300-500 would be my idea of a fair deal on something like that too, in complete working order, depending on overall condition etc. I know it's tempting to try and make a steal on it, but then again. Treat others, like you would like them to treat you. Personally, I never make a deal where I really rather would not have to face the other person ever again.

Please bear with me. I see trouble coming on the horizon and possibly will have to leave my church [but not my faith]. If you do not want a long read, just pass this by. Since You guys are my friends, it is really all I got because we are walking in a place of little trust in our church leaders. It all started when some on the council and the minister started making noises that membership was going down as our church was aging out. We were already sharing a minister with two other congregations, and it was OK. Also OK was the excellent stewardship we had with keeping the building in repair and no debt. The minister we shared is not of our faith, due to an ecumenical agreement, but more important, their church business relies on a council and the minister while ours is more democratic. When I was a trustee, we could only spend $500 per project without a special meeting of everyone to approve what we were doing. Now it is a little more, but still needing special meetings and votes for larger projects. We also have an elevator that works well at 30 years of age. Our building is beautiful with traditional stained glass and all that. I do see a future where the old guys will pass away and then the ones that follow will not have the savings or fat retirements that previous generations had to keep things going. Of course when our kids go to college, they move away to better opportunities and no longer are here to support the church The solution proposed was to keep one church building and sell the rest. Our building is not modern, but is perhaps the most solid and needing the fewest repairs., We kind of pointed that out at the meeting, but were informed that our elevator was out of date for a full blown computerized wheelchair that maybe one in a thousand wheelchair users would have. I can see why some of our people feel that all the rest of them want is our buildings to sell off and our bank account. Then there is the estate that came in from one of the other churches. instead of saving that money for part of the repairs for a new elevator in the chosen building, the council voted without our input to use that money to hire another youth minister for his first year. of course, the other churches would have to fund it thereafter. With all those issues, I am not seeing a way to survive without growing membership and money. Of course I also see this powerhouse minister putting a resume together of how he joined us together and then using that for a resume' enhancer to a bigger congregation...I have heard his sermons about needing strong faith to take chances for God. The thing is, we have been good stewards in the past [ I remodeled two bathrooms for cost of materials only] and the built up capital for this risk he wants to take comes from being frugal in the past. Someone brought up the fact that maybe that money for the proposed new minister could be better spent putting an elevator in the building we are moving to, but the minister said that they could just use a lift chair for now. First he puts down our out of date elevator, and then expects the wheel chair bound to transfer out of their chairs and into a stairway lift? This is painful to watch. I feel that something needs to be said at our meeting Sunday, but I am not a good speaker. My wife and I have been visiting area churches as we feel we may have no choice but to leave. It is hard to renew your soul when you see this chaos every time you go to your own church. That is only half of the story. The larger national churches involved have some issues coming at them as well...... Thanks for listening.

First off a hydro is a better choice for snow blowing especially with a single stage blower. You can vary your speed to keep the blower full. Single stages do not throw well if they are not getting enough snow. OK if you only have an 8 speed you can make it limited slip. You will need a 10 pinion differential and if your tranny has a one piece mushroom gear you will need to get a two piece one also. As pointed out above WEIGHT and chains will be a huge help. Front wheel weights and chains will make controlling things when the blower is on the ground better. Lots of weight on the stern also. When you raise the blower (like to back up ) you unload the rear end. Turfs and chains are good Narrow tires and chains are better....

I run AG tires year-round because we have a gravel driveway and rough Forest of course. the ones that are on my c-160 are fluid-filled and I also have four link chains on them for winter plowing usage only. People have variable experiences based on many different factors. IMHO if you want the smoothest ride with the best traction, use regular turf tires with 2 link chains and get as much weight as you can possibly get on them and fluid-filled inside. I'm not trying to counterbalance the heavy weight of a snow blower. You could put a little more weight even, on the back of the tractor using a trailer hitch.

Thanks guys for all of the well wishes. It was a decent day. Working out of town in southern MD, had the day off, just worked out that way yea !! Got a king cut prime rib. Relaxed and took it easy.

Loosen the jam nut (blue pointer ) 1-1/8" then you will see the end of the threaded shaft (yellow pint) has four flat surfaces. use a 5/8" wrench to tighten it. When you have desired resistance on the motion control lever tighten the jam nut.

