This one hasn’t seen much use lately so once I thawed out the throttle cable, checked fluids and aired up one front tire it was off to the woods to be broken in! No roughhousing, just a nice slow ride on the trails. Stream is frozen up good so I rolled right over without an issue . Ran well. Only thing I don’t like and will probably eliminate is the clutch damper shock thingy. Super annoying and it operated real slow today, temps are in the single digits here.

ok so i looked at pictures on tractor sites to find a old picture. i bought the 4 wheel wagon in 2012 from the information from the forum posts i made on it. here is a picture of the 502 pulling it on the day i bought it from the junkyard. then pictures of my 701 pulling it today since the 502 is in corner of shed needing a fuel pump and i dont feel like freezing my butt off more than i need to lol. on the picture of the 502 my dad who past in july of 2017 from lung cancer is on it. he loved that little tractor (more so after i got a kohler on it instead of the briggs he installed)

Picked this us yesterday off a member here on the square. Newest WH that has even been in my garage! Not sure what year yet, still need to run the numbers. Included a sweet 48” deck that I will most likely sell as it won’t fit thru my shed door , and a 48” plow that is not as nice but usable. Pics of course….

While picking up a Wheel Horse last week, the seller asked if I wanted a set of tire chains. They looked very rusty, like that had sat in water for a long period. My son has a 418-A that he restored this summer and a new snowblower and I knew he was looking for a set, so I says “yes”. After doing some online research, I found someone who put their chains in vinegar for a week and it looked like it turned out pretty decent. So, I let these chains sit in the vinegar for about 5 days, as we have a snowstorm coming tomorrow and wanted to get them ready to put on my son’s tractor. It was interesting watching all of the bumbling as the vinegar reacted with the rust. After a few days the vinegar formed a very thick top crust. After power washing the vinegar & rust residue off, they turned out really good. I think if we could have waited a few more days it would have been perfect. Might do the is with all my chains at the end of the season and oil them up with some fluid film before storage.

We got the engine stripped down as far as I'm going to take it except maybe to pop the fuel pump off. Meeha Mirror helped out where she could. The Paint Department spent a few hours hand sanding and wire brushing followed by a wash with the acetone. Then when the wind finally calmed down after dark she sprayed some paint. Found the casting stamp on the block. If anyone knows how to decode this I'd be curious to know what year it is. 1973(?) 1983(?). @gwest_ca? Here's the engine in it's current state:

C'mon, bring it. Video sound does them no justice. That 520 is a beastly machine. 20220116_125926.mp4 Idle the two of them up and you can't even tell the Honda is running over the roar of that Onan.

Shimmed the blower up, got the chains on and lubed the C-160. Thanks to @Handy Don, my belt is on correctly too! Having given up on that wrongo plow index control arm on the B-80, I put the short plow on the no-name. Could not mount the chains though, as one of them seems to have walked off somewhere. ☹️

I've got a 24x40 garage with just a path through it. So like you I built a 12x24 lean-to on the end. Three horses and another path....

Don't forget to tell BBT that she's making some good progress.

I had a series 1 KT-17 with the same symptoms. I think the cam lobe on mine was worn because the pump worked fine. I went electric and no more starving for fuel.

The added traction on the rear now demands an air dam on the front.

I declared I didn't like my original custom tail lights so I tossed around some ideas and came up with mini foil. I think it looks better and it will help traction at the higher speeds these Wheel Horses are capable of.

I tried my best to fix the cart and well ended up asking for help. Buddy of mine said find a kitchen sink. So I went to the junkyard got 2 stainless steel sinks for 15 bucks lol. I cut one apart so we can dismantle it. And he got the axle out for me

I was wondering if anyone here had one? I’d guess Eric maybe? I ordered one off Amazon and can’t wait to try it. Kindling is getting hard to find on my property and I’d probably end up losing a finger by the hatchet method.

I just bought this Wheelhorse tub cart for $35 today and I am planning on restoring it in the spring. Does anyone know where I can get the original decals for it?

It’s gonna smoke a bit if you put MMO in the gas… especially on first start if it sat… Does it clear up and run normal when warmed up without a lot of smoke?
  21. 4 points
I bought a parts tractor with a Kohler twin that smoked a lot. Checked the oil and found it was overfilled, drained the oil and put in 1 1/2 Quarts and the smoke went away.

Never used one myself. I did recently watch a video of some one who made their own.

