. Looks like an original Nelson muffler, a decent belt guard, and you'll have some engine parts as well. Coil, starter, voltage regulator, throttle and choke cables, etc...

Trying to get the Raider dependable, didn't get a chance to check it out good when I got it. The wiring was all rapped together and taped, the two best connections were put together with wire nuts. I just tore it a part trashed almost of the electrical and all the existing wiring. Kept the lighter and PTO switch should have trashed them too. Something was draining the battery and it was dead when I got home with it. I charged up the original battery it was only a year old. it's drained two batteries in a week. Disconnected the lighter and PTO switch and bypassed them. I'll see it the battery stays up now. The fuel pump is also giving up so I'll need one of them. I'll keep the lighter in place but it will not get hooked up. It is charging t 14.3 volts at the battery when running. i

I had a similar problem with the C81 - turned out to be the starter itself - had a cracked magnet - may (must?) have been dropped by the previous owner... Starter innards were good - switched housings, good to go...