I'm going to answer your question by not actually answering your question. You probably don't need limited-slip. You probably need MORE WEIGHT AND TRACTION. Yes I do realize that is not what you asked for. My Cinnamon Horse. C-160. Open differential. 8 speed. Total weight of about 1350 lb. I live on the side of a mountain. I do not get stuck. Okay now that said. Yes you can swap a 6-speed into your tractor and have limited slip. Your brake linkage geometry may change a little and may be challenging to line up. Maybe not.

Since purchasing some property/weekend getaway 4 months ago, I hear this a lot. "Hon, I got a ton of work done around the property this weekend, the Wheel Horse got lots of use! I also did some more work in the garage." "Theres plenty of work needed inside the house, but you played on the tractor and played in the garage all weekend." Anytime one can be accomplishing necessary work, yet people see it as 'playing', life is pretty good! However, the old saying- "Do what you love for a living and you never work a day in your life."? Im living proof that this can bit you right in the arse. I ate, slept and breathed hotrods all my life, so opened a hotrod shop. The new saying is "Do what you love for a living and you wont love it for long." No I do not mind most says at work, but it destroyed the hobby...... ok, back on the subject now....

A little more progress tonight. I made up a stubby steering column and mount. I still want to put a gusset on each side to be sure it will be good and solid. I also welded angle down the inside of each tub and connected with a piece of flat stock. I then mounted u bolts over the axles up through the angle I just welded in. I’ll eventually put a pvc pipe piece between the axle housing and the body to make sure it stays solid. And no, don’t adjust your TV set - there’s a gap between the angle and tubs because the floor of the tub still tilts inward a little at this spot making it impossible to fit the angle iron flush. A little seam sealer and you’ll never know it was there.

Some pics of the 86 during a refurb. I painted the frame with POR-15, installed stainless steel fuel and brake lines from Classic tube in New York, 2 OEM GM Fuel tanks, senders and the list doesn't stop. Drove the truck around Maine without the bed for several years before paint and completion just needed the rear mud flaps to make it legal and temporary lights from the take offs from the 88 R-30 after the utility body was installed.

I live in Maine, there is snow for approx 6 months out the year (depressing!!) and my 414-8 has become my snowblower! Nothing aggravates me more than getting stuck and 1 tire spinning, when you know two tires spinning would get you out! Any way of getting posi? The 60’s and early 70’s WH has posi...just take a posi carrier (from the 60’s) and shove it in the 414? I’m open to any ideas...

I always had a crappy bench so I built this a few years ago. 8'-6" long 3ft deep top is 1/4 plate an 8ft truck tool box under it. The vise is mounted on a plate that slides into a 2" trailer hitch and behind on the wall is a piece of 16ga so sparks would catch the wall on fire. The metal top is great for tacking stuff to when welding.

As Christians we may have many denominations, but we all believe in the same Maker. Sending prayers that the good Lord, our Shepherd will guide his flock through these troubled times. May he send the strength and divine guidance each of you need to steer your membership so you may always praise him in his house. On the subject of elevators, Before I recently retired, I was responsible for four 1940-50 elevators in dams that we eventually upgraded "to what was possible within the confines of their concrete shafts". I am not an elevator expert, and each State is probable a little different. However I can say this. 1. You existing elevator (and building) is grandfathered to the Life Safety and Handicap codes in place the day it was installed. When/If you upgrade it, (in its existing location) there's some variances the state approving agency can allow for you to only make those improvements "feasible within the confines of the existing building and its elevator shaft". (What this means is they can't make you build a completely new external elevator just because you need to upgrade the existing one.) 2. If you modify a building by adding a Completely NEW "personal lifting device" where one did not exist, you have to meet the new code, and....theirs a strong chance (depending on your state) that you may have to bring everything else in that building (steps, bathrooms, electrical etc) up to the new Life Safety and Handicap codes. Your church really needs to consult an expert in your state before they just throw a chair Lift in that other building.

I live in Texas and have no snow knowledge. However, I have pushed a lot of dirt with my C160 snow/dozer blade. First, no chains & no weight, then added chains, what an improvement. Then fluid filled tires and 66 lb weights on each rear tire, its now a pushing beast. But with that said, it would seem with the weight of the snowblower hanging up front it's offsetting some of the weight you have on the rear, so you really need the extra weight on the rear that @ebinmaine is talking about.

Be fair to your neighbor. Think in the long run. If you spend 400 on it and use for ten years it is a forty dollar a year purchase. Is that going to break the bank? As long as she does not ask $5999.99.