We've mulled over a few different ways of making kindling. We've used the axe. Hatchet. Tried a drill mounted twist splitter... (useless!!). If we had small pieces of light wood leftover from projects that got burned. Lately the BBT what in charge o' 🔥 fires 🔥 has been using a bit of bark. When we split the wood it gets put down to a much smaller size than most folks would do it. Roughly half so it's twice the work. But... We really don't need much for kindling. She saves all the little shards of bark or junk pieces that fall off the splitter. Peels dead birches. Whatever works.

I've had mine for five years now and has been a great performer. Compared to my C165, it is much quieter, uses less fuel, and very smooth running. I was a little skeptical of low-end power when I first got it, but it performed quite well in mowing through some thick overgrowth by the tree line out back. Well.... Ford had Philco electronics and refrigerators and GM had Frigidaire at one time so it isn't that unheard of for companies to branch out.

Cool find! Funny question about badging… and a little off topic… but Kohler is a very integral part of so many Wheel Horses. How do they have an engines division and a plumbing/fixtures division? Like imagine Wheel Horse also selling refrigerators or toilets…?

As my shop filled up I immediately saw where I would have to build a tractor shed for my tractors… So I built a “Horse” barn off the back of the shop, and it had to have 4 walls, doors, power for lights, and receptacles for battery tenders. Buy a $700 tractor, and build a $2000 building to store it in…

Fuel pumps are gre4at pushers but lousy suckers! With the fuel pump being mounted on the top of your engine and the tank being low it will need some help filling the fuel line. Like @Jeff-C175 said, a bit of pressure applied to the tank should do the trick. I prefer to use an air compressor nozzle so I don't take the chance of inhaling fumes. On my 418-C I went to an electric pump mounted low on the frame and have had no problems.

Actually, next time, just tie them with a rope to the bumper of your vehicle and drive down a gravel road. Makes them like brand new in minutes.

Just remember to keep the tractor clean. Dirt and dust adds about 15% parasitic drag...

1993 314-8 with 356hrs+ (as hour meter is broken) This fall I added some Seafoam and Marvel Mystery oil to the gas tank per instructions. I have not used the tractor until 3 weeks ago and noticed on start up there was more smoke at start up then usual. I am hoping its just the carbon burning off as I have NOT removed the head to decarboned the head or piston. It runs great but what would be my next step?

In all seriousness, we also got sleet and rain. Upwards of 3 inches so far. Even after brine spraying and plowing, the roads are a skating rink. 50 miles south they got freezing rain. I'd take 10 feet of snow over 1/4 inch of ice any day. Snow is nothing. Trees and power lines don't fall with 20 feet of snow. Grandpaws 2WD pickup can drive in snow. Ice is from the devil...

Yes on the math.I think I could have dine much more with math if we would have had the advantages of using calculators. The closest we got to that was the slide rule. Can you imagine a kid today doing long division method of solving of an answer that required a square root? I knew the steps to get there but my mistakes were little math mistakes using pencil and paper. It still was valuable in the understanding phase of my carpentry profession as I could calculate any rafter or stair of any pitch or an oddball span and basically cut out the entire building frame on a set of saw horses. We have progressed from using cross hair transits to being ale to pick out the corner points of a building on hills and slopes with automatic lasers But my own kid was amazed at how quickly I could figure out how much paint a room would take, and she had two more years of math in high school and stats and probs (and really good at it] in college. Just the other day a computer engineer wanted to lay out the interior of a high end ham radio circuit board to line up with some pre drilled holes in the edge of the box. I looked at him and said, " Template" He looked back at me and gave me that look of "Holy crap how do you know this solution so fast and why didn't i think of that?" Not saying I have high knowledge skills, but do have some common sense that comes from farmer engineering application ideas.

They predicted ice, but we got around 2" of sleet, I'll take it Power is still on here, not so lucky in SC and Florida has had tornadoes watch still in effect. Windy here, I'am 40 miles North of Horse Newbie.

When you click on the link, you will see a RA polisher being used. I use the pads from Harbor Freight, but I am rather disappointed with their polisher. The great thing about this polish is that it is slow cutting so even an amateur will not damage the paint.

That would be a viable option. Another would be a marine priming bulb. The tractors with under seat tanks are known for wanting to be manually primed on occasion. The fuel pump used by Kohler is not the best at pulling the fuel all the way down the length of the tractor. I have 2 C160s with upper shelf tanks and even they struggle some on an empty system. This scenario is one of the reasons I changed over to using clear blue fuel line. Can't see through rubber to diagnose issues. Try using a vacuum pump or equivalent to manually move fuel from point to point to verify no blockages. Be sure to check that the mid line filter is installed correctly and flows ok.