Well, greetings from Germany to this fantastic community. Been reading along here for a while now. This site is such a great resource. I'm not new to Wheel Horses - in fact, I now own my grandpa's '76 C-120 8-speed (first hand), that I used to love playing with as a child (some 40ish years ago). Fun fact: at age 7, I onced parked the C-120 right inbetween the tracks of a railroad here in Germany, as I thought the C-120 would perfectly fit width-wise. However, stalled the engine, train approached, train stopped, conductor helped me push the tractor off the tracks and I brought it back home safe. All these years later, the tractor still runs smooth and never had any major issues, just occassional hickups. The C-120 was actually assembled at the former plant in Belgium... hope this doesn't make it a 'faux-horse'. Btw. got a B-111 sitting here as well, but it doesn't even compare to the C-120.

Can 8 + 3 = 6??? short answer is NO!! 1. All 6 speeds are born as 10 pinion Limited Slip differentials. The axles are different lengths and 1 1/8" diameter. 2. All 3 speeds are 1" axles...except the Heavy Duty Bevel Gear Differentials...no help at all if you want any pinions, much less 10 pinions. 3. You can take an 8 speed and make it a 6 speed. You can take a 6 speed and make it an 8 speed. You need to have the service bulletin to see what it takes. The 2 piece mushroom gear is part of it. 4. If you take the IPL's for say the 702 and the IPL's for say a C-120 and compare the part numbers, you will see that really not to many parts are the same number and are not inter-changeable. 5. The case halves are not even close for what I think you are trying to do. Sure the gasket is a #3912 and the same in all the manual transmissions, but the inside of the right side case is poured different for the hi/low mechanism. The hi/low mechanism changes the gear ratios of the cluster gear. Just like a 15 speed road ranger in a cab over truck...you have 5 gears forward and 3 ranges so you keep shifting the same pattern 3 times. 6. SO...... 8 + 3 = 11 it always will. 7. Stop drinking Black Label...nothing good ever came of it.

Hey all! At the first local auto swap meet of the year close to me in Decatur, Tx, there is typically a little more than just automotive stuff, which I love! I pulled into my vendor spot this morning to see this DB parked in the spot next to mine. I've never seen one in person, and knew I had to have it. I tried not to buy it, and walked around and shopped for a few hours, but I came back to my truck and it was still there.. so it came home with me! Are there any DB guys on here? I know absolutely nothing about them. It has a non-original briggs on it that runs, but came with what is supposed to be the original Briggs. Not stuck or broken, just missing the sheet metal and a few other parts. It doesn't have a belt on it, so I need to figure out exactly what it is and find one. I believe it is a Suburban, but not sure what year. It's obviously been repainted, and they also painted over the data tag, so I hope I can remove it and still read what it says. The guy notched the grille to fit the air cleaner which sucks, but oh well. It looks cool and is well built. I'm assuming it is a single speed tractor? Do they even have reverse? I have no attachments and was hoping it had reverse. If it does, it should be a good tractor to move trailers around with! Also saw a couple of WH's for sale. One that was a C series parts tractor, and the other appears to be a 500 special per the white stripe on the hood. The hood was rusted through on top, and had what I assume is a CC K301 on it. Had the shallow pan on it and had spacers under it to mount it. The parts tractor was really a better tractor other than it was a geared tractor. Wanted $325 for the pair. I think I'll pass. I'll offer $50 for the pair late tomorrow. We'll see what happens!

that's the color scheme, they made them for 3 years. we will get you all set up to get that machine going again. mine was in worse shape than that one. it's going to take some diagrams and explaining to fully understand the drive mechanism. I am sure your clutch is froze, get some pb blaster ready. welcome to owning a tractor with no neutral. they don't roll, the one front wheel has a reverse thread bolt fyi. too bad the original rims are missing.

To bad it's not a Wheel Horse. A "Mobil Bus Stop" like that would get a lot of mileage at the Big Show

Thanks. I'll have to dig into it and see how much of it may be wheel horse or other. I picked it up dirt cheap so it's no big deal. Only makes finding parts more interesting.

I know how you feel. That is exactly what happened when Lane gave me those 4 or 5 transmissions to try to make one. A lot of members, like Racin'Bob, got involved in a thread that went to 10 pages to see what was possible to save these 3 piece transmissions...and I had a two piece #5025 open at the same time. Talk about brain storming!! I will tell you this, open that 3 speed and the 8 speed at the same time...do a thread with videos. It does make a difference having everything laying out in front of you. I have been very fortunate in that regard.

Soldering is a possibility but it must be done with a fair amount of guesswork and care because the steel of the shaft will heat differently from the solder itself. I'm not sure about the vibration resistance characteristics of JB weld versus the solder. Jim and I did solder the carb shaft in the same place on one of the ones we did but I have not installed it on the tractor yet. Several of the members of this site have had good luck with the Chinese replacement carbs but I am NOT one of them and I do NOT RECOMMEND using them. Norman is a great guy. I've spoken to him on the phone and by text a few times. I love the fact that he is local to me. That said, I have never bought anything from his company because quite frankly I am too frugal. Cheap. It is your tractor and you obviously are welcome to fix it in whatever way makes you feel the best. I would very HIGHLY recommend that you fix the original Kohler carburetor. It's not at all a difficult thing to do given a certain skill level. I had no idea how to repair or rebuild a Kohler carburetor 3 years ago but I have done several successfully since.

I had a ‘99 Dodge 1500 Sport just out of high school. It’s one that as much as I’m a Chevy guy, have regretted getting rid of too. It was a regular cab short box 4x4 with the 318 and dual 2-1/4 “ exhaust and no mufflers. Oh did it sound great with that Dodge cackle! Last summer at the races, Rylee heard the rumble of a 318 leaving the races one night. I think that made her wonder if she could ever have a set of horns on her grill instead of a bowtie...

Here is what I found... https://itstillruns.com/differences-between-positraction-limited-slip-7669936.html I think Eric has the right idea, but he is using the wrong material...ie...Wheel Horse transmissions and parts. I think the right way to tackle this issue is to find a Pontiac or Ford Ranger posi-traction rear end. Cut out a section of the axles and axle housing so you have a finish of about 3' and weld the pieces back together. Poof, there it is...it's that easy. Not really! Cars have a transmission and a differential that are separate. Wheel Horse is in the same case. Wheel Horse works with either vertical or horizontal shaft engines...belts and pulleys...not drive shafts. What would Ian do??? He would build a dune buggy using big twin motor cycle engines, drive shafts, and Pontiac rear ends...and mount a Wheel Horse snow blade on it. To answer your question, Wheel Horse made 3 Limited Slip transmissions...#5060, #5071 & #5073. They should all bolt right in. The issue is your linkage. Your 414-8 has the brake drum on the cluster gear shaft, and so does the #5073. The #5060 & the #5071 has the brake drum on the Mushroom gear. If you can find the whole trans, go for the #5073. I'm not familiar with the 414-8, some of these horses come with an 8 speed transmission, but some have 1" axles. If you have 1" axles, you need a case with 1 1/8" axles. If you have 1 1/8" axles, you will need a 10 pinion LS differential from any of the 3 LS trannys...and you also need a 2 piece mushroom gear.

Need to be careful in describing the inner bearings. WH used two types. most common is a Ball bearing (#1533) but in some years (I guess when they didn't have any 1533s) the used a straight Needle / Roller bearing. #8048

lookin good Dell. If it is difficult getting in the tub, you can always move the entire steering assembly forward on the frame by shortening the horizontal shaft.

Did some work on mule drive, adj knob broke off , had a double nut on threaded rod, will make a new one. Looks like this thing took a good hit, bent front plate, cross rod bent, its been a little cold for sandblasting so it will have to wait. Putting bushings on neutral control pedal and linkage rods ends needed to be a little longer, so welded ends up, got them ground down to about .010 . Was going to braze the ends and file to size, but can't find welding tip. Went to harbor freight got #2 and a #4 tip. 11/2 he round trip, here we go, put on new tip , turn on acetylene fire it up, turn on oxygen nothing, tomorrow 2hr round trip to fill tank.

I love how you numbered out the list of directions there. I do very much appreciate the information. Thank you for that. I feel like I should modify number 7. I don't drink Black label. In fact I rarely drink any beer at all. Just not really a huge fan of it. I do like a nice citrus type beer. Now..... Kapali and milk. That's the stuff. Oh man. Notwithstanding both of those I do on a Very regular basis boil my own coffee. Camp coffee. Cowboy coffee. Whatever you want to call it. That by itself should prove that I am not quite right.... So, no worries on the transmission. We'll just go back to the drawing board and figure out something else.
